Message-ID: <3615@tahoe.unr.edu>

Here is a (very) brief summary of TeX on the Atari ST computer
resulting from my earlier post for info a few weeks ago.

From: Jwahar R. Bammi <bammi@alpha.ces.cwru.edu>
1. software... what, where you got it (how), PD, shareware, cost etc.
TeX PD: i ported it
LateX PD: i ported it
metafont PD: ported by John Dunning
font files (pk, mf, whatever) PD: from unix TeX dist
tfm's PD: part of dist or generate with MetaF
previewers (and their fonts) PD: at least two of them: I use
one by robert stabl
printer drivers PD: posted here: epson, hp, slm, nec ...
2. hardware....
1040, Mega[2,4], amount of memory (if nonstandard): my port
runs on 1M or larger St. Previewrs require mono monitor

All of the above and more available for FTP on dsrgsun.ces.cwru.edu
in pub/atari/StTeX

From: John R. Dunning <jrd@STONY-BROOK.SCRC.Symbolics.COM>
1. software... what, where you got it (how), PD, shareware, cost etc.
Zero cost. TeX etc, MF, Fontware etc were all compiled up from the
sources available from Score (and now Science). There are a couple
previewers available in source form for the ST. TFMs, fonts etc were
compiled up from their MF sources with Metafont.

2. hardware....
M4, but originally a 520 upgraded to 1M.
printer used (and any pertinent details-trials in getting it
to work)
Panasonic 1081. Zero trouble. Just compiled up DVIEPS and off it went.
comments (bugs, koodoos)
It all works. I wish it was faster.

I bought the discs from Current Notes. The metafont program would not work
as shipped. When asking for help from someone who posted the mention of
the CN discs they suggested getting MF from an archive. He even called
to find out how it worked. I haven't yet tried it.

2. hardware....
520 w/2.5M, 60M ICD based harddisk, Deskjet.

1. software... what, where you got it (how), PD, shareware, cost etc.

System a, Office:
plain, gplain (German plain) TeX
tools GmbH, Bonn, FRG
pk fonts \magstep0 - \magstep5, most LaTeX fonts in font libraries
universal screen/printer driver by tools GmbH
supported devices: screen (95 dpi)
NEC P6 (360 dpi)
(fonts and printer not installed at present)
HP DeskJet (300 dpi)
price: ?350 DM including a lot of font disks
comments (bugs, koodoos)
TeX is very fast, printer driver is fast
but triggers tos1.4 memory pool bug.
Screen driver supports high screen resolutions!
Cheap commercial TEX, GOOD support by
tools, extremly good price/value ratio!
2. hardware....
2x Mega4, 2x sh205 (one cabinet with a seagatest 251-1)
both machines upgraded with Hypercache (16 MHz) and tos 1.4
both machines standard monochrome (sm124)
1 HP DeskJet, 1 HP DeskJet+
Network being installed (Ethernet, PAM's Net, TCP/IP)
no problems getting the software to work.

System b, personal:

software:
plain, LaTeX, SliTeX, both English and German
StTeX for 2 Meg System by J. Bammi
Metafont (German PD)
dvist
at present no printer driver, I am going to build one myself
hardware:
Hypercache Mega4, overscan (688x480 pxl on sm124)
GE-soft SCSI hostadapter, Fujitsu m2614 drive (180 MB)
HP DeskJet+

I have just thrown away my illegal copy of tools' tex. The
printer driver will be rebuilt. Metafont runs nicely, no
problems with installation.

Scenario: If I was to get a 1040ST, I would want to use it to do some
sequencing in a live situation..... Is there any sequencing software
available for the 1040ST that would allow us to do the following stuff:

* Trigger a sequence externally from another MIDI device such as a
drum pad, or MIDI foot controller.

* Able to have multiple sequences loaded at a time, and trigger them
individually of each other. Say for instance the beginning of a tune
and the ending of a tune have some keys... Trigger the starting sequence
with one Midi trigger, and trigger the second sequence with a second midi
trigger.

* Have a metronome (click track) type of thing for an earphone monitor for
the drummer (like 4 or 8 beats before the sequence starts).

I think the things I have listed above are in the order of importance.... SO,
is there anything out there for the ST that'll do this for me?

Please reply in e-mail if you can, and thanks in advance for any help!

Hello,

The are to my knowledge two such programs which allow mono vision
on an ST color monitor. The only one I've ever seen is Omniview, I will
say however that even though it is capable of many tasks, not all software
will work, and it certainly isn't near mono res. Why not just buy a mono
monitor, they are $200, and a Monitor Master switch is $40
This omniview package goes for about 60 - 70 dollars.

I wish to keep the mouse cursor within a specific rectangle on the screen.
I am sure that I am just missing something, but I can't find any GEM calls
which will set the cursor to a particular position. If I can do that, I can
keep an eye on the location of the mouse as returned by evnt_multi() and
adjust as necessary. I am sure that this is possible because GEM does it
when animating the scroll boxes for windows.

I agree with him that this is an easy way of transfering money.
However, if both parties have postal giro accounts (or whatever
they are called in English), this is absolutely free, and
the currency of the cheque doesn't matter at all. Even the postage
is free!

Even if the receiver hasn't got an account, the fee is only
1/5 of what a bank charges. He will then receive a cheque from
a well-reputed bank, like Lloyds in the UK, I believe.

I've always wondered why payment by postal giro isn't more
popular. Isn't this system available in UK, USA, France etc.?
I know that it is in the Scandinavian countries.

To sum up -

IF have_account%=TRUE THEN
PRINT account_number% : REM We all benefit!
ELSE
IF FNsystem_available THEN
PROCget_account
PRINT account_number%
ENDIF
ENDIF

(Pascal-, C-, BCPL-enthusiasts etc. will have to mail me to get
an alternate version of the above code :-)

BTW - I'm sorry, but I won't try to send you any money, because I
don't even know what arcgsh is! Perhaps that's self-evident to other
people... :-)

Subject: Portfolio developers kit???
Message-ID: <90Feb22.222234est.58748@ugw.utcs.utoronto.ca>

The entrepeneur that I said was looking for info on programming the Portfolio
called Atari USA. When the call was answered, he requested that he not be put
on hold because of the very long distance he was calling but, guess what,
hold city!! When someone finally fielded his call, he was advised to call the
800 line for info. After he explained that this line was not reachable from
Canada, he was transferred to, supposedly, a tech support person. Again he
was advised to call the 800 line and again he explained why he could not.

He related his request about developing equipment with the Portfolio as a
controller and was told that a developer's kit existed. He was further told
that codes were to be written on a standard PC and ported to the Portfolio.
When he asked for details the tech person said that he had none, he had only
heard about the package.

C'mon Atari, if you want to sell computers then support legitimate requests
for info. Does a developer's package exist or not? If so, what about a part
number to order it. Has anyone on the net seen the package?

I would appreciate it if someone from Atari who accesses this net would pass
my posting onto a tech div. of Atari so that this matter can be clarified.
Let's see how Atari stands behind its product with support.
