Subject: .IMG/Pagestream/Postscript
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

Hi.

I have yet to purchase the software, but I know I am going
to be using .IMG files (of which I know little or nothing about),
AND am going to NEED to print these .IMG in a Postscript DTP
environment...hence Pagestream comes to mind. I have been holding
off buying 1.82 due to the purported soon release of 2.x.
I will have a TRUE PS printer shortly- the NEC Silent Writer 90.

My question: Am I in for trouble in placing .IMG files into
a Postscript format? Should I expect loss or degradation in the
conversion? is there a conversion? and, what .IMG editing tools
are out there? TOUCH_UP ? others? Are .IMG typically large?
And if converted to PS.. can I assume that were I to go to a
printhouse for greater than 300dpi, i will be able to get the
higher resolution for the graphics images?

your help is very much appreciated.
thanks

I do .img imports into Pagestream all the time.

> Should I expect loss or degradation in the conversion?

.img files are simply compressed bit images. So, to whatever degree
PageStream distorts bitimages upon resizing is your only true worry.
Bit for bit reproductions should be error free.

>Are .IMG typically large?

Depends. Some of my clip-art type scans with the geniscanner produce
.img files that are 1/6th the storage of a raw bitmap.

>And if converted to PS.. can I assume that were I to go to a

I don't know.

Subject: Connecting the Atari ST to it's 8-bit counterparts
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

Hello:

I have heard that you could connect the Atari ST to the Atari 8-bits, and
then store the 8-bit software on the 3.5'' disks that the ST uses.

I was wondering what all was involved in this process. I know that you
need the "Null Modem" cable, and that the 8-bit will need some sort of
interface, probably the 850... after that, could you just use terminal
software for each computer, and then "download" from the 8-bit to the ST??

Now... I have an Atari SX212 that has both the RS232 port for the ST and
the port that the 8-bit uses. Would it be possible to just use the modem
as a link between the two?? Could I do so without the Null Modem, and
just use my RS232???

ALSO: I have heard that the ST can RUN about 90% of the 8-bit software if
you have another hardware module... anyone else heard this??

Thanks for any replies!!

I've just installed formdoit 1.1 on my ST and I love it ! Very nice little
program which makes using GEM much quicker. Now for a couple of queries ..

1. Why do most dialogues come up with the button letters underlined and some
don't ? eg: Show info on a disk drive within Neodesk 3.0 doesn't give any
ALT-key combinations.

2. I have a dialogue box within a program that I have written which I want to
have an '!' icon on. I don't really want to have to draw one by hand so
does anyone know how I can import the icons supplied with formdoit 1.1 into
my RSC file ? I use the laser C RSC editor but also have nrsc/k-resource
if necessary. I could'nt find any way of converting the degas .bl3 files
into the required format.

Advthanks,

Could any kind soul send me detailed description (or even better
a source code) of GIF,PCX,TIFF,IMG picture-formats and their creation.
I need to do GIF,PCX,TIFF <-> IMG conversion for a friend who will
very soon have to receive/store/retrive/"reformat"/send pictures in
all those formats. I'v choosen IMG format as a base since it seems to
be most widespread and easiest to manage but if GIF proves to be much
more space efficient then it might became the base. The key point is
that the whole proces will have to be done authomatically. Just to
make things worse ih has to be done while user (my friend) is on-line
and needs certain picture in a certain format and there is nobody home
to do it (except his ST, of course :-). So, there is no chance that any
paint program could be used for conversion and I'm very short with time
and information (yes I have GIF.DOC but have no time to reinvent the
wheel, although I usually like to do that :-).

If you have a copy of VKILLER, version 3.0 or later, just do a KILL
on the disk. The resulting bootsector, with all non-critical data
zeroed, will also have the necessary values to be readable on any
MS-DOS system.

Question: will Pagestream allow me to place text on a .IMG

can one place individual characters of text on top of a .IMG

Hmmm..... Rufus (I'm using it now) seems to NOT update the screen (I

Also, it doesn't let me mark text in GNU-Emacs (Control-Space) Is

All I ever had was a comprehensive article in, I believe, ST Log. It
listed the usual dos and don'ts, and even the prefered menu contents

You may see the ever-popular Uniterm mentioned as a possible program. You
would not have to sell your color monitor. Uniterm supports med and hi rez.
It's also very fast, full-featured for main-frame and *nix systems, runs
external programs (I run XYZ.TTP) with a mouse click for Zmodem), very
powerfull script language and ability to use GDOS fonts. Full GEM,
and reliable code (not one crash in three years of use). Lastly, it's
in english, comes with extensive documentation, and is free. Current
version is 2.0e. I love to use it with vi (if I have to) where I can click
on the screen and the cursor goes there for editing.
