It's not a "don't clear BSS" bit -- it's a "don't clear HEAP" bit! The
BSS is the uninitialized storage your program declares that it will
need: the C language guarantees that this will be zero, and the ST
compiles by zeroing it when you're loaded. The REST of the memory you
get allocated, above and beyond your declared BSS, is the heap. For
reasons I do not know, GEMDOS originally cleared all of that, too.
That's real slow on a 68000 with 4MB of memory, so I added that bit to
tell Pexec "You don't have to clear my heap." Programs with that bit
set load faster. Not all programs can stand it: MS Write, for one,
expects all that space to be clear.

There is zero chance of this. Atari's policy is, "The only TOS we have
to support is the one in Atari masked ROMs." If you have EPROMS, you
don't have an Atari-supported OS. This way Atari gets out from under
the burden of supporting whatever code happens to be in your EPROMs,
with whatever "patches" and "fixes" and "improvements" you or somebody
else put there.

Before you jump all over me, of course, I'm being pedantic. I know
that real TOSes can be in EPROMs.

I believe the GNU C++ compiler has been successfully ported over to the
ST domain, and I also understand that the FSF is developing interest in
ST's (net rumor). Another nifty story is their response to Apple legal
silliness.

Hallo!

Sure there is one of the best C and C++ compilers available for ATARI
ST.
GNU-C, GNU-C++, and all other GNU-Software are available for TOS and
minix from terminator.cc.umich.edu via anonymous ftp.
Hope this helps.

Has anyone from the UK (or the rest of Europe), FTP'd PROG_A16 if so
how do you accomplish this? I appear to be able to get to earn-relay (UK),
although not the request for a password. I can also successfully ftp via
JANET using hhcp, although I am not sure this is true ftp.

Any help gratefully recieved,

Nick.

Hi,
Someone wondered about the "useless" Hebrew characters in the character
set. Why, it is part of an ongoing education process. For us Atarians it
is necessary to know
1) German
2) Hebrew
3) a smattering of English to read Usenet News.
What's wrong?
(Well, learn Swedish, then you can read my booklet about TurboC for Atari
too ;-) )

Why didn't you just let it go, you ass. Now you've

Please could some kind soul either mail me direct, or repost, the emacslsp.uaf
file which was in comp.binaries.atari.st recently. The file was violently
chewed in transit. TIA

Message-ID: <5076@crdgw1.crd.ge.com>

I just sold my 1Meg ST. I wanted to upgrade to a mega2. So I called my
local dealer. No such thing in stock. So I called a dealer from where
I used to live. No such thing in stock. I called 2 dealers a friend
recommended, ready, no such thing in stock. I got out the latest
issues of STExpress, Start, Atari Explorer, and Current Notes. I
called every firm that looked like it sold computers (about 10 stores
total). NO SUCH THING IN STOCK.

This is crazy. Here I am, a person wanting to buy a mega and nobody
(well at least that I can find) stocks one.

Fine, be that way. I 'll just buy a STe. Now here is where I need some
help. Can some of the people in Canada who are reading this please
either post or e-mail me the phone number/address of your favorite
Canadian Atari store. Preferable one who would sell a STe to a
foreigner like me. If they are near Montreal, I can just drive up
there (about a 5 hr drive). Otherwise, it must be shipped.

Help me, Make my day. Enable me to get a computer once again.

thanks all
