Who cares?

All *I* am concerned with is how fast the graphics are. Anything apart from
moving rectangles around is faster on the ST than the Amiga. Yeah, the
Amiga is wonderful for arcade games. But I prefer 3D stuff.

NOW FUCK OFF.

Yes.

Serious applications. (You do know what those are, don't you?)

Only according to Commodore's figures.

Nope. I've not looked hard enough to find a dealer selling Amigas.

Oh, Compute books. That would explain it. I bet they didn't use Line-A or
the GEM graphics functions.

NOW FUCK OFF.

Well, perhaps if you and the rest of the Amiga fundies would stop sending
each other congratulatory email messages and read a few magazines, you'd
know about AVR / 2 Bit Systems' 16-bit sampling units for the ST.

Although if you want to make music, the Evolution EVS-1 would be much better
with its FM synthesis and PCM rhythm sounds. Programmed from a Desk
Accessory, by the way, so you don't need to quit from your sequencer.

NOW FUCK OFF.

Well, at long last Commodore has made one good design decision when building
a floppy disk system. About time.

Subject: How to "unpack" and "decode"?
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

Hi!

I recently bought an atari 1040 st. There were very little programs
to go with it so now I've got the bright idea to get some nice
programs from comp.binaries.atari or from some archive.
However I don't know how to do that...
I tried some code from comp.atari.binaries tonight with meager
result. I am in a unix environment, I use emacs, I put the
message from comp.atari.binaries in a buffer, kill all lines up
to "tables" and save this in a file. Then I do 'uudecode foo'.
This results in a message that each and every line has got the
checksum wrong. Should some unpacking be done before uudecode?
What I try to do is to change an "article" in
comp.atari.binaries to a program that I can use on my atari!
I imagined that I could change the article to executable (by the atari)
binari-code using unix commands. Then I would dowmload the
file with binari-code to my atari and try the program...
This is stupid?
Could someone direct me to some tutorial on how
to do things like this? I need some step by step manual
(obviously...).

best regards Anders

I can confirm the problem of the bad sound/display chip in my MEGA STE.

I orginally just thought it was the way it was suppose to be.

Now that you describe in detail what I experience, lines on screen at 8Mhz,
scratchy sound etc..

All I have to say, is...I AM NOT SURPRISED.

Look, when you buy from Atari, you GET what you pay for. Like it or lump it.

Distribution-File:
INFO-ATARI16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

Hi,

Regarding the problems detailed by Lars-Erik Osterud and others,
I thought you might like to know that here in France we are also having trouble
with the MEGA STE. Myself and two friends each bought one from our local dealer
on the same day (the day he received his first batch of 8 machines). All three
show the same problems that Lars-Erik observed - so it is not surprising that
John Janssen saw the same thing on every machine in the shop he bought his at.
It is obviously a faulty integrated circuit (the GSTSHIFTER). Since I do not
want to invalidate my guarantee I don't intend to open up my machine to look at
the number, but from what Lars-Erik said it looks like the reference number
marked on the chip has been changed since the STE range was first introduced,
but the chip's functionality has not ( since the old and new versions are
interchangable). It is probable that the mask has been changed (different
manufacturer?) and so a bug has crept in.

I think we should try to get all the MEGA STE owners to check
their machines and if it has problems to complain to Atari. Perhaps it would be
interesting first of all to get victims to stand up and be counted on the net.

By the way I see my video shifting when I boot OS-9/ST V2.4
which I received last week from Microware France (the port was in fact done
Germany by Dr Teil DatenTechnik).

Happy campaigning,

Paul.

To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

A while ago i purchased an SM125 b/w monitor for only 150DM (about 85$, it was
determined for use in UK), but w/o any warranty. As i connected it to my good
old 1040, i realized that the missing warranty for this thing had a reason:

Nothing appeared on the screeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEN :-( :-( :-(

After examining the monitor, i found the line transformer (i hope this is the
right word; i mean the high voltage transf. for the CRT) defect. I contacted
a few adresses i knew here in Germany and tried to get this essential part
but had no success. :-( again

Now my question/request/entreaty/prayer/supplication to you:

- Does anybody know where i can get this transformer? It's really urgent!!!
- What does this thing cost???
- Can anybody provide adresses of MAIL orders which sell this thing???
- Could anybody possibly be so kind and purchase this thing and send it to me
to Germany????

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanx

I don't want to start a war, so I'd appreciate hearing directly from
users of either of these programs with their opinions on how
reasonable these programs are. I have to document some ST software
I've written, and I'd like to use one of these to do it. I've used
programs like FrameMaker, PageMaker, Ventura Pujblisher, etc. How do
these compare???

I need to do things like the following:

1) Import text and auto-insert pages as necessary

2) Auto-number figures, tables, etc.

3) Create Table of Contents, Index, etc.

4) Import, clip, and change palette of graphics in formats like
degas.

I'd appreciate any info anyone could provide. Thanks!

The way UW works is the following (given that everything ftp'ed ok):

1. Run win.prg. You should be presented with one window.
2. Dial in from this window, using the ATDT command.
3. Log into your Unix system, and fire up the server binary.
4. At this point, you can create new windows with the drop down menu
entries.

One problem may be that the config file (a text file in there somewhere)
defines what size/font the first window is. If these settings have been
tampered with, the program may blow up. Send me email if you still have
problems, and I will sit down and refresh my memory on the details.

UW for the ST was ported from the Mac, so many of the doc files refer to the
Mac. Win.prg (or uw.prg if you are using the euro version) will run on your
ST.
