Put me in as a voter for this also. I really miss being able to use
DC Showit with NeoDesk. I don't really need all the other goodies that
DC Shower has to offer, as neat as they are. I just want DC ShowIt to
work with NeoDesk.

Rick Tatem asks:
"Has anyone any experience with a product called Video Key?"
I am using Video Key and am impressed with it. I discovered that
I rarely used my color monitor, except for playing games which is occasional.
Therefore, I sold my color monitor, using onl my NEC GS2A for monochrome
work.
VideoKey gives great color, with only a few dithering and color bleed
events--certainly not enough to hurt game playing. What will irritate you
is the poor resolution of your color tv. You may have to squint your eyes
a bit to read what used to be clear on your RGB.
VideoKey is increasingly difficult to find, though, since Practical
Solutions called it quits. I'd put out a call for a used one or check
the mail order places. I have seen the VideoKey going used for $35.00.
It retails out for about $85.00. Good luck!

Yes I have noticed the computers but only on the video version. While
sitting on the bridge in front of La Defense i have seen nothing on the
scene. I have also seen 5 pages in the magazine edited by Atari France on
the installation used by Jarre during the show.

Poor music but great multimedia show!

To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

Hello,

I just got Elvis, a wonderfull vi clone that even supports the abbr and
a tag command. Really nice, isn`t it. That`s what I thought, until I tested
it under mgr. It didn`t work. Then just pure MiNT with the simple shell.
It didn`t work too! It just doesn`t do anything. doesn`t build up a screen nor
accept any keystrokes (that`s what it did in mgr too).

Who could tell me that this isn`t true (or tell me, how to do it better)?

My second question is: why does elvis doesn`t do well on german keyboards?
The umlauts work fine, but []{}\@ get unreachable, until I remap them, so
the umlauts get a problem. And finally the []\ keys are unable to recognize
both alt and shift key, so that remapping []{} to the original alt-shift
sequences is also impossible.

I just received an offer from GFA for an upgrade from 3.0 to 3.5 for
$49. Has anyone had any experience with this version?
Does anyone know what is included in the package? (New manual, compiler,

There is also an offer for an MS-DOS version. They claim that programs
are portable, but I don't know what that means exactly.

I just got my copy (it's 3.6). For the upgrade price you only get a
few manual pages with the Matrix commands documented. It does include
both the interpreter and the compiler.

>There is also an offer for an MS-DOS version. They claim that programs
>are portable, but I don't know what that means exactly.

The MS-DOS version (which I also received) is an expanded version of
the ST version. Since both versions allow rather low level messing
with their hosts, there is no real way to insure that programs are
universal across all machines. But if you stick to the higher level
type commands (including the higher level graphical interfaces) you
should be able to write code that is mostly transportable.

The MS-DOS version (versions actually) comes on four disks. There
is the one for chips up to the 286 and one for chips up to the
486. They also have versions which incorporate the co-processor
chips in both of the above versions -- four variations, one per
disk.

There are two manuals, one is a command reference and one is a
user's manual. The compiler will be shipped to all purchasers
when it is complete. In the meantime, they again provide the
run-only version for distribution to anyone.

Since they now bundle the compiler with the interpreter in the ST
version, they have dropped the ST run-only version.

They claim to be working on a Unix version. I will buy that when
it comes out, too.

Two questions:

First, is there any way to connect a Star Gemini Printer (with a Commodore 64
interface) to an Atari ST?

Second, a local PC user blew away his son's hard disk (software wise) and
wants to do a low-level format, etc. He does not know which HD driver to
select from his installer option. He has a Western Digital HD with the
number WD 93044-A on it (serial # 028637). What drive(s) is this equivalent
to (# of heads, # cylinders, etc). Thanks.

Finally, I have had very limited success with posting question of a techincal
nature. The moderator for info_a16 seems to like posting endless messages about
'the man with the pipe' and 'terminator 2' appearences of the Portfolio. However
question, like anyone have checkers for the TT, to get my postings in the
digests?

To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

I had been following the Calamus vs. Pagestream flamefest with
interest, because I thought this might be what I was after. After
trying Pagestream out, I don't think so ( even ignoring the fact that
it, version 1.8, crashed twice within an hour ).

Here are the constraints

1) PostScript output

2) Some graphics/layout ability; i.e. need to import diagrams.

3) Usable as a word processor

Now Pagestream ( or a more stable version thereof ) would fulfill
items one and two easily, but I don't think I could stand to watch the
line I'm typing flicker for long periods of time.

Essentially what I'm looking for is a high end word processor, I don't
need to flow text around graphics or fancy stuff. It doesn't seem to
me that Wordperfect has the wherewithal.

A couple of options already considered and rejected:

1) LaTeX; I don't mind it, but S.O. hates it. Is there a colour dvi previewer?
2) Spectre; this seems expensive, especially with buying a monochrome monitor.

Any suggestions?

Mail is great, I will summarize

Dear David & Mark,

Stop knocking Greg Carter:

>I just had to advise Greg here that he had better get a new minor. If he
>thinks he can get a job at any publisher, either newspaper or magazine or
>whatever, with his gawd-awful grammar (and spelling), he is sadly mistaken.

I think that Greg's doing really well:

> As for my Grammar, I am a computer scientist, not an english major.
>Just a journalism minor.

He obviously has the fundamentals of Journalism:

1. Forget the grammar, keep it short snappy and straight at the jugular

2. A fictional story is better than no story at all.

3. If the facts don't fit the story try innuendo and distortion and if all
else fails, outright lies.

4. When lost for a word use invective

By the way Greg, I'd forget the Computer Science, you seem to lack basic
competence; switch to Journalism, your a natural.

Several years back, I used to work at Federated and sold the Star
printers for Commodores. These used to have a "c" added to the name,
meaning that the printer interface was built-in. This kept the user
from buying user interfaces.
I would be quite sceptical if the Star Gemini 10c could be used with
an STe because of this built-in interface. It would take a lot of hacking,
I would think, but that is speculation on my part. A Gemini 10c is a standard
of its own neighborhood, incompatible with anything else.

For Sale: Supercharger IBM emulator for Atari ST (and TT), external
connection (no soldering!), uses Atari's monitor-disk drives-harddisk-etc,
NEC V30 chip (like 286 without protected mode) at 8mhz, math coprocessor slot,
can run concurrently with ST side, can launch IBM programs from ST's
desktop, use ST's mouse as a Microsoft-compatible mouse, runs most
programs I've tried (Turbo C++, Smalltalk/V, James Bond, Jeopardy,etc --
these programs not included), comes with DOS 4.01 (with DOSSHELL),
excellent for students - run your IBM programs for class on your Atari,
etc. Windows 3.0 is supposed to work on it.

Software version 1.4 (newest)...

Oh, has its own 1 meg RAM (so anyone from 512k to 4 meg can use it!)

Price: $300, comes in original box, cables, DOS 4.01.

If interested, please leave me e-mail (rjast1@unix.cis.pitt.edu)

It sure does work. If your ST doesn't have an RF modulator built-in this
was made for you. However, as most people know TVs aren't as good
resolution as monitors and using med. rez on my TV at least is nearly
impossible. I guess it depends on your TV. Low rez is OK though.

Subject: what I think about GEM
To: <INFO-ATARI16@naucse.cse.nau.edu>

Here's another comment about GEM. Its brevity of features has given
us something that other computers really are not keen on, or at least,
as successful as the ST's implimentation: alternate desktops.
What I think is so incredibly slick about the Atari ST is that the
user can choose whatever desktop that he wants. He can get it enhanced
via PD/FreeWare/ShareWare utilities, including Gemini, or he can really
blow it high with HotWire or NeoDesk. And the really neat thing is that
none of these shells cause the ST to bog down or run slowly, as other
systems do (Windows).
Count your blessings. We've got a very fast system here, even when
running at 8mhz. I have had more than one "outsider" to remark on the
speed of the ST. Is GEM lacking in things? Sure, it is. But look what
it has given us as a result.
I'd bet that DoubleClick and Codehead would not have nearly as as many
neat utilities that they have been so graciously giving us, if the GEM
desktop was locked (as the Mac desktop), or loaded with "features". I
love it.
