There has been a lot of traffic in comp.sys.atari.st lately about TeX
on the Atari ST.
If you are using TeX, LaTeX, Metafont or any of the 'added-value'
stuff like Bibtex or Tib please email me the following information
1. software... what, where you got it (how), PD, shareware, cost etc.
TeX
LateX
metafont
font files (pk, mf, whatever)
tfm's
previewers (and their fonts)
printer drivers
comments (bugs, koodoos)
2. hardware....
1040, Mega[2,4], amount of memory (if nonstandard)
printer used (and any pertinent details-trials in getting it
to work)
comments (bugs, koodoos)
****** I will summarize and post to the net. ******

Subject: Becoming an Official Atari Developer!

The following are notes about becoming an Official Atari ST Developer in
the United States. I would be interested in hearing from our friends in
Europe about the rules for becoming a developer there. But now on with the
show!!
I called Gail Johnson in early January 1990 to inquire about becoming an
Official
Atari ST/TT Developer. I was sent a large envlope withing a week. The envelope
contained a description of the current plan which is a single level plan costing
$250.00. The Developer MUST be developing a COMMERICAL product for the ST. The
Developer MUST submit 3 copies of said product to Atari Corp. the Developer MUST
re-register annually. The packet I received said a LOT about what the Developer
must do, but very little about what the Developer receives for his $250.00.
Basically, all the Developer gets for his $250.00 is some mailing lists from
Atari Corp. And the option of having his products (demos thereof) being
distributed
by Atari Corp to all Atari dealers.
The packet did NOT contain any information about what sort of Developer
software,
or Developer Documentation would be provided by Atari Corp.
So, I called Gail Johnson to ask about all this. I was told that Atari had
multiple
levels of Developers, one of which included the Mark Williams C compiler and
cost
$250.00. Another level, which did not include the MWC C compiler was $100.00. As
I currently own, and use, MWC I wanted to sign up for the $100.00 Developer
Program.
Gail Johnson informed me that such a program was dropped as of December 31,
1989.
So, as of Jan 1 1990 there is only one Developer Program which costs $250.00.
And it doesn't even include the MWC C compiler. It contains the OLD OLD Alycon
C compiler, which I have heard is VERY VERY bad.
so, my question is Why Did Atari change their Developer programs to eliminate
the
lower cost option??
Why did Atari Corp drop the MWC C compiler and start shipping the Alycon
compiler??
I had really palnned to sign up as a Developer but now I am having serious
doubts. I
don't want the Alycon compiler, and I don't like the $250.00 price tag. I do
some part
time C programming at home, and don't plan to market a commerical product. So,
where
does that leave me?? Out in the cold I believe.
I wish that Atari Corp would try to help their customers more, and this new
DEvelopers
program is not a good way to start a new decade.

It sounds like you are setting your codes in the middle of your dicument.
There are a few basic rules you have to remember when using WordPerfect:
-Everything is done in codes. When you set your tabs, it inserts a code
sequence into your document. This code is treated as a single character.
Use Reveal Codes to display the text and codes in a document.
-The codes only affect the text which comes *after* the code and before
another occurance of the same code.
-Some codes have an explicit start and end. Bold, for instance, will start
with a big B ([B] in reveal codes) and end with a little b ([b] in reveal
codes). These codes are inseperable and if one is deleted, the other will
be removed. The only way to restore these types of codes is by using the
block feature to highlight the text and press the appropriate code.
As far as indenting goes, try following these guidelines: Use tabs up to the
tab stop just previos to where you want to start indenting then use a tab to
indent the first line of the paragraph. It should look soething like this:
(using tabs stops every three characters)
This is a test. Ignore it and it will go away. My name is Luca, I
live on the second floor. The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy
whaterer and they all ived happily ever after.
In reveal codes, it would look like:
[TAB][INDENT][TAB]This is a test. Ignore it and it will go away. My name is L
ca, I[Srt]live on the second floor........
By the way, don't try to use margin release until you have a VERY good hang
of how WP works. It can really screw with your mind. By the way, NEVER use
spaces to line things up in WP. It will always screw things up. I'm sorry
if this is a bit too basic, but better safe than confused. I just completed
another 35 page document last night in WP and it seems that I learn something
new to do with it every time. It's a slick program, you just have to learn
it language. But it is a VERY powerful language.
BTW, make sure your tab stops start AFTER your left margin, usually ten. If
your tab stops are 5, your first stop should be at 15.

If you get MetaFont running, you can create all the fonts you want. Of
course, you should have a good deal of spare time before you try this.
The NeXT machines are shipped with a program called afmtotfm, which
converts Adobe Font Metric files to TeX Font metric files. I don't remember
if the source code is shipped as well, but that at least tells you that
it's a doable thing.
TeX is by far the most versatile text processing system that exists; it
can certainly handle things better than troff can. And, by switching to
TeX/DVI output, you get the advantage of the device-independent output
file format. Since you're using postscript already, that's probably not a
big issue, but if you need to support any other types of printers DVI is
a wonderful thing to be able to take advantage of. I've got a program
(based on code from Imagen written 15 or so years ago) that I've been
hacking on that takes troff CAT output and converts to DVI, just 'cause
it's so handy at times...

the tfm's from Personal Tex Inc. They list a lot of Adobe fonts
for TeX on the PC.

With TeX I can format and preview files at home on my ST (its
been ported to just about everything but the Sinclair!) and
print 'em at work!

Neat! There is also a troff2tex program in comp.sourcces.unix
that works amazingly well (even equations).
A friend was just finishing a large book (math. physics like)
in troff. When he saw what I could do with TeX he called
his publisher and was told that they could take TeX files
directly, speed up the process and would really appreciate it!
He switched! We found the translator (troff2tex) and he was back
on schedule in a few weeks.

I want to thank Michtron (and Ann@Michtron) for their prompt upgrade
to my copy of WERCS. I sent in a floppy on Wednesday Jan 31 and received my
upgrade on Sat Feb 10. Ann told me that Michtron shipped it on Tuesday Feb 6.
So, it is nice to see a company respond so quickly to a customer. BTW, the
upgrade was FREE, with just a nominal $5 charge for shipping and handling.
Very fair for a package like WERCS.
Also, could someone in England tell which is the latest version of WERCS
over there?? Michtron has Version 1.16, which is what I received. Is there
a newer versio of WERCS in England?? If so, how can I get it?? I have the latest
version that Michtron has.
Thanks for a great product.
