Is atari offering any trade-ins or upgrades for it's 520 STs? I have
one of the very first STs with Tos in ROM. I'd rather trade it in (if
there's an offer for STe's) than to upgrade memory...

Maybe I missed something, since I don't read this group often, but
Could someone please tell me what happened to START magazine? Last I heard
they were going bi-monthly, but I haven't gotten anything from them since.
Thanks to whoever posted the address for CN. Now, can someone give me an
address for Sideline Software? Do they have a free catalogue?

Before we get TOO excited, I should mention that the main reason I
never posted the converter before is that the sound quality you get
from the resulting sounds sort of, well, leaves "something to be
desired". It works, but some sounds come out better than others.
(I've never been able to understand why the uLaw encoding process seems
to lose information. You should be able to get 8-bit resolution back.
BTW, I did it two different ways, both by the uLaw spec, and both
sounded about the same. Hmmm.)
The digistuf.arc that's currently up on atari.archive is OLD. I did
post the new digistuf.arc but the good fellows at atari.archive haven't
put it up yet. (They have real lives too?!?!?) In any case, my
announcement was perhaps premature. Sorry for the confusion, folks.
Look for digistuf.arc next week.

Just one recommendation; I've been using ReadRight with a Logitech
hand-held scanner on my IBM at work, and-- with a few problems-- it's easily
the best OCR on the market.

Well, in my old user group (WACE) we had a cure for that..
Lift the computer about three inches off the table, and drop it!
I know this sounds drastic, but it works.. The condition you described is
usually due to some of the chips inside being loose, and dropping the computer
is like droping a hammer on its handle to push the head on tighter..
(NOTE: Although this works, don't hold me responsible if your St winds up in
several small and inconvenient peices :) )

All Static straps have a 1 meg 1 watt resistor fitted in them, so make
sure you fit one of these, this will stop you being killed ,
wire this resistor in the far end of the lead, and cover it with
heat shrink tubing.

them to atari.archive.umich.edu for anonymous FTP. Some have been

The Vault 3.0. The best in Atari hard disk backup just got better!
If you use The Vault, upgrade to version 3.0. It is totally
rewritten, has a much better user interface, and has been well tested
for half a year now. And it still writes TOS-format disks with the
same speed it always has. I you don't use The Vault, try it -- you'll
like it.
If you have any questions, comments or problems with any of the above
programs, please send a message directly to me at
fischer-robert@cs.yale.edu. A message posted to a newsgroup will
never get to me, because I don't read newsgroups.

A. Pratt from Atari posted info about TT RAM a while back. Here in the U.S.
one can purchase TT/2, TT/4 or TT/8. The TT/2 is ST RAM 2M on the Mother
Board. To upgrade or purchase TT/4 you will get 2M more of ST RAM on
a ST RAM daughter board. To upgrade or purchase TT/8 you will get another
daughter board with TT RAM - another 4M of RAM (these are SIMMs -
no SIMMs for ST RAM).

You can expand ST RAM to get a total of 10M. If you replace the 1M SIMMs
from the TT RAM daughter board with 4M SIMMs you will get 16M of TT (fast)
RAM. That means total memory could be 10M + 16M = 26M.

You may not want a TT - STe is much cheaper and you can update memory with
SIMMs.
I have a TT and a ST. Many programs run on both, but of course, most games from
the ST will probably not run on the TT. I believe that all of the Double Click
Software that has been posted in the binaries is ST and TT compatible.

I have DC Xtract 2.0 and find it Very buggy, not very useful with
Folders, will include the Folder name of the Files that they are in,
also this UNLZH172 will not work with Questers new LZH 2.0a,
If you wan't the best Pack use LZH 2.0a, and it will unpack any
LZH file.
But I find DC Xtract very slow, I have left a few messages to DC about
the problems with DC Xtract but to no evail.

I would like to report that I have done some recent tests with
arc, zip, zoo, and (gasp) lharc. I have tried both ".prg" files
and tried plain text files. In my tests, lharc always had the best
compression ratios. But I know from earlier experience, that some
compressors do better with certain kinds of data than others do, so
I don't make the claim that lharc always has a better compression
ratio.
I suppose that once someone spends a lot of time playing with three
or four different versions of lharc, they might feel comfortable with
picking one version to run on one machine and another version to run
on another. Frankly, it makes me nervous, and I dont know whose
advice to trust when it comes to picking the version of lharc to use
on my machine. What I do know is that right now, I have some ".lzh"
files around that can not be extracted by "lharc_X" and I have some
other ".lzh" files that can not be extracted by "lharc_Y". (Names
changed to protect the guilty.)
What I would like to see now is a review by someone who does not have
an axe to grind who would advise me about the advantages and
disadvantages of the most recent lharc programs and make some solid
recommendations. I want to read a reasoned argument, and not
someone who shouts "Use X!" or "Use Y!", or "Its the best thing
since sliced bread!".
I do not insist on having the source code, but what I have now, and
what I want from any new archiver I might choose, is to be able
to run on my current favorite UN*X box, on my ST, and on the PC
at the office. (I hold out little hope for the Mac, in this regard;
Mac users seem steeped in stuffit and binhex. :-).
I have seen that there is some hope, because compression ratios
are enough better with lharc to stimulate my interest, but there is
this incompatability problem that I still worry about.

I no longer have troubles, either. The problem was due to an
ill-behaved program that destroyed the cookie jar. (The latter
program has since been fixed!) That's why things worked when
MACCEL3.PRG was loaded last but not when it was loaded first. Thanks
