Subject: Booting PC Speed from Hard Disk
Message-ID: <90Feb21.162149est.58457@ugw.utcs.utoronto.ca>
The following describes the sequence I went through to try and get
PC Speed to boot DOS from my SH204 drive (which, incidentally, did not
work).
1. PC Speed software installed on drive C: (TOS HDX boot)
2. PC_INST.PRG used to assign DOS C: = TOS D:
DOS D: = TOS C:
3. run PC Speed and boot DOS 3.2 from A:
4. format C:/s (this put IO.SYS,MSDOS.SYS and COMMAND.COM on my
TOS D: partition which PC Speed was told was my DOS C: partition
(from step 2)
5. exit back to GEM and re-run PC_INST.PRG to set boot from HD.
6. re-run PC Speed and ZIP, the system just hangs.
What did I do wrong?
I am still getting stack overflow messages if I switch menus in dBASE III
Plus too fast (takes more effort than before I resoldered my board socket
but it still happens). Any PC Speed specialists on the NET to address my
problems?

Like I said "MAX is not a number, its an expression." There is an integer
in the expression (the number 32768). But there is also an operator (the
unary minus). This makes MAX an expression, not a number. Thus the real
question is what does K&R say integer expression are evaluated to? I
don't have K&R handy, but I believe it says long ints.

I've been doing some GEM programming with Personal Pascal
and have as of yet not had a problem I was not able to figure
out after a while with a little help.
However, I've got something here I've never seen before.
My program throws up a menu bar then a window, and everything
is cool. I realized I need another window, so I coded it up.
It compiled fine, and it does put the window on the screen nicely,
but the mouse pointer and the menu bar seem to interfere with
each other. Garbage will be left where the mouse pointer pops
down a menu, and things like that. Not a pretty sight.
Has anyone ever come across something like this? I really wonder
what I'm doing wrong.
Maybe I should have done this in C. :-)

I tried the RateHD a day or so ago - it is supposed to determine the speed of
a hard disk *independant* of the OS slowing it down (:-). Anyway - I tried it
on my Supra, and it gave something like a 40ms access time. Then I defragged
my root partition (only about 4Megs) and ran it again. This time, the access
time was only about 36ms! Has DLII (the defragger used) done something
unexpected to my drive, or has RateHD gone doolally?

I am new on this newsgroup. I have an Atari 520ST upgraded to 1 meg. I am
aware of the new products that Atari is planning on releasing but this STe is
new to me. I have only heard of the TT and the Stacey Laptop - unless the STe
is the same as the Stacey.... Someone give me some info...

I have an unused version of Printmaster for the Atari ST that
I have no need for. If anyone is interested in it, let
me know.

There is an ehanced version of PYRO on genie that allows you to
configure the timeout delay. I now prefer PRYO.PRG to STARSTRK.ACC
because 1) it doesn't seen to interfere with anything the way STARSTRK
does 2) it's an autofolder prg not an acc 3) it's configurable and
4) it's better aesthetically.
If there is sufficient interest I can post the configurable version
of PYRO to the binaries.
