I just got done sending the latest Program of the week to the terminator site
(atari.archive.umich.edu) where you can ftp all of our freeware programs, just
do a: cd atari/dc
and viola!
I also just sent the latest program to the moderated newsgroup. You should see
the file this year... :-)
DC Drop DTR will drop the computer's RS232 DTR line for one second,
then reassert the line. This should hangup any modem which is
connected. Program suggested by James Faircloth.
100% assembly. ST, STe and TT compatible. Program of the week.

Northern California Jewish Bulletin, 9/6/91, page 16:
"Israel finally OKs Atari deal, waiting for Tramiel"
"After months of haggling and intrigue, Atari and Israel have cleared what may
be the final hurdle allowing the computer company to set up a plant in Israel
- but snags and wild rumors still persist.
"The Israeli Cabinet gave its OK Sunday to the final phase of a deal for Atari
to build a $150 million computer-parts plant there."
The article continues giving the troubled history of the deal, detailing the
specifics of the factory and associated investment company, and various
accusations of foot-dragging on both sides.
Continuing:
"Meanwhile, a new twist further casts the deal in doubt - a rumor that Atari
will file for bankruptcy.
"[Israeli] Treasury officials said Sunday that an investigation by the
accountant-general showed the computer giant is close to bankruptcy - placing
doubt on whether the government will receive any returns from its generous
package of grants and tax breaks to the factory."

I would love to purchase the NEC 3D, but the monitor is $550.00, I just don't
wish to spend that much on a monitor that is interlaced at 1024x768.
I wonder what would .28mm do? the SONY 1304 HG is .25mm, if it only works
with a simple adjustment, I wouldn't mind as much, but just needed to know
if it is going to run with it.
TO HOWARD CHU, didn't you have a Panasync 1391? Did this monitor work
for both modes? (.31 mm I believe.)

You are correct. I was assuming that cfg_ch was available to all C
libraries. Getch() and Putch() are commonly available it seems, but I
only heard about cfg_ch in this newsgroup. In general though, I still
think that the second method would be more compatible than the first,
since it doesn't access the system directly by skipping over the library.

I asked Bob Brodie a similar question on Compuserve a while ago, coming
at it from a different angle, and got a fairly clear reply. I asked what
the differences were between TOS 1.60 and 1.62, and he stated that there
were exactly two differences:
1) fix for the DESKTOP.INF/low-res boot problem (formerly fixed
by STEFIX.PRG)
2) fix for the memory pool problem (formerly fixed by POOLFIX3.PRG)

If a GEMDOS program is going to terminate, which may happen either
intentionally by calling Pterm(retcode) from the program (exit()

CTRL-C has been pressed), a exception routine evt_term is called within

After all, that Ctrl-C is terminating programs, is not as bad as it looks
on first sight. Only for interactive programs like editors or spreadsheets
or the like you should use either this routine or BIOS I/O as recommended
by other authors. A bprintf() routine may be easily implemented by the
use of vsprintf() and Bconout().

Hello out in ST-netland! I own a 1040 ST, and just purchased a modem, but I
don't have any term software. Can anyone
a) tell me what kind of commercial software is the best, or
b) tell me an ftp site where I can obtain some software.
I'm looking for something that can emulate VT200 or better, and ANSI emulation.
Maybe even Zmodem. 8) If anyone has ANY information, please E-mail it to me!

The most powerful package is Uniterm, available free from
atari.archive.umich.edu. The easiest to use is Flash 1.6, from Antic (
I use both. There is also STalker, which has seen some good reviews here on
the net (I have not seen/used this one). I really like the user interface
that Flash provides, but it does not include Kermit. For those occasions
when I need this capability, I use Uniterm.

Hi:
As far as the STacy is concerned:
The LCD display bites. The backlight is too low and the screen has a
really bad ghosting problem. Also there is a big problem with hatching
on the screen when diplaying large dark areas.
The trackball is O.K., but sticks now and then, and the buttons are in a
very inconvenient place, making the ball thumb oriented, not index
finger based, which is difficult to controll, as well as bad for your
hand.
The keyboard is O.K., but the numberpad and functionkeys are too small,
which is unacceptable when you see all the extra space on the keyboard.
It weighs over 15 pounds, which makes it as a real pain in the ass to
transport.
THERE IS NO INTERNAL BATTERY, AND NO FACILITIES TO INCORPORATE ONE.
TOTALLY UNACCEPTALBE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The case design is shoddy, and some of the things that are touted as
features are really just a pain in the ass, such as the port cover on
the back. It is supposed to operate as a stand when open, but always
slams shut while you are typing, and everyone I know who has one has
just taken it off entirely.
No blitter, not even a socket.
Well, my suggestion is to skiop the STacy and the Mac luggable, and go
with the ST Book, or the new Mac PowerBook, which will be out in
October. At least these have a battery!!!!!!!!!!!!

Subject: Stuck floppy drive

My internal floppy drive on my stock 1040 seems to slow down and stop
when trying to read some disks (3M brand always) and does fine on other
disks (Sony). Any suggestions? I did open up the case and tried to clean
out the spindle - are there any safe/recommended ways to lubricate it?

real data 0x0d,0x0a in which case a search could kill the giffing.
i think you want to filter the data and convert 0x0d,0x0a to 0x0a.
read from binary file (not stdin!) and write to binary file (not
stdout!).
i think the original port was done
on a system with a unix-like environment, i.e. no distinction between
text and binary files. if there are diffs available (are there?)
you might try adding a "-o output_file" rather than using stdout.
make sure you open this "wb" in the ppmtogif code.
most shells cannot/do not make stdout binary mode.

come accros some programs that require it (eg. DC MouseMeter). However, I
haven't been able to find it; if any one either knows where I can get it,

I have a new model Atari mouse (identified by a circular ball door and large
teflon sleeves on the rollers) that has withstood 3 years of hard use without
a problem. I agree that the previous mouse designs sucked (those with the
bare metal bars). All after-market mice that I have seen for the ST have
a DPI rating that makes it very easy to overload the ST mouse scanning
hardware (that is, the DPI is too high). Others have disagreed with this
in a previous thread, just MHO.
