I'm amazed that I haven't seen any mention of C++ for the Atari ST.
Does anyone if there is such a thing? After all, the IBM PC has had it for
years now.

There are several mail-order houses that carry it.. unfortunately, i
don't have an ST mag around right now, but i recall calling a house
about 3 weeks ago inquiring about prices... i believe i was quoted
in the neighborhood of $472.00 .. this is a damn good price...
I paid $475 originally (a year+ ago) and have put in another 80-100
in updates. The current version is 2.2 which includes the new

"Softlink" program- a partitioning/multi-tasking piece of code:
YOu can create up to 9 separate partitions for GEM or TOS each with
a virtual desktop... The "multi-tasking" feature is ONLY with
respect to the added ability of NOTOATOR being able to run concurrently
with a word processor etc.. in other words.. one can have NOTATOR
playing sequences in the background while you write a report..
In addtition, if you have another midi program you like to use..
NOTATOR can record all midi events being generated by the "other"
midi program.. that's pretty slick. ANyway, i don't know how
good the task switching abilities are.. nor if the "multi-tasking"
features are reliable... Believe it or not, i have had NOTATOR 2.2
update with Softlink for over 10 days now and have yet to install
it on my hard drive... I have been having so much fun with my new
GCR, i've barely been in ST mode...

Wow, there were programs that ran OK on the Mega's too. Have you ever
tried to get some DOS 3.2 programs to run under DOS 4.0.
Har! That's a laugh.

Ah, no. Yes, most of the material that SURVIVED until now from that
era works - because people followed the (few) programming guidelines that
would help insure that slight differences would not crash their code. The
ST is a more complex machine and has more rules (which doesn't excuse the
problem; published guidelines are published guidelines, and if the software
doesn't follow them, that's not Atari's fault) and therefore more violations
of those rules - and more crashes upon grades.
I do remember software that wouldn't run on the AT, much less a PS/2...
fortunately, I haven't seen any of that kind of material in quite a while.
It's not just Atariland where this happens. I use Amiga systems (three
at the home/office right now) and haven't had any problems when upgrading,
except with a couple of games (and we know who you are, Psygnosis! :-( ).
However, there are others out there who have had this happen. So the problem
is everywhere; people just don't pay attention to the rules.

If your Formdial is the same like mine it works like this:

Formdial increases the speed of closing dialoges. If you open a dialog-
box Formdial saves the screen in memory. If you close the dialog, it
restores the screen.
The application needs no time to redraw the window under the dialogbox.

The best tool that I have found for cleaning up FAT's is Hard Disk
Sentry from Beckenmyer Development tools. I find it essential because
certain Atari programs (apparently including dBMAN) sometimes mangle the
directory structure of a hard disk when they crash.

SENTRY is very good about rebuilding a mangled directory structure.

Michtron also peddles something in their utilities pack and ICD is selling
a product called CLEANUP. I have not had any experience with either of
these.

Does anyone know if SPICE (I guess it would actually be PSPICE) is there
somewhere for the ST?
If not, is it public domain?
If so, does anyone know where I can get the source? (I guess this question
doesn't, but as long as I've asked it...)

It's because they've gotten tired of slamming Commodore-Amiga. (He
said, with half a smiley face.) It seems that some people just have to
have SOMETHING to look down upon, to make them feel alright about the
machines they purchased...

Firstly on the subject of Floppies. I have access to three 'IBM' compats
with 3.5 Inch floppies. An AMSTRAD portable, an IBM PS/2 Model 70 and an
Apricot Zen-i. Now the lattter two have 1.44 Meg disks in. They often have
problems reading disk formatted on the Amstrad, (They too think they are 1.4
meg format.) so I suspect there may be a bug in DOS3.3 (which what all the
machines are using). Also IBM released a 'patch' for the ROM BIOS in some
PS/2 machines so if that is missing it might cause the problems. However
disks formatted on my STE seem to work fine in the Amstrad and the 'real'
IBM, but I have not done any 'extensive' tests.

On the subject of the STe one recent add I saw said they only had STe's.
However we don't have FCC testing in the U.K. so I suspect thats the delay
in the USA.

I think the piracy issue is a bit emotive. I guess one problem is that most
PC's are used as part of some business activity. So they have a software
budget, so if you write a PC package you stand a good chance of selling
at least a few copies, so if some get pirated you don't notice much. (assuming
of course its not a game). In fact most people I know with PC's have several
pirate copies of very expensive packages that they 'copied' from their
employers machine. With ST'S I guess the business market isn't there. So
the piracy looks much worse. In fact I know several teen-agers with ST's and
in general if they like a game they go out and buy a copy. In general they
seem to have less pirated s/w than most 'personal' PC users.

P.S. I suppose I ougft to say the above is my personal opinion.
PPS. Ken, Any chance of getting the TOS1.6 Med Res Boot fix posted here or
do I have to mail my disk to ATARI for a fix. (Nope the dealer I bought from
dosn't have it in his local shop, his Tech Support center is moving house so
I can't ask them until next week).

Ken, you seem to really like Turbo C from the Germans. Have you tried
the Version 5 of the Lattice C from the English company Hisoft yet??
I am sure that others here would like to know what you think of the
vers 5 lattice c compiler.

I have asked my local Atari store to try to locate the Lattice C compiler, but
Michtron (who distributes other HiSoft products like WERCS and the C
Interpreter)
does not distribute the Lattice C compiler here in the USA. So, my dealer is
trying
to locate another source for it. Meanwhile, I wait.

Also, I hear that my dealer has a source for the commerical Flowcharting program
that is available in England. He says that he should be able to get it in a
month
or so. I hope that it is as good as some of the flowcharting programs on the
Mac, because
that is the only program that is out for the Mac that I can't find for the ST.

So, Ken have you tried the Lattice C vers 5 compiler? What do you think?

Thanks.

Presumably registered developers know how; they just aren't allowed to
tell you.

Andrew, save yourself the $40 and do NOT buy the TurboJet GDOS printer
driver from Neocept!! Buy the GDOS printer driver set from Migraph instead!!

I know because I was foolish enough to buy the TurboJet drivers without asking
first, and was it ever a mistake. First, the GDOS driver for my Panasonic
KXP4450
Laser Partner printer does not allow complete grpahics on a page. I bought the
shareware program IMG CAT from the author on GEnie and when I wne to print out
a catalog of IMG pics d/led from GEnie it would only print 6 pics from page,
the rest of the page was blank. I asked on GEnie about it and was told that the
TurboJet GDOS driver was at fault. I went out and bought the Migraph GDOS
printer drivers and everything now prints fine. I have been told that there
are other programs which don't work well with the Neocept TurboJet GDOS drivers.

And to boot it all, the Migraph drivers were cheaper than the Neocept TurboJet!!

So, try to order the Migraph GDOS drivers and you will be happy!!

Standard disclaimers apply; i speak for myself.
