These are files compressed with UN*X compress(1); uncompress with
uncompress(1).
There is an ST version of compress - you'd use compress -d to uncompress.

This sounds great - Here in Oz I have nowhere to get it (I can read German

Take a look in the printing/pbm directory at atari.archive: the pbm-bin.zoo
file
contains a zillion programs to convert from graphics format A to format B.
PIx
and GIF are mentioned, so there should be a path between them.

has a page describing the Exensible Vitrual Toolkit--"XVT implements
a single, layered interface with a set of libraries (one per gui) and
a common C language header file. . .Together the library and header file
present you with C functions that transparently invoke the
native functions of the target gui"
"Will be available for PC compatibles, Macs, Amigas and other
systems". Will this mean that the ST will get the benifits of this as
well?

I know only the ethernet adress of that node, I cant remember the name:
it was 134.95.64.1, its somewhere in koeln in germany
The stuff is in atari/gnu/g++/cs, but it has no debugger :-(

I recently started to use OPUS. I would like to use the charting
functions but that requires GDOS. Since OPUS is the only program
I run which requires GDOS I am unfamiliar with the beast. I do have
a copy of GDOS version 1.1 which was included on a Word Flair demo
disk. Anyway, I have GDOS but where do I get screen and printer
fonts? Also, is there a good GDOS primer out there somewhere?

I posted this question on GEnie about a year ago when I got TOS 1.4 put
in my 1040ST. One of the ST wizards (one of the CodeHeads or one of the
Double-Click boys, I don't remember for sure) came up with the answer:

Apparently, LOGO under TOS 1.4 uses (or at least thinks that it uses)
all available memory when it loads. I haven't programmed in years but I
would think it would be a simple matter to patch LOGO to correct this.
(HINT, HINT to Atari. Or better yet, why not release an updated version
of Logo to take advantage of the new machines? :-)

Hello world,
I have been running METAFONT (mf.arc from the mail server in Utrecht) to make
the printer fonts for my NEC P6. Since a definition of a NEC mode did not work
(something `hard wired` in the preloaded mf ?), I had to cheat: I adapted the
mode_def `dover' to 360 dpi, and ran the packet for scaled and unscaled fonts.
While the output of unscaled fonts is o.k., for _scaled_ fonts I get the error
message by `mydvi': Wrong magnification!
The PKTYPE-output (see appendix) shows a resolution of 256 dpi (?). Scaled
PK-files sent in the NEC-P6-HIGH packet by S.Lindner are in 512 dpi resolution
and seem to work. Also the `Design size' is different.
- What does the `resolution' mean?
- Did I forget a crucial parameter for mf ?
- What's a preloaded version? Does this mean that plain.bas in somehow
included in mf.ttp?
- How do you make a preloaded version yourself (that (un)dump-business)?
All answers (preferably by e-mail, I'll summarize) are greatly appreciated,

Will anyone who has been experiencing problems with the minix filesystem
for MiNT 0.8 please mail me full info , this site has been known to miss
the occasional post or two,so mailing me is the only sure way to let me
know , so that any problems can be fixed.
By 'problem' I mean anything no matter how trivial , I am
particularly interested in anything that makes 'fsck' complain , non
recognition of minix partitions , disk-change problems , logical
partition problems (this should be OK now unless the minix partition
uses >1K sectors or any partition has >8K logical sectors).
I have not succeded in making fsck complain with my setup , ICD
drive and STE with TOS 1.6 , if you find a way then please tell me ,
1. What commands caused the problem .
2. What fsck reports (that is minix fsck not a TOS version!!!).
3. Any debugging output (if possible).
4. Your hardware , that is drive and driver software type and version of TOS.
5. Any other info you think may be useful.
Any other kinds of comments are welcomed , such as patches ,
suggestions and flames (if you must ) .
P.S. May I reiterate the comments in the docs , don't try using
minix partitions unless you are sure you know what you are doing. If you
think its a good idea to run TOS filesystem consistency checkers on
minix partitions then you *don't* know what you are doing :-)

Aha! Once you start using Emacs you'll know what to do with more than

Spend some time driving around downtown Windsor, Ontario in a van with
Dave Small and other Atari developers... talk a little with Charles F.
Johnson. Find out how close most developers are to losing everything
they've sweated and bled to build up. Talk with magazine publishers
and editors who can't pay their contributors because their advertisers
are either out of business or can't afford to pay their advertising
bills. Talk with dealers who have either gone out of business, losing
most of their investments in the Atari market, or who have been forced
to go on into other markets. Talk with current Atari dealers who can't
get products to sell, so they can stay in business.
Europe may be a different story, but in the U.S.A, Atari=dead.
Hopeful signs 1-5 = too little, too late.

Thanks. I have ftp'ed Mtools and read the manual. It is amazing! It says
I'll be allowed to read/write MSDOS partitions on the hard disk.
Now I have a query: Are my hard disk partitions in MSDOS format? I use
a year old ICD software with TOS 1.4 and the partitions are ear-marked as
TOS. Maybe I should ring ICD, but I don't like to ring at small hours.

Just got a copy from local dealer, the Vkiller 3.84 checked it OK.
Also checked the Uniterm that included on disk, here is some result:
1. Althought the date associated with the included Uniterm were some time in
87.
While the Uniter2.0E02 from atari.archive has date 86. The file size is
bigger
in 2.0E.
2. The version # on the Uniterm upon boot up, the atari.archive one shown
2.0E
and ST USER one shown 2.0C.
3. Once in the Help menu, pull down the Desk and look for the About ...
shows\
2.0E002 for atari.archive one and 2.0C014 for ST USER one.
So it looks like the 2.0E on the Atari.archive is latest not the ST USER
one.

I had a question for all the hardware gurus who know whats what about
the TT - like Alan Pratt, etc. I know that the TT uses a daughter-board
to use the TT "fast" memory, and that this board has chips that allow access
of up to 16MB of memory. What I was wondering is, is this 16MB limit a
limit
due to the daughter-board, a limit of the TT, or just a limit of the TOS?
For instance, would it be possible for a third party company (if Atari does't
do it themselves) to manufacture a daughter-board that accesses more than
the present 16MB?

PS: Is the unix/TT the same hardware with the new software, or are there any
hardware changes? New card slots? New ROMs (I had heard they couldn't run
ST software _and_ run the Unix software)?

I have upgraded my 1040 STFM to 4 megabytes with Z-RAM. My ST was one of those
with soldered MMU-chip, so I let a proffessional do it for me. When I got my
ST back I ran the test program. Geee, four megabytes and no complaints! I
started to install Neodesk 3, reads files from one disk and started writing on
another. Then suddenly the drive starts making noise. It sounds as if the
drives' motor tries to move the head right through the side of the machine.
Two dialog boxes explains that the drive does not answer and that the disk is
full, although it has 800 kilobytes free!!! A couple of minutes later I con-
clude that MY DRIVE READS AND FORMATS DISKS IN ALL POSSIBLE COMBINATIONS OF
SECTORS AND TRACKS, TWISTED AND NOT TWISTED, FROM GEM, FROM NEODESK 2.05 AND
FROM ALL PROGAMS THAT I HAVE BUT IT CANNOT WRITE MORE THAN A COUPLE OF KILO-
BYTES ON ANY DISK!!!
Now I am in desperate need of HELP!!! The proffessional will do his best to
fix it, but it would probably go much faster if anyone have had this problem
before and can give me any clue where to start dig. You cannot be to detailed.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A FEW MINUTES EXPERIMENTING

Equipment: 1040 STFM, monochrome monitor, Z-RAM and nothing more!
Inside Neodesk 2.05:
Trying to write to an empty disk formated before memory upgrade.
Drive writes some 10 K, makes noise, dialog boxes sais: Drive not responding.
Disk full.
I cancel writing, "Show info..." sais more than 800 K free.
Same test and same result again a couple of times.
Formats disk in different ways, same test, same result.
Try to load First Word +, Neodesk responds:
An address error has occured (3 bombs).

I pressed return, a fourth bomb showed up, all went black and the computer
rebooted.
I started Neodesk 2.05 again and then loaded 1st Word +, no problems!
Loaded a rather large document, changed to empty disk and tried to save.
Disk wrote some 10 seconds, then made that uggly noise again followed by
dialog boxes telling drive don't answer and (the empty) disk full.
I cancelled. Drive made noise, same boxes. Cancelled again etc.
I reset the computer, made the 1st Word + test again from GEM, computer
loads program and behaves as before.
Loaded Calamus (from Neodesk), played around a little. Rubberband boxes some-
times leave sides of the box unerased when changing size, in a way I never have
seen before. "Show statistics" tell me that I have 3.3 meg free.
Suddenly... 2 bombs! Crash is so hard that even Neodesk got stuck (never
happened before).
I GIVE UP.
UPDATE: A few hours later I made another test: I tried copying files to a
ram-disk (in GEM) and my ST bombed again. I restarted with the on/off
button and tried again a couple of times. Each time two files were
copied and then either one or two bombs showed up.
