Whoops! You are correct that ProRebel is a hacked ACopy, but it is also an
illegal product. The one which I was describing is called ProGem, and is also
an illegal product. Both have their origins within the Pirate subculture.
They are both quite similar: They combine different versions of the same
copy program under a common front end. They both allow one to create a file
containing both the data and copy protection info from a disk. These files
are then arced or lzhed and uploaded to boards.
Sorry about the errata. I do not question your use of the program, I just
wanted to make sure you knew where it originated.
Incidentally, the reason that several versions of the same copy program are
desired is kind of weird (at least unique to the ST, to my knowledge).
Basically, if you have version 1.1 of some copy program, it can copy some
set X of programs. If you get 1.2, it can copy some set Y of programs.
However, even though 1.2 is newer, it is not generally true that X is
contained within Y. That is, the older one will copy some stuff that the
newer one cannot?!? Strange, as you would think that the newer versions
would only add capability . . .

I am in the process of getting either an Atari 8-bit, an Atari ST, or an Apple
// system to run my BBS on. I have decided to go this route rather than
upgrading for it is much cheaper. However, I do realize the consequences of
going with these older out dated computer systems. Can someone tell me which
is the best BBS program for each one of these computer systems, and which setup
(hardware wise) would be best to use. I would appreciate it very much. I
pretty much know on most of the setups what is required, but would like to know
more and would also like some Sysops opinions on the different BBS packages if

Hello,
Does anyone on the net know of a utility which would allow me to
convert a bunch of GEM (*.FED) fonts to GDOS format? I use Uniterm V2.0e 011
and it seems that it's font converter (MAKE_UFT.TTP) accepts only GDOS fonts.
Please reply by e-mail or followup (I read this group almost every day!)

something was very similar to SQL and was relatively cheap, could anyone

Subject: help with TT/GDOS/TTM195 setup

For about 2 months, I have been using the following assign.sys file with
my TT and a PTC1426 colour monitor. When I switched to a TTM195 mono
monitor, I could no longer boot my system with GDOS (a screen message
would say that GDOS 1.1 was resident but 2 bombs would appear during the
desk accessory loading step). I tried rewritting the assign.sys file
dozens of ways (see the example at the end of this posting) but the
system still crashes. What the heck do I have to have in my assign.sys
file to get GDOS to load properly?
For netland information, YES, all the drivers and fonts ARE in the path
specified by the path statement! The fonts (except metafonts) and
drivers are from my Timeworks DTP software. The metafonts are from my
LDW software. Crashes occur even when I strip all AUTO programs out
except GDOS and when all accessories are inactivated. Crashes occur
whether or not NEOLOAD is run from the AUTO folder.
If I do run NEOLOAD, when the system crashes I get the following
diagnostic page:

The last release of the Jam Packer was V3.0 pre-release. This may sound
contradictory, but V3 is such an improvement over V2 (even with a few
bugs and no docs) that we had to release it.
There should be a new version along in a few months, but we both have very
little free time at the moment.
To speed the release of the "real" V3.0 we would greatly appreciate
receiving any bug reports on V3.0 pre-release. Particularly, what
programs it doesn't work with, and how it fails. Indication of problems
with the interface would also be appreciated.

I uploaded some dvi printer drivers for 24-pin printers. I had a hard time
finding these, and finally found the drivers in Germany, so I thought I'd put
them on atari.archive. The directions are in German, and I can't read German,
but I got it to work by just unlzhing all the font files it creates in the
directories it created. You need to unlzh it with an unlzh'r that knows about
directories. I never figured out what the install program does. The files
are:
24pin1.lzh
24pin2.lzh
and should be in atari/newitems on atari.archive.umich.edu
Now, a couple questions. About a month ago, someone mentioned a screen
saver/mouse doubler from the makers of hotwire called hotsomething and said
that they uploaded it to atari.archive, but I haven't seen it show up.
Also, superboot 6.0 was posted, along with the sbsounds file, but the
utilies archive file mentioned in the documentation hasn't shown up at
atari.archive. Does anyone know about either of these, and if so, could you
upload them to atari.archive?

Welcome to this very first issue of Portable Addiction. This issue is just a
test issue, so if you find this newsletter interesting, please send us a
message.
This is a monthly newsletter for both Portfolio and Lynx users. We will try to
cover all the new software that is beeing released for both machines, but we are
also planning to do tips, previews, news and a letter page. to test all newly
released software for the Lynx, we have made a nice little deal with the
local Fun Tronics store. They are now officially supporting us. On the
Portfolio front we have a PC expert. He calls most BBS' every day, so
if new Portfolio software is released, you'll be the first one to know.

ALL THE LATEST NEWS...(AND GOSSIP)

The NEC TurboExpress will not be released in Europe. This is done because
the Lynx is far more popular over here, and because the PC Engine never
made it to Europe! This means that here, in Europe, NEC is out of the race
and the Lynx has won again!!! Hurrah!!!!
More and more shop's are selling the Lynx in Holland, the shop's that are
selling the Game Boy are now selling the Lynx along with it.It will not be
long untill the Lynx will have won definately (The price has already dropped
from HLF 500 to HLF 300, the Lynx II will be HLF 200)
A Portfolio II is in production. The only thing we know about it is that it
will be an improved version of the old model. More info when we have it.
Release dates for the Lynx II have yet to be set(for Europe), but we expect
to see it in England this Christmas, and early 1992 in the rest of Europe.
In the US it has already been released, at $99,-.

RoboSquash - LYNX Review - OUT NOW

Remember PONG? No? Well, think back, about ten years back. Pong, a game where
you slide your bat to the left and to the right to catch a bal, which then
bounces away the blocks above.
RoboSquash is exactly the same, except for some gameplay enhancements, and
the addition of an extra demention. In other words, RoboSquash is 3-D Pong
with power-ups. You can play against the computer, or challenge a friend.
The latter is the only thing that makes RoboSquash reach the AVERAGE accolade.
And this is indeed a very average game, almost below average.
PONG was great when it was released.... in the beginning of the '80s! But
please, leave these games in the decade where they were born! Get real!
it's 1991 and an improved version of Pong is just not enough to keep today's
gameplayers happy!
Graphics _6 : Simple but functional
Sound _3 : Sound hasn't improved much since Pong!!!
Playability _7 : Quite playable at first
Lastability _4 : After a few goes inerest starts to wane
Overall _5 : A pathetic attempt at resurrecting an
ancient game
Blue Lightning - LYNX review - OUT FOR A LONG TIME
--------------------------------------------------
Blue Lightning is out since the beginning of the Lynx, it's a good flight-
simulator and demonstrates the great scaling features of the Lynx.
The game play is good (very fast play), but it does not really stand out from
the other flight simulators. There are nine missions, each with a different goal
like attacking radar bases, nightflights and dogflights.
There is no music, but who wants to hear music, you're supposed to be flying
an airplane, the only sound you hear are those of the plane and your gun.
Overall it's quite nice (graphics are stunning), but it's adviced to buy it
at a reduced price, unless you really want it.
Graphics _8 : Beautyfull, detailled and fast
Sound _6 : No music but it does not bore
Playability _7 : Game play is very good/fast
Lastability _7 : Missions are just right (not to easy and
not so hard so you give up
Overall _7 : Great, one of the nicest simulators I've
ever seen

Chip's Challenge
The code for level 144 is GVXQ. also worth a try if you are a maths freak,
is the code MAND. This will enter the hidden Mandelbrot explorer.
A tip on using it: all buttons have a function!
Xenophobe
The Poofer gun is the most powerfull. it may have a very short range,but if
you want to survive till the very last level, give it a try!
Zarlor Mercenary - a players guide:
At the start of the first level you'll find a laser, an auto fire and speed.
To destroy the most aliens you must put the palm of your hand on the lowest A-
button and press the B-button with your thumb, so you shoot your cannons and
laser at the same time (autofire is needed).
End of level guardians:
The first and second guardians are easy, just keep moving to avoid the bullets
(and lasers on, level 2) and don't stop shooting.
On level 3 there are 3 end of level guardians, just keep flying above the
center, so you can't be hit by the lasers, you'll be hit by all the mines and
bullets but if you use mega bombs you'll make it through.
On level 4 you must shoot all the balls first (watch out, when they explode
they will shoot one bomb at you) after you've done that you must shoot the
big ball in the center, there will be about ten ships coming out of it (mega-
bomb is adviced). Level 5 is not special, just shoot it and watch out for the
alien ships that fly around. Use all your megabombs on the last end of level
monster, when it still lives use your laser, so you can hit it any time you
like.
Shopping:
Buy whatever you need, if you have money left, use it to buy extra things on
the first 3 levels. Sell every thing you don't need after level 5, that's
where you make the most profit.
My high-score is 3,56 million Zarbits (Supreme Mercenary).
PORTFOLIO
---------
This month only a small section, but we will have large reviews next month.
A hot item to look out for is the harddisk for the portfolio. This 20 MB
harddisk is about 1cm high and easily clicks under the portfolio itself.
this makes the portfolio about 2cm high, but it doesn't make it any bigger.
The only problem with this item is the fact that it runs on batteries.
the harddisk does make the storage capacity of the portfolio quite large,and
therefore makes it more like a PC.
If you just love small machinery, you'll love this harddisk, but we doubt it
very much if normal people will really find this thing worth the bucks.
Here's some hot news for programming freaks!!! A basic has just been released
for the portfolio. PBasic, as it's called, is saved in compressed, downloadable
form on CIS and GEnie, in a file called PBas1.zip. You'll need the archiving
tool called zip to unzip the file first. To order PBasic 3.0 on RAM card
(if you don't have access to a PC), send a RAM card of 64K or bigger size,
and a self-addressed stamped mailer for return posting to the following address:

PBasic is compatible with Quickbasic, so that means that you can now program
while on the run!!! Mega great!!! There are also some extra portfolio-only
commands!! Just wait one month and you'll hear all about it!!
P.S. There is also a Basic in production made by Atari self (this will not be
a public domain basic!).

Hi John,
The only project management software for the Atari ST's that
I know of (granted there could be more!) is a program called Critical Path.
Although the name of the publisher escapes me right at the moment; you should
able to get through either a local Atari dealer or mail order. Bye.......

Subject: Spectre customized keyboard maps

Hi there!
I have a major problem with Spectre:
I made a customized keyboard map for finnish keyboard, named
it DEFAULT.KEY and saved it to the same level with SPECTRE.PRG.
There is a copy of it at the ETC-folder also. All this is located
to my D: harddisk in a folder named SPECTRE. I launch my Spectre
from a SPECTRE.PRG icon located at the NeoDesk desktop.
First time I started with this keyboard map, the keyboard in
Mac-mode was all mixed up. The "Keyboard" -accessory does not
show the numeric keypad, it shows the old Mac Plus keyboard
with no keypad instead. The bottom line having Z, X, C,... etc.
has shifted to the left by one key, so if I press N, I got B etc.
And there is no space bar and almost all special keys, including
the space bar, act like RETURN.
The keyboard was ok (until I made this .KEY),
except </> and '/* keys were switched (the " ' " and " * " came
from lower left corner and " < " came from left to the Backspace),
so I tried to fix this, because I use these keys a lot.
After I made this .KEY file, it went mixed.
I also removed all files affecting to the keyboard layout from
my Mac system folder, and zeroed the settings for keyboard.
I tried to restore the situation before this, but no success.
No matter what I do, the keyboard stays mixed up.
So, please give me instructions how this .KEY file becomes activated,
what are the required operations/files/paths in ST-mode, and what
are the required settings/files in Mac mode.
The keyboard my ST has is the Swedish keyboard (it is the official
one in Finland too).

Steve Whitney replied to my request for assign.sys information for the TT.
Thanks Steve, but I already tried what you suggested (as per Ron Grant's
original posting) and it did not work.
re: daisy chaining drives on the DMA, I had the same problem so I called
my ICD supplier. You have to ensure that you remove the parity jumper on
the drive that is to be daisy chained (I do not know where this is on a
Supra drive). Once the jumper is removed, the install devices function
should automatically put up icons for the second drive. Call Supra if
you have any problems.
BTW, the 19" Atari TTM195 monitor is SUPERB. SO much so that when I sat down
in front of an SM124 monitor again my first reaction was I was looking at
a med res colour monitor not a high res ST monitor. Believe me, the TTM195 is
GREAT.

Yesterday, after having loaded a new disk, my son lost the control of his
Atari 512 STe . We cannot input anything from the keyboard or the mouse.
Disk drive is functioning normally. This is a brand new computer serial number
A10AA 3043174. We reset the ST and the problem remains. We can do nothing.
This looks like a virus problem. I am resident in U.K.. Do you know who I can be
in touch with in order to fix this problem?
