Pointers appreciated.

Whats so great about Dave Small's vapourware product? There is a german
board out called PAK68 - full documentation, full schematics, full ROM
modifications that has been out for well over a year now and is
relatively cheap. Its a 68020 with space for floating point processor.
Sounds pretty good to me and is available now!

Subject: Multi-Switch cable: A review
Product Review: Multi-Switch cable for Atari's and Multisync-type monitors
Manufacturer: IB Computers
9244 S.W. Beaverton-Hillside Hwy
Beaverton, OR 97005
(503) 297-8425
Background: I delved into the world of Atari color by purchasing an AT&T CRT329M
Multisync-type monitor. In fact it comes off the same assembly line as
the NEC monitors and is identical to the II+.
I had planned on having my local Atari dealer make a cable for me; the
specs for which have already been broadcast over the net. He turned me
on to this new product, Multi-Switch. He gave it to me at cost since he
wanted feedback on how it worked. ($US 32.95)
The 4' cable has a 3"x4"x2" box mid-length with a color/mono button. As
expected, changing to and from mono and color reboots the system. There
are also two RCA jacks on the box for audio-in and audio-out.
Results: What versatility! The monochrome mode is a bit hazy on using
multisync but its quite acceptable. The color modes are
exhilarating. Crisp and solid displays. 8~)
There wasn't enough juice on the DIN cable to sufficiently power the
box, so I was forced to buy a 9v. 500mA adaptor. There is a female-side
inlet built into the box, so they must have expected this problem. The
last outlet on the power strip thus being eaten up. 8~(
I do miss a volume control on the audio. I have lots of background
noise as home (two boys) and can't drown it out anymore. 8~(
Overall, I would rate this as a solid product for those of us who need
it. It has it's shortcomings but I consider them minor in light to the
versatility provided by the monitor.

Subject: PROG-A16 being moved
The BITNET-addressable list that contains the binaries posted in
INFO-ATARI16 (very few these days, more on that later), is being moved
to LISTSERV@UOGUELPH. The CANADA01 node has been moved to University
of Toronto.
I started PROG-A16 2 or 3 years ago to archive binaries posted to
the discussion list. It has served a purpose during a time that we
were all very hungry for programs. The binaries are no longer being
posted, and I guess I'm not as 'hungry' as I ued to be. I used to
put UniTerm on it whenever Simon sent me a copy, and I had a few
other 'feeds', but lately I've been rather lax about keeping new
programs up on the server (sorry).
There have been other BITNET-addressable servers around, but they
were either sparse (SILMARIL@FINHUTC) or 'wierd' (ATARINET in Texas,
that only listens to 'messages', which is OK for people directly on
BITNET, but only if all nodes between you were 'up').
Lately, of course, there's the excellent Panarthea (Thanks SG!), which
is a complete 'mirror' of the mysterious (to us RSCS'ers) comp.binaries.st.
I see little future in keeping PROG-A16 running, unless it is as an
'echo repeater' for Panarthea. (I've lost Steve's address, so I hope
the rest of you don't mind a small personal here...)
Steve, If you read this, what do you think of this idea? It would
offload your machine somewhat, but I have no idea how busy it is.
I could set up the server so that it archives all files you send to
PROG-A16@UOGUELPH.
For the rest of you: Any comments? Please reply direct (I repeat:)

|
|There must be more to this than TOS 1.4. I have been using 3.0 with TOS 1.4
|for several months, without so much as a hiccup.
|
|Incidentally, the new RAMdisk on GEnie is aimed at a single specific
|problem, which occurs with version 4.0 and higher of ICD's disk driver.
|It has no impact on anything else. It is backward compatible with all
|other systems.

Well, looks I'd better go try it again! I've already had a couple of rounds
at it, but I'm still missing something.
I am using ICDBOOT.PRG 4.2.0. I have tried disabling all my AUTO programs and
ACC's. I tried disabling the boot program's cache (this previously allowed
me to use TURTLE with ICDBOOT 4.1.8 in TOS 1.2).
I will have another go at it tonight. I'll try all the above again, and then
try going back to earlier versions of ICDBOOT. Guess I'll even try booting
off of floppy. Something's gotta work!

I would like to know the same! Will a Mac emulator (Spectre GRC) work
on both the STE and the TT?

Subject: Vapourware!!!
>How many netters have actually used a NeXT computer or even seen one. Just
>because YOU have not seen one does not mean it does not exist or it is
>vapourware. The same goes for the TT, the ATW, the STACY, the LYNX.
On the subject of future machines, I recenetly read that the
availability of the new "STE and TT" machines would be announced in
Feburary of next year." The STE will apparently be '030 based and
have something like 1000x7000 colour pixels. Cost for one of these
will be about $1,600. That's a fairly amazing price for a 68030 box.
Does anyone have the real dope on when we can expect an '030 Atari
machine in the states and will it really be inexpensive? I've been
thinking about getting something cheap just for music applications
(cheap meaning the Mac is too expensive) and the MEGA fills the bill,
but with the '030 based Atari's just around the corner.... well.
Any details?
