Some users reported that the Atari Twist help them. This is similar to the
three inch drop, because you hold it about that high to do the twist,
but it seems much more gentle to me.
Grip the case firmly at each end. Twist the right hand toward
you and the Left hand away from you, flexing the case. Then
reverse the directions. If the chips have not popped out, this
flexing action might re-establish contact.

Is there an audio player that plays a series of

I have written one that loads and plays simultaneously. I'm not sure
what the transfer rate is from floppy, but from harddisk it works a charm.
The Rhythm Nation sound files are great in succession. I guess you'd only
have to transfer 10K per second or so - floppies are that fast aren't they?
Also, it gives you the option of not calling them .snd files, but renaming
them to .<100HZ> files where eg., bell.80 would play at 8KHz. Of course,
you can ask it to play them at any speed with command-line options.
I will uploaded it to atari.archive as soon as the Holy Trinity is fullfilled
(I'm at home, No-one is on the phone, and I remember). Before I do, get in
quick and tell me anything else that should be added, considering it is NOT
a GEM application (is there a need for one?)
Ciao,
Warwick.

Viola! I remembered - I've just uploaded it. Man page and all.
Called "mplay.arc" to avoid confusion with Dave's "play" program.
And yes, it does load and play well from floppies.
Enjoy,

Subject: digittal sample playback question
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
Hello ST community,
I wonder if anyone knows anything about how digitized sounds are played back
on an Atari ST. I have a digitizer for my IBM which produces a file of size
[4000 Bytes for each second of digitized sound]. I want to use these files
with my ST. Each byte corresponds to one of 256 different voltage levels
to be applied to an analog speaker. A large difference between two
consecutive bytes produces a loud 'click' and a small difference produces
a small click.
I tried playing a constant tone over the Atari's speaker and setting the
volume (0..15) 4000 times per second, but this has 1/16th the resolution
of my digitized sample and the replay quality is VERY poor.
I know that impressive digital replay is possible on the ST, any ideas
how?
Thank you,

Excuse my stupidity, but what are (and how do you use) .APP files?
That's all that Gemini comes as and it confuses me.
Also, Gemini is only supposed to work with TOS 1.02 or greater. I'm
really not sure what TOS version I have. I tried using TOSVERS.PRG and
it told me that I have TOS 1.0. It could be correct but I'm unsure.
I have a 520STfm which had an old single sided floppy built in.
Can anyone give me info?
Thanks.

APP files are basically the same thing as PRG files (you runthem the
same, etc). Look at your DESKTOP.INF file, and notice that the line
with *.PRG and the line with *.APP are virtually identical...
As for your TOS version, it probably is TOS 1.0. You could
either upgrade to 1.4 (recommended) or I believe use the VENUS
file instead of GEMINI (very similar, but I think with a couple
options missing)...

Subject: MiNT library patchlevel 10 now available
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
I've uploaded the source code and binaries for the patchlevel 10 of
the MiNT library to atari.archive, in the mint directory. There are
a *lot* of changes from patchlevel 8; most are cosmetic (removing
various compiler warnings) but there are some significant bug fixes
as well.
Most notable of the fixed bugs was one in open(); the old version was
passing the "mode" argument unchanged to Fopen. This was a *very* bad
thing to do; in fact, only the lower 2 bits (O_RDWR, etc.) should
be passed. It doesn't matter (much) in the current version of MiNT,
but it could cause very severe problems in future versions of MiNT.
I would strongly suggest that you recompile all your MiNT programs
with the newer library (or at least with a fixed open()) so that
the transition to MiNT 0.9 won't be quite as painful :-(.
Other changes include drastic changes to the include files to handle
prototypes more easily, and to improve portability to other compilers.
I've also incorporated many of the changes to the "standard" gcc
library that Jwahar Bammi has been maintaining (thanks, bammi!).

To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
First of all, I want to say thanks to those of you kind enough
to send replies to my Video Key inquiry. Your help is greatly
appreciated!
Anyway... Does anyone have any (reasonable) suggestions,
recommendations, tips, leads, etc. on a good multisynch
or other compatible monitor for a 1040STf? I am on a
budget, but I don't fancy the idea of two monitors in my
tiny, cluttered home computing area.
Are gray-scale multisynchs any good? What makes and models
offer the most reasonable compromises between quality and
price? Since I have an Apollo DN3500 at work (only B+W, but
great resolution), I'm not necessarily confined to color, but
would like to have all three resolutions available to me.
(But I'd like to have colors... I just would like to be able
to retain ownership of my major limbs and organs :)
If this info has been posted in the past, or in FAQ, please
forgive me. I'm still really new to the net, and until
later next month, don't have ftp access to the archives.
If you'd like, you can reply directly to my e-mail address,
or to the net if it's worthwhile.
Thanks a whole helluva lot in advance!

Or, if they aren't socketted, then you've probably got a dry joint that has
come loose. I guess a good eye and a soldering iron would be the tools then.
I doubt it has anything to do with the power supply. If you've got bombs, then
some OS is alive (they aren't hardware sprites :-]/:-[).
