There aren't many good books on programming left buyable for
the Atari ST series computers. The only source for printed information
seems to be Atari (the "official" developers docs). It sure would
be nice if some of the more capable programmers would get together
and put out another new set of books.

_Both_ UK ST mags (STUser & STFormat) are reporting AtariUK's intentions to
make available a CD-I peripheral for the ST/TT (one mag reports the spec). They
warn the drooling reader that purchase availability is likely to be
early/mid-92 with a guestimated price tag of 400 pounds sterling.

Let's hope that Atari's marketing management make a better job of CD-I than
they did with CD-ROM.

ST Club Finland has a multi-line BBS running on an Mega ST 4 and
the software is Michtron BBS v3.0. We are quite satisfied with the
software, but it can not be run on a TT. As there is more users
on-line the Mega ST is running out of power.

So does anyone know a BBS-software running on TT and/or other
multi-line BBS-software?

someone please send me an address and/or telephone number for where I could get

Why do you want to do this? For security purposes?

The easiest way is to write a program that opens a file and keeps
writing some filler character to it (say, 0xe5) until the partition
fills up. This will cause every sector on the disk to be used, except
for those that are marked in the FAT as "bad" or "in-use" (and except
also for a few at the end of the partition that, because of a bug in
Gemdos, are never used). Then close the file and delete it. To make
this reasonably efficient, you should set up a large buffer in memory,
fill it with the filler character, and then write out the whole buffer
at once.

I can think of one possible problem with this approach. Sometimes a
disk becomes corrupted and contains blocks that are marked "in-use" in
the FAT but are not a part of any current files. (This will happen,
for example, if a directory entry gets clobbered.) The above procedure
would not erase those blocks. You would first need to use a disk
analyzer to locate and free them.

If you are dealing with really sensitive data, just writing over it
might not be enough. I am told that sometimes the old data can be
recovered off of magnetic media by use of special equipment, since
writing the new data does not completely obliterate the old. (This is
a bit like erasing something written in pencil and then writing
something new on top. A faint shadow of the original writing
remains.)

Maybe the Double Click people would be interested in producing such a
program in the "program-of-the-week" series.

The person who did the port disappeared off the face of the earth, and didn't
make the source code available before doing so.

Ok, not quite that bad. I did the port, didn't finish, and moved from Michigan
to California, losing my main development system in the process. I was using a
borrowed NeXT machine with gcc set up as a cross-compiler to build it. I have
yet to restore my files off NeXT optical disk onto a more usable medium here
in my new environment... I never kept the source on my ST, so it is still
inaccessible at the moment.

To: INFO-ATARI16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

Distribution-File:
INFO-ATARI16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

Here is a little programme to reproduce the shifter problem that exists
in the MEGA STEs. Since it uses only legal system calls Atari cannot blame
bad software.

Just run the programme on a MEGA STE and watch what happens to the
display. If the shifter is one of the bad ones then most of the time the
displayed area on the screen will shift a varying amount to the left of
normal (equivalent to 1, 2 or 3 character positions). Run the programme
repeatedly and if the screen jumps about as described then your machine is
broken, if not then it's O.K.

I have included a UUD'ed version for those who don't have an assembler.

Have fun,

Paul.

Well the obvious answer is to buy her an ST. Before you start to flame,
remember that you posted this to c.s.a.s as well. By the way, she might
even save money that way, PC software prices beeing what they are.

Hope this helps,

First off, the ST Mac Plus emulator is spelled SPECTRE, not
Specture. Secondly the "other computer" is called "Apple" not "apple".
And the program is called "II in a Mac" not "2 in a amac".
Sheesh!
II in a Mac works perfectly with the Spectre GCR, or did on the last
release that I used it on (2.65c). It is woefully slow, like the IBM
emulator, PC DITTO (software version). However, it does work and works
quite good.
How amazing, an emulator running an emulator. grin
