Have you tried Double-CLick's DCBOOTIT? It says that it'll (usually)
fool a boot disk into thinking that it's been auto booted--which sounds
like that's just what you need.
BTW, I'll throw my vote with ++jrb--I'd like to see some source, too.
Some of the programs have had potential to make my life easier, but
just won't *quite* integrate smoothly with my setup.
If you can't/won't do this (which I would sort of understand, I'd just
be mildly disappointed) I hereby request a revision of the program
that allows you to turn floppies on/off and set their step rates--I'd
love an auto program which would read a configuration and set it (like
to automatically set my 5.25" B drive for 6ms) seamlessly, with no
intervention--or at least a version that I could set as my GEM auto
boot prg, and not notice when it executes, sets the stuff, and then
exits. I don't want to have to do this stuff manually. (I know, I know,
it's a simple prog to write, but I'm too lazy :~)
Oh, yeah, stop the amiga flame war: specifically to Tom Hill--you have
released your information, please let people come to you, because as
long as you continue to post, people willcontinue to flame, and that's
too much to wade through at 1200 baud. I, too like the amiga, mostly,
though there'r some things about the OS that bother me--but I'll seek
you out if I decide to switch. In the meantime, please wait somewhere
else--your unfortuate remarks are making it hard for me to get any
info for the ST I have *now*.
THanks, all. :~)

Julian,
WordPerfect is doing fine in the US, just not on ST platforms! It's a real hot
seller in V5.0 for the IBM. I guess the developers don't see enough $$$ in
doing an ST version, and that's that.
If this keeps up, pretty soon, I'm going to have to write all my own

I think that a discussion of chip technology is wholly
relevant to this newsgroup, as long as Motorola 680x0 chips are a
main part of the discussion. I shouldn't use the term war, I
consider this to be a "discussion".

I don't have MFLOPS statistics myself, so I'll take your
for truth. You mention a Weitek math coprocessor, which is not
made by Intel. That is something separate which is an additional
cost beyond the 486. Also, MFLOPS stands for "millions of
floating point operations per second". That is very important for
some programs (such as ray-tracers), but less relevant for other
programs, such as DTP. That's why benchmarks stink. For a DTP
application, MIPS is more important, although I'd prefer to hear
some Dhrystones and SpecMarks numbers as well.

Isn't that great? A unix box that costs less that an Amiga 3000 and it
even has ethernet built in.... Maybe you should have waited longer than
6 years to make your decision...

Of course there is. Buy a NeXT. I can get a NeXT with a 100M HD, 2.88M
floopy, a MUCH better user interface, built in sound digitizer, *nix OS (MACH)
plus many other ammenities for less than a Amiga 3000.... So
please, don't cop the attitude that Amiga is the best buy for the money.
Wake up... Steve Jobbs strikes again... (and I could add 32bit color
for $1500 more) And, the NeXT has a 68040, display postscipt and a
400dpi laser printer... (I have an Atari 520 and I would still buy one
today... of course, I would get my NeXT too...)

I can't really debate the reasoning behind now moving this discussion to
the comp.sys.amiga.advocacy SIG. The original message has grown into something
that wasn't really it's original intent. I have been able to help close to
twenty Atari users so far, so the message has served it's purpose. I read and
listened to those Email replies whichdiscussed this in a civil manner (Most
of the hostile messages were deleted before I finished reading them). For this
reason I'll ask everybody who expects a reply to leave your message in the
comp.sys.amiga.advocacy SIG. One final note: Please re-read the original
message with an open mind and see what I mean about "growing into something".

How to set up GCC--a simple tutorial:
1) You need to get the appropriate packages from a.a.u.e. Right now, I
am not sure just where these are-I've been using a port of GCC 1.39
from John R. Dunning, and it works well. You probably need to (if I
remember right (I've looked at all the files, and Think I remeber what's
in them)) get gasbin01.zoo (the assembler), gccbin01.zoo, (the driver,
the compiler, the preprocessor), and the utlbin20.zoo (the utilities, of
which, the most important are the linker and the librarian). If you want
the source debugger, you should get gdbbin01.zoo (the dbgger). Then you
need to get libolb68.zoo, and if you want gem, gembin17.zoo. Then you
need to get the include files, includ68.zoo. I think this is all--it's
close. Note: I have not used these files, but I think I trust Graham
Higgins, and they should work.
2) Move them to your Atari. This will probably take several floppys,
or several hours of downloads.
3) Get yourself several MB free--I would recommend the 4MB machine--
you won't be able to compile big programs in 1MB--GCC *loves* memory--
and unarc the files (or unzoo, as the case may be). I recommend you put
all the binaries in a directory bin all the libraries and object files
in a directory lib(that's all the .olb and .o files), and all the
includes in inc
4) You need to set the env vars GCCEXEC ("g:incc-" <-notice the gcc-
prefix, it's important), GCC_EXEC_PREFIX (same as GCCEXEC), GNULIB (the
obvious, w/no backslash) and GNUINC (same as GNULIB). Then you need to
set TEMP. This must have NO BACKSLASH. I assume you're using a shell,
too.
5) Write you a program, and call gcc with:
gcc -v -o wombat.ttp wombat.c
-v means verbose. -O means optimize. -c means don't link. Check the
manual for others.
Enough for now, my fingers hurt. Be sure to post any questions.

Frankly, I recommend everyone to buy ICD stuff, be it internal or external.
The problem of hard drives is much of a software nature and I think most
people agree that ICD's are the best. And then you can buy any of the
SCSI drives in the market. Mine is Conner Peripherals' SCSI drive housed
by a Japanese case and power supply, etc. and it is quieter than my MEGA ST.
The speed? It is rather slow but 570 KB per second, which isn't too bad (
I understand 500+ KB per second things are generally regarded as fast).

ONLY, repeat ONLY iff 1) there is full source for ST, Unix, VMS, and
whatever, 2) ONLY (again) if there is only ONE, repeat, ONE version,
fully controlled by ONE group (not 10+ like lharc), 3) ONLY if it is
so much better than zoo (2.01 or 2.10 or the new, soon to be released
version) that it is much faster (both compression and decompression),
much easier to use (command line interface, arguably zoo's single
weakness, with hooks to add it to arcgsh et al for those prefering
GEM), much better compression, much more feature laden, but not so
much as to get in the way, etc.
please do NOT start posting archives in this format. i would propose
a vote (here?), preceded by extensive testing (on ALL platforms) before
this happens. and i am reluctant to use anything labeled "beta" for
archival. beta s/w should be used by beta testers, NOT the entire

I simply cut my Atari cable and soldered in a pair of DB-15's. They're
really easy to find. When I got tired of switching monitors by changing
DB-15 plugs, I built a switch using a 7-pole rotary, and some MORE DB-15's.
The one I found in a surplus store for $US 3.95 had 5 positions, but I only
used two.
