Subject: C++ on ST?
Are we ever likely to see a commercial C++ compiler on the ST?
Having got fed up with seeing yet another C compiler being released
(there must be 10 or so now) I contacted the UK distributor of Lattice
C. Apparently Lattice have a C++ *translator* for the Amiga but do not
intend to release it on the ST until they see how well version 5 of
their C compiler sells (in UK, Europe, USA ?).
g++ I hear you say - too big and no support I reply.
Rather than flood the net with mutual complaint messages I suggest any of
us who do want to see a commercial C++ compiler on the ST contact the
appropriate distributors and compiler developers and lobby them.
Alternatively, are there any C/C++ developers listening who are adventurous
enough to release the *first* accessible Object-Oriented language for the ST?
(NB Little Smalltalk is not suitable for large scale development and the
Dortmund Smalltalk-80 is too expensive (about 600 sterling) and needs 4Mb)
Apologies for posting this item as a followup, I haven't figured
out how to post direct yet and 'g mod.announce.newusers'did not work!.

compression is no longer required to make the TOS ROM image fit. With the
exception overhead gone, the AES moves along noticeably faster, too.

Subject: RPN calculators.
Help!!
I presently use a commercial product called 'Partner ST'. It is quite
good as a multi accessory but it occupies a lot of space. Fine on my mega 4 at
work but a real pain on my 1040 at home, and as for my even lower paid side
kick who can only afford a 520, well..... The only part of the accesory that I
use constantly is the Reverse Polish Notation calculator (like an HP calc).
Query? Does anyone know of a good PD desk accessory RPN calculator? An
address would be good a UUcode even better. Thanks in advance.

That is wrong. The TT shifter is different from the STE shifter. The
TT shifter gives you the new TT resolutions (640x480 16 color, 320x480
256 color, and 1280x960 monochrome), with the enhanced palette of 4096
colors in color resolutions. The STE shifter has the enhanced palette,
but not the new resolutions. The STE shiftger also allows fine screen
scrolling by allowing arbitrary (wordwise) screen alignment. The TT
shifter requires 8 byte alignment of screens. The two shifters are
compatible in that they are located at the same place in memory.
That's what gives us ST video compatibility on the TT. But it is not
possible to use the STE shifter to get TT video modes.

Atari Corp. policy is that we offer developer support to registered
developers, not to end users. I know how you feel about the issue,
and I'm sorry if you feel "left out." It seems to me, though, that it
just wouldn't be cost effective for us to offer the level of technical
support we give to developers to end users.
Incidentally, developers who ask can get STE release notes from Atari.
I believe it is a requirement to be "re-registered" under our new
nondisclosure policy. This new registration is free of charge for
registered developers and will allow us to provide better support to
developers actively working on ST products. This is part of the
improved developer support program which was announced at COMDEX.
US developers can find out more by contacting Gail Johnson at Atari.

You mistakenly imply that Atari Corporation (the parent of all
subsidiaries) has "kept the UK waiting." This is not the case. The UK
has TOS 1.4. If they don't want to manufacture or ship it, that's their
call. We don't tell them how to run their operations.
(I don't really know that much about the subs: for example, I think
they order ROMs from Atari Taiwan. The point is that Atari Corporation
has provided all subs with TOS 1.4, and from that point on it's up to
the sub.)
