To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
I have just run across the following back issues of ST-Log in
my plethora of Atari stuff:
Issue 10, January 1987
Issue 11, February 1987
Issue 12, March 1987
Issue 14, May 1987
Issue 15, June 1987
These are all in good condtion and still have covers, etc--which is
not surprising since I never owned an ST (but I was planning on it back
then). I just can't bring myself to throw them out so I'm giving each
issue away for a 9x12 SASE (use an old issue or similar sized magazine
to figure the postage). Just let me know which issue(s) you are
interested in and I'll reserve it for you. If you want the whole lot I
can also work out a special deal.

Subject: AMIGA BURNED UP MY PRINTER!
To: <INFO-ATARI16@naucse.cse.nau.edu>
Please excuse if this is a repeat, but I have had no replies.
I hooked up an Amiga computer to the same printer that I have faithfully
used with my 520ST. The cable that I used was the same cable and one
that I have also used with an IBM. I thought that the Amiga ports
were the same as the 520ST's ports when hooking up things like modems
and printers.
Upon hooking up the printer and powering everything up, I lost
both the printer and the Amiga. The Amiga won't boot anymore and
the NX 10 printer won't work with my 520ST anymore. I have tried
another cable. Now I have fried my printer by using this Amiga junk
with I thought could use regular printers. At least my 520ST still
works. Has anyone had any problems like what I experienced? I
really thought the Amiga had standard ports.
All I wanted to do was to compare WordPerfect Amiga with
WordPerfect Atari ST.

Subject: Atari CD-ROM?
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
Is anything happening these days with the Atari CD ROM?
Last I heard was that certain dealers (in Australia anyway) could
sell you one, but there isn't much software available.
What can you do with an Atari CD ROM?
I know it supports a number of international CD ROM formats, does anyone
have the details?
My specfic interest is getting the CD ROM version of the Oxford Dictionary
for my wife one of these days. (Sure don't have room for a paper copy)
I noticed with interest the release of the CDTV from Commodore.
I have seen magazine articles on computer games in development for the
CDTV, that sound very impressive.
Commodore seem to be pushing this multi-media hype stuff pretty hard,
if it catches on I could be persuaded to by a CDTV for the mega games
that will be available.
(I am not a one-eyed Atari supporter :-))
It seems to me that a STE with CD-ROM and the right software could
perform similar functions.
Atari had a chance to be a front runner in this field but they may have
missed the boat. (Sounds like a familiar story/whinge?)
Sorry for mentioning the dreaded C= :-).
The ST still has quite a few advantages for me (SM124 monitor, MIDI ports
and software). I will be hanging on to it anyway.

I wonder if anyone can point me to a source of a DVI driver for the ST/TT
driving a HP LaserJet III printer? I have tried a Deskjet Driver but this
does not work. Alternatively does anyone know where either the DVI file
specification or the source code of a generic (or LaserJet!) DVI driver
might be found? I can go via GHOSTSCRIPT but outputting TeX material is
contorted enough already without adding further stages!

Nope. It uses separate "screens" for program output and debugging
output. You can flip between them at will.
> 3. Is it a true source level debugger (or just a claim)?
Yup. My version gets a bit confused in some if/if/else situations
where I've left out some braces. eg.
if( var == var1 ) {
if( var2 ) {
statements
statements
}
else
statement
}
The compiler does not get similarly confused. This can be avoided
by including braces all the time.
I have found Laser DB to be invaluable. It has some problems with
programs which crash after allocating memory (and not deallocating
it) I think, but it might have been something else. It is fast and
easy to use.
They have re-written the OS-like routines that the debugger uses,
such as graphics, windows and mouse handling (so as not to interfere
with your program), and is therefore robust.

Well, PureC's debugger is able to be switched to VDI-mode. This means: If
you want it to, it uses VDI-calls, not it's own GEM-a-like calls.
I like Turbo C, and this was the one and only point I did not appreciate.

Hmm. For some reason I thought the number was PTC 1426, but oh well.
Anyway I'm not too happy with the atari mono monitor. Especially when
booting up the big white screen area is a little bit blurred.
Furhtermore after a while the line which is the border between the
screen background and the visible image (e.g. the desktop), is partly
black and partly the color of the image. The place where the transition
occurs moves during time. Atari told me this is normal. However
I'm not too happy about it. It doesn't look right.
Also I noted that the PTC is vulnerable to interference.
It seems that early versions had a metal casing inside the monitor, but
the new ones dont.
I rate the quality of the PTC monitor when used for monochrome less
than the old SM 125 monitor for my ST. Badly enough that one cannot
be used on the TT

I think you are wrong.
There are several places that specialize in euro imports (often for very
low prices, the euro game market is very fast paced and stuff goes into
the bargin bin after a few months). One such place is Sideline Software
here in FL. Stealing is stealing, period. If you do it, call yourself a
thief, nothing else.

I had the same problem. My TZ is set to -0500 so that my mail and news
software will generate dates that follow the most recent RFCs'
recommendations against using timezone abbreviations in headers.
Apparently ZOO 2.1 can't understand that format.
A more serious problem, though, is that I can't get ZOO 2.1 to extract
from an older ZOO archive using the x// or -restore commands. I get
bus errors every time. That made it sort of hard to get thelake back
on the air yesterday after a hard drive swap. This is distressing, since
I've always been in the pro-ZOO, anti-LHARC camp.
