Hi out there.
For I'm about to write a news- and UUCP-Package for the ST,
and I'm not willing to write a shell, too, I'd be very pleased
to get sources for a Unix-like Cshell anywhere.
ByTheWay, is there anyone out there on the net who already
wrote such stuff? Otherwise, what about porting **IX "rn"
to the ST?
Greetings,
Rod

O.K. so I am whining....
I have had my 1040st system for a couple years now and still like it. One
of the things that was attractive to me about the ST was the inexpensive
yet good quality software that was available. But since I purchased my
software a year or two ago, upgrades have come out, and I would like to
follow-up on those upgrades. I have had 4 experiences as of late with
upgrades:
WordPerfect
SuperBase Personal 2 --> Professional
Publishing Partner --> PageStream
UIS II --> UIS III
WordPerfect and UIS were fairly easy to upgrade, and fairly inexpensive.
The documentation addendum to WP was a little to be desired, but I can live
with that. UIS sent a manual (UIS I and II only had a couple sheets of paper),
which was really nice to have.
I just orderred my PageStream upgrade, reluctantly. I realize that they
made a major effort to rewrite the product, but what about loyalty to those
of us who buy and register? I have not yet decided to go with the new
SuperBase. From what I have heard (nothing official, yet), the upgrade is
$200.00. Again, I realize this is a whole new package, but what about a
little loyalty? Superbase even places a little propaganda in their packages
about the normal progression throught their packages, showing how you go
from one to the next. Does this bother anyone else? Any other experiences?

The Phoenix Atari ST club is dedicated to helping our members use legitimately
purchased software. We, too, do not allow pirating of software. Our PHASST
sponsored
bbs has a 40 meg drive with ONLY PD software. We do not allow piracy.
Our Agenda for Staurday's meeting includes:
15 minutes for PHAST Club business
Dave Thorenson gives a demo of a GEM Desktop replacement program
that he is writing. A first for the NAtion!! First time his program
has been demoed!!
Dave Thorenson gives a demo of his favorite game PowerDrome
15 minute break
15 minute Question & Answer period
Demo of Pratical Solution's Video Key for our 1040ST. Pratical Solutions
has an offer out where ST Clubs can get free Pratical Solutions products
if they are demoed for the club, and reviewed in the club newsletter.
Another demo, time allowing, of a game.
So, we don't have time for people to sit and pirate software.
All, in all, I think that it is a good agenda.

Hello,
I am currently writing a game in assembly that I would like to add
some digitized sound to, but I have yet to purchase a sound digitizer. I
have heard of digisound, digisound professional, replay4, and the ST sound
digitizer but I don't know which is better or worth the cost. There may be
others that I left out. I would appreciate it if anyone who knows which ST
sound digitizer is the best value for the dollar would send me the info.
Thank you,
Guy :-)

Unfortunately, the user group here in Rhode Island is a front for
piracy (or it was less than a year ago, its probably still the same).
This is the experience that Rob is probably coming from since we are both
here in little RI.
The user group slowly was turned into a piracy place by the president
who brought his friends in and in some weird way took it over. He was
never challenged basically because the decent people felt there was
no hope. These new people were very apathetic and trying to get them
to help organize things was useless. I did give a couple of presentations
and tried to help out but the membership slowly died and everyone started
to care more about the latest cracked game from Europe shown by the
president than a nice discusion and demo on different forms of video
on the ST. Most of us gave up.
No pirating was done at the meeting but it was all done after the meetings
at peoples houses and there was often a cover charge.
I'm really, really glad that there are some good user groups out there
and I wish them the best of luck. The net is my only user group.
Disclamer: These are my opinions alone from experience seen and a few that
I have heard about.

Stephen, while I have noticed the same problems in PgS 1.8,I am nonethelss
very pleased with PgS 1.8. For example, I have owned 2 laser printers in the
last
2 years, the SLM804, and now the Panasonic KXP4450 Laser Partner. One thing that
I enjoyed doing with my old dot matrix printer was printing out labels for
floppies. I used an old program called "ACTION" (circa 1986!!) with my previous
dot matrix printer. But when I got my first laser printer I couldn't use it
it any longer. Finally, AVERY has come out with a aser printer label for 3.5"
floppies. There are 9 labels for 8.5"x11" page, each label being 2.75" square.
Well, I sat down with PgS 1.8, and in a couple of hours learning made some forms
for the AVERY labels. Andd they printed great!! I was even able to rotate the
text 180
degrees to place on the spine and the back of the floppy. I made a bunch of
labels
for some pd disks for the PHAST Club withg PgS 1.8.
so, while PgS 1.8 may still have some bugs, it works very well for me,
and I was able to learn to use some of its neat features very quickly.
Calamus, on the other hand, is still sitting on my shelf. I have yet to
understand how to use its text editor, and its icons are very confusing.
So, I like PgS 1.8, and I even wrote a letter to Softlogik congratulating them
on the 1.8 release.
