There are several PD utilities that do this, none of which seem very robust
(ie they make everything crash!). One commercial product that I know of,
Omnires (sold through E. A. Brown Co. for about $35) also does it, and it
seems to be more forgiving. It also give the ability to emulate a color on
a mono (with grey scales, of course). Several different methods for both
types of emulations are included, you are instructed to pick the one you
like the best (dithering, etc). I would recommend that you get a real mono,
as they are cheap (hell, you might be able to get a used one for $60) and
they look sooo good (70Hz is hard to beat, best monochrome screen I have seen).

In fact, there
- IS a GEM clipboard. What do You think is the purpose of scrp_read() and
scrp_write(). Here in Germany, SOME programs 'already' use it!
- ARE standard file formats. Think of GEM, IMG, CSV, TXT, DIF...

Message-ID: <90Feb21.110418est.57412@ugw.utcs.utoronto.ca>
I'd like to be able to use Gulam with a Dvorak-remapped keyboard, but it
doesn't coexist with the current Dvorak remapper I'm using. Apparently
Gulam uses its own internal keyboard translation table, and there is a
small program that remaps the internal table.
The Gulam keyboard remapper must be specific to the version og Gulam or it
will remap the wrong area.
The remap program doesn't seem to be in the UOGuelph or Panarthea archives.
Would some kind soul send me the remapper and the corresponding version
of Gulam, in UUE format?
Thanks.
Peter

The STEVIE editor, a vi clone, lacks insert-mode editing commands to
delete-line-left and delete-word-left, i.e., the "werase" and "kill"
characters in Unix parlance.
Before I wade into the code to add them, I thought I'd ask you all
whether you've already done this and would like to make the patches
available...

Does anyone have or know how to get schematics for
the Atari-520ST? My friend has one, and it doesn't
even want to start up now. He got the run-around
from various repair people so I'd like to give it
a shot. Any suggestions, or comments on common
failure modes ?
Please E-Mail replys, and I will summarize if there
is sufficient interest.

AAron nAAs asked:
>Anyone in Europe or Canada have programs that will take
>advantage of the STe's new features?
Bob Brodie from Atari US showed us a 4 Meg STE this weekend, and showed two
programs for it...
One was a "bouncing ball" demo from Australia, with not so great graphics
(it was designed for a 50hz PAL system, so they might have been great, but
we didn't get to see them that way), and some really great sound by way of th
PCM digital sound output of the STE.... (AXEL-F from Beverly Hills Cop in
stereo...!)
The other was a game written by Atari's game division in Chicago... it was
a "River Raid" kind of thing called "Whitewater... (Something or Other)"
and came on two disks.. the first disk booted, started up the music and then
rather imperiously demanded, in a digitized voice, "DISK B... DISK B..."
While Bob declared, rather frankly, "I wouldn't buy this game," several peopl
who had a chance to play it at the MACE user group meeting said it wasn't bad
in fact, there were several requests for copies. (Unfortunately it won't run
on anything other than an STE...)
When asked, Bob said Atari has no current plans to market the game. Someone
at the meeting did mention another commercial release of a game for the STE,
whose title escapes me though, at 3AM....
>P.S. My STe is Serial number 310, bought in Canada, and label
> says that its a US machine!!
Bob told us that what happened to the US STE was that it failed its FCC type
acceptance tests. While they redesigned the internal shielding, they shipped
the already assembled units to Canada for sale there... thus the "U.S."
label on the unit purchased in Canada....

This is undoubtedly part of the answer.
The explanation I have heard from people who study the
personal computer market (and this is the one that makes the most
sense to me) is pretty simple: Europeans have less disposable income
than Americans. Period. If the European user wants to buy a PC, he
cannot afford the cost of an IBM or Mac. (And if you think they are
ridiculously priced *here*...try going to Europe sometime and
pricing a Mac...if you can find one.) So they buy the lesser priced
Atari's and Amigas.
Now, if that is the reason, we may see all of this change as Europe
becomes an even larger financial center in the 90's. (Reunification
of Germany, Europe common market, etc.) There may be more
disposable income to go around...

I assume, based on KBad's comments that Alan Page is a poor programmer too,
or possibly I didn't sprinkle enough dried chicken blood around my ST, as
I've had the "Phantom Typist" hit me while using FLASH as a text editor...
Seems odd that someone who's been so involved with the ST has never heard of
this "feature" that's existed as long as the ST has been available...

You should certainly use foldr100. Poolfix3 only fixes a bug in
the code which manages GEMDOS's internal memory. You can still
run OUT of memory there, and FOLDR100.PRG adds more. A program
which uses Malloc() a lot, or has lots of open files at the same
time, can use up all this memory.
If you see the "panic" message, it's USUALLY because you ran
out of pool memory. Using poolfix3 will not change this.
Using FOLDR100 will.
Poolfix3 should print a message when it runs; that message either says
it was INSTALLED or says there was some error. The most common error
is that it can't find GEMDOS: if some program has run earlier in the
AUTO folder and swiped the GEMDOS trap, that'll do it. (Other messages
include detecting that your GEMDOS doesn't need poolfix at all, and
that your GEMDOS *does* need poolfix, but it can't be installed for
some reason. That one should "never happen.")
