Re~2: Smalltalk ??
ST hard/soft emulator for IBM
Still trying to get Omti MFM, ICD interface and Seagate 4038 working
Term program which supports zmodem

Subject: 2 SPECTRE QUESTIONS: PARKING A HD AND MEG-A-MINUTE
1. Is there some way to park an MFM hard disk in an ICD setup from
Spectre mode? or do I have to reboot my system and then use my park
program in GEM (as I've been doing)? For that matter, is it really
necessary to park the hard disk from Spectre mode? (I'm using v 1.9 to
maintain compatibility with Translator1, but I do have v2.65...I don't
know if this would make a difference.)
2. I see in the Spectre manual that meg-a-minute was published through
Start. Is there anyway to get this program now? i.e. do I have to
purchase it from Start (if that is possible), or is it shareware? pd?
posted somewhere?
Thanks very much in advance. You can email to me directly, or post to
the net.

I would also like information on the main features of the various compilers.
The Mark Williams 'C' has a unix style interface. What about Laser 'C'?
What other 'C' compilers are there?
Any help would be appreciated.

we are running the new (paranoid) in.ftpd that tries to
inverse map your hostname, to make sure that you are calling in from a
valid host. another "feature" of this version of ftpd is that it
does'nt run the usual "ls", and thats why "dir" or "ls -<anything>"
does'nt work. straight "ls" works. our sysop is looking into the
problem. in the mean while you may use
picasso.ces.cwru.edu or sandy.ces.cwru.edu
they still run the old in.ftpd (and yes, they have the motd).

Ok, I have a question.
Maybe I am getting senile, but how do you read the name of the current
program in let's say GfA Basic or Assembler?
I looked around the basepage and stuff, I even scanned the whole memory
for the name but it was nowhere to be found.
Am I being stupid or is it really hard to find?

Hi Stefan, fine to meet to you on the net. No, you're not senile, it
is really a problem. If you're being started from DESKTOP or GEMINI
via shel_write, you'll get your own name via shel_read(). (Hope I
didn't mix up some names.) If your program has been called via Pexec
without shel_writing the name before, you're out of luck - except
if the calling program uses Xarg. Julian, can you help out? I didn't
implement Xarg yet.
This means that AUTO folder programs can't get to their names legally
because they are being started via Pexec during the start-up process,
and since GEM hasn't been initialized in the AUTO folder, the BIOS
reset routine can't shel_write the name before, and your program
can't shel_read the name. Moreover, the BIOS AUTO folder routine
doesn't use those Xarg tricks yet.

Subject: Handbook for Internet users including FTP and Mail services
Now that many of the students who use INFO-ATARI16 are gone for the
summer things have quieted down. It might be a good time to come up with a
handbook that can be distributed by Internet mail to people who ask questions
like:
1)> What is FTP
2)> How do I deal with .zoo files?
3)> Where do I find TeX material?
4)> Where are the FTP sites?
5)> Why am I on the Internet anyway?
Steve Grimm's postings for the UUCP side of things are a wonderful help,
but it would be nice to have something comparable that could be sent out to
people who are trying to use the Internet facilities.
I will be glad to try to coordinate a project for writing such a handbook
if people will send me material and suggestions.
The design goals that I se right now are to get a document that can be
e-mailed to anyone who posts a message that indicates that they are unsure of
what they are doing. The document should be short enough to pass through
most mailers.
If such a document were available it might help novices make good use of
the facilities without having to take up capture buffer space with questions
that get asked over an over again. The contnet of the INFO-ATARI16 digests
might be improved thereby.
Suggestions, comments, and submission should be sent to
JOHNBARNES@ENH.NIST.GOV.
Thank You
John Barnes

Hello from Singapore,
Do you really want to own 2 Syquest Removable Hard disks?
I am now using the Megafile 44 (one Syquest) I think that it is already more
than I can handle. I have 4 cartridges one each for SperCharger (MsDos format),
Atari format, Spectre format and Macintosh format. When I want to connect it to
Macintosh I just disconnect the Syquest from the Atari Host adapter card and
connect the drive with home made cable as explained in the Spectre Manual.
I also have ICD card. with ICD host adapter card you can make a cable with the
50 pin sockets to connect Syquest and ICD card and have one end of the ribbon
extended to connect to DB25 Pin for connection to Mac SCSI port. When you want
to use the Drive with Mac, Just unplug or switchoff the 5V supply to the ICD
card. I use CMS HD util version 5.2.2 to format in Mac mode. The mac cartridge
can also read and write under Spectre. I mentioned one Syquest is more than
enough for me because after 3 months with Megafile 44 I have lost several parti
tions of my cartridges. I will definitely install 2nd Hard disk inside the Mega
file 44 and use Syquest only for backing up. If you think of backing up a cart-
ridge with another one, I came across discussion in INFO-APPLEII mentioned
about a program (for Apple IIgs) which can perform cartridge to cartridge copy
with one Syquest drive. However I have not yet come across such a program for
Atari.
My problem now is to disable SCSI parity on my Conner CP3200F, 200MB drive so
I can install it in the Magafile 44 box.
If you want to know more about my experience with Syquest 44 you can e-mail me.
There are more detail which wont be of much interest to other netter that I can
tell you.
Hope this help,

Well,
I am some normal-average user, who doesn't know very much about
programming the st and internal codes...
But I gotta d something to Claus Brods mail: I support these kind of
guys, who spend their time and invest a lot of work to patch some errors
of all the original atari programms - where would I bee without them?
As far as I can see, Atari really invest their main programmer-power in
developping the TT, means, there are all the problems with the TOS 1.4
bugs and so on and on and on...
So, I, as buyer of SM124, Mega2, megafile 30 (other words: all original
atari products) and maybe more hardware in future count on these guys,
who improve and patch all the original code. And even if you have to
admit, you're not the best, if a user from germany sends you correction
and improvments of your programm, it would be a great achievement, if
you were prepeared for coorperation, if you worked together with them.
Why not? In the end, it's more success for you and the company, if you
allow spreading some patched versions of your programms and if you check
them out and support them, then it would be if you prohibit them and
don't get some reliable versions out...
Well, I hope you got some of my thoughts and messages, although my
english needs a drasticall improvement...more than TOS needs...
greetings

I think you mean the VME ST boards made by proVME in Germany. These are
complete STs on a VME board and plug into a VME bus which is probably
available for PCs. As far as I know these STs use their own video shifter
and have a separate video output to connect an SM124. I think the VME STs
were mainly made for engineering purposes in complete VME systems.
No warranty for this information, as I didn't follow the development very
closely. Can somebody help?

Message-ID: <1990May6.121900.17507@cs.wayne.edu>
I purchased a 30M hard drive a while ago, and it formats fine, partitions
fine, but when using ICD's hdutil.prg, the program reports that it cannot
find a partion that can support autobooting. I set up all the partitions
as GEM partitions. When I called ICD, they said (1) change all the
partitions to XXX, then repartion, them back to GEM, and repartion, as the
partition info may not be getting written. Nope. Didnt work. (2) dload
hdutil from their bbs, as the copy I have may be corrupted (I just received
the new ICD disk a week prior). Still no success. Each time I set up
to put autobooting on the hard drive, it cannot recognize any partion.
The ICD HD ACC recognizes all of the Hard Drive Partions, as does the
icdfmt utility. It's hdutil that's giving me problems.
Is there anyone out there who's had any success getting hdutil (ver 3.51
i believe) working with a Seagate 4038, or any SCSI drive?

Just wanted all of you to know that on terminator.cc.umich.edu
in atari/telecomm is a file called stterm.arc
For those of you who got it personally from me, this is the same
file.
For those of you who arelooking for a decent ST program which supports
zmodem, this is it! I am very happy with it, even though it is
a .tos program (as opposed to gem), and have been using it for
the last 3 years (and still have no desire to change).
And to anyone who is wondering - it was written by Matt Singer of
Comnet systems, same people who put out forem-st, and I got permission
from the author to distribute it.

An enquiry was recently posted concerning the Deskjet+ and spectre, I have a
few cooments/questions on the matter. I have a DJ+ and am considering spectre
so here goes.
i) Certainly the DJ+ is nearer to Laser than it is to 24 pin, its faster,
better quality and you dont have problems with 180/180, 360/180, 360/360 dpi
choices, It is a great value printer unless you intend your work to be read
under water.
ii) As quickdraw scales the screen fonts to the printer you are probably
going to do better scaling them from 72 to 300dpi (4 ish times) than you
are from 72 to 180 dpi (2.5) though 5x at 360 is a good but SLOW bet.
Questions:
HP has released the deskwriter for the Mac, does this use the same codes as
the DJ+, i.e. will a deskwriter driver run the DJ+.
Is there anyone out there running spectre with a DJ+ (or even a real mac).
Finally and almost unrelated, are there any good Mac PD sites I can get to
by mail as I cannot FTP except within the U.K. (I know about Lancaster).
Keep up the good work Dave......
