I like GEM. I _need_ MultiGEM. GEM does almost anything the MacOS will do
for you. MultiGEM will do almost anything a Mac with MultiFinder does for
you. So how can you tell us nobody wants a multitasking TOS?

It's not brain dead. It works. It's quite fast, if you compare it with Windows.
It's easy to program. And I like it. Please don't think ATARI must be
a bunch of fools just because they don't follow your way of thinking.

I disagree totally. Why should someone buy an Atari when he really wants
to run MAC software. Atari will only survive, if their own operating system
can compete. With things like FSMGDOS and a multitasking TOS in development..
Don't forget: TOS is 32 bit clean NOW, and you can easily run TOS software
on a 16MB machine.This is really nice for image processing and DTP.

I like Turbo C, too. But it's just an absolutely normal GEM application,
just a SciGraph, Gemini, Rufus, Interface, Script and many other fine
GEM based programs.

What's the problem with Multi-GEM?

>GEM is brain dead, it never will amount to anything. I wish I could reclaim
>my ROM space IMMEDIATELY.

If you say things like that, you have to give reasons. Comparing GEM with
Windows or Motif, there are a lot of good things both VDI and AES, and
it will someday more than one GEM program at once, I see no problems at
all.

Note: as far as I know, with Motif you simpla don't have a _virtual_
device concept: you simply can NOT redirect screen output to metafiles
or printers.

All I hear is: `I want'. Sure: a TT/040 with multitasking TOS, able to
run all MAC programs (what about SunOS and NextStep) would be a fine
thing...

It already is. Also note that the original posting about "Getting GCC 1.39
up and running"
(which I posted about a month ago) also has GCCEXEC plainly
definied with a trailing '-' ... primarily because this is the way that the
GNU.G file for the Gulam shell was set up.

It can be done, but not with the MIDI port: the sound of the soundchip is
available at a pin at the monitor port (the manual says whichone it is, I cant
remember it now), so all you have to do is just plug in an interfacebox
(selfmade) or put a cynch-plug into you atari (I have done so) connecting it
with the outputpin at the monitor plug, its really easy to do and it sounds
great!!

I think I got an error during the unlzh as well, but I tried to unMSA it
to disk and it worked, but locked up prematurely. The result is that
the big demo works fine, but there's a newer(?) version of Esion also
on the disk, and I get two bombs when I run it.

I downloaded it twice and got the same result each time.

Pardon my ignorance, but I don't know anything about AutoDesk software.
Assuming AutoDesk is a company, what do they produce? (If it's a
product, what is it?)

I asked a question recently about Tom Hudson's whereabouts, but got no
reply. I know Mike Vederman's usually very good about passing on
information, so I'm wondering if my messages are getting out to the
world. If you have time, and live in (let's try to restrict this) the

Hi, I have just bought a second hand (maybe second user to U.S. folk)
Spectre GCR, it came with version 2.0 software, I realise we are now on 3.0
so I have a few questions.

1) What are the advantages of 3.0 over 2.0

2) Where do I get 3.0, does Dave allow users to pass them amongst themselves
or is that not on. If it is on can some UK user with 3.0 (or even 2.65) get
in touch with me and I will reimburse all costs. If the upgrade has to be
done via Dave, where do I contact him, is he still at 40 W. Littleton Blvd
etc.

Well, after reading all of that, I have decided to give up on converting mac
fonts. I don't have and there is no way I can afford Spectre, so that blows
the whole thing out of reach.

I did find source for the unbinhex and unstuffit programs at
sumex.stanford.edu (thanks to the person who suggested it) along with some
other mac conversion programs.

The good thing to come out of my abortive attempt is that I compiled my
first programs on the Sparc here at school. (this is coming from an
dictionary-definition end user, so its a big deal to me)

Thanks to everyone who helped me out. Maybe someday I'll be able to afford
Spectre. (hah, right!)

I have some problems with the VDI function 'copy raster opaque'.

I tried to save ( and restore later) a rectangular area of the
hi rez screen.

I've used follwing routine:

VOID copy_block(dest_adr, src_adr, x, y, w, h)
BYTE *dest_adr;
BYTE *src_adr;
WORD x, y, w, h;

{ WORD line;
MFDB dest_mfdb;
MFDB src_mfdb;
WORD pxyarray[8];

line = (Getrez()==2)?80:160; /* get number of Words in scanline */
src_mfdb.fd_addr = src_adr;
src_mfdb.fd_w = work_out[0]+1;
src_mfdb.fd_h = work_out[1]+1;
src_mfdb.fd_wdwidth = line;
src_mfdb.fd_stand = 0; /* use device specific format */
src_mfdb.fd_nplanes = 4>>Getrez();
pxyarray[0] = x;
pxyarray[1] = y;
pxyarray[2] = x+w+3;
pxyarray[3] = y+h+3;

dest_mfdb = src_mfdb; /* dest_mfdb is identical .. */
dest_mfdb.fd_addr = dest_adr; /* except the address */
pxyarray[4] = x;
pxyarray[5] = y;
pxyarray[6] = x+w+3;
pxyarray[7] = y+h+3;

(VOID) v_hide_c(VdiHandle);
vro_cpyfm(VdiHandle, 3, pxyarray, &src_mfdb, &dest_mfdb);
(VOID) v_show_c(VdiHandle, 0);
}

The routine will be entered by a call like

copy_block(Logbase(), temp, xdial, ydial, wdial, hdial);

Now, can someone tell me, what's wrong ?

Using Getrez() here is a major sin. You can calculate them from work_out[0],
and you can even forget about these parameters if you use the method
suggested below.

Again, this is a SIN.

Don't use Logbase() in a VDI context. Just use 0L as a pointer to
the current screen. VDI will automatically convert this to the
actual address needed and will even fill in the word width and plane
count parameters in the MFDB automatically!

Don't use Getrez(). This code will crash under nearly all graphics cards
(MATRIX, MGE, OverScan, Reflex) and even on the TT.
If you blit to / from the screen you must set fd_addr = NULL. In this
case all other values are filled in by the VDI. You can't know how many
BytesPerLine the actual graphics card has.
For the 'offscreen' MFDB, you must use w/16*planes. It does not matter if
the BPL in the offscreen area is different to the screen MFDB (As in
OverScan mode or with the Reflex card), the VDI handles this correctly.

You get the plane count with the vq_extend call or in the AES global[10]
array but NOT with Getrez()!

Don't intercept VDI and XBIOS calls. The Xbios calls are only for the
'main console' of the ST and not for a graphics card. (But most cards
have an emulation of the calls). If you use Getrez() with a Matrix card
installed, you will get the rez of the (probably not connected) ST-monitor.
With Physbase(), Setpallete, Setcolor there is the same problem.

Your main 'bug' is in the pxy array. The '+3' copys more memory lines than
possible, so you get an bus-error in the color resolution.

Does anybody have WordPerfect 2.0 for the Mac running on
Spectre? I'm just wondering if it works.
