While I don't know the details for any of the paper-based magazines from
Europe, I _can_ give you information on a disk-based magazine from Europe,
called ST News.

The latest issue, volume 4 number 4, contains a lot of text resulting from
a 3-week tour the editors made of England's software houses (and some other
programmers in England). It also has about 30 minutes of computer music AND
4 demo programs (as well a couple of graphics ...) One of the demos is a
4-voice digital synth, another is from the designer of Tower Topple (I *think*
that's the U.S. version title) -- a "preview" of another game the programmer
is working on.

Generally, articles on the disk include reviews of European software, hints
for some adventure games, and minor to major technical articles on programming
-- for example, the past 4 or 5 issues included tips on including music
in programs and working with some of the graphics that are used to create
demos.

There isn't a subscription, per se. I arranged with the editors to provide
copies of ST News to folks in the U.S.A., and have all back-issues currently
available. I've posted the information several times in various places, but
have never seen much response.

Anyway, to get the latest issue (the 25th "anniversary" issue, vol. 4, no. 4),
you can send a blank double-sided disk and a STAMPED, self-addressed envelope
to:
David Paschall-Zimbel, P.O. Box 13038, Minneapolis, MN 55414

If you prefer, our local user group will send you a disk (and notify you when
the next issue is available) for $3.00. Part of the money pays for the disk
and postage, and the rest is split 50/50 with the editors of ST News to
compensate for the expenses they have in producing the disk in the first
place.

Hello,
Does anyone out there know of or use a background uploading/downloading
program that is either shareware or public domain. I get on the net and
download ALOT of things and it takes incredible amounts of time with a
1200 baud modem and background downloading would really be great. Thanks
in advance for any help.

initmous does it, but I wouldn't reccommend it. Every program I've had
with it drove me crazy because invariably my mouse would run out of
room, and having to pick it up and put it back down closer to me is
bothersome.

>2/ How do I bound the mouse to a box xmin-xmax,ymin-ymax ?

I imagine it could be done by checking mouse position, and calling
initmous if you exceeded the limits, but ther is probably a better way.

>3/ What does the GEM function CELLARAY and how do I use it ?
I've never seen it used. Apparently, it divides the screen up into
rectangles, each of which has an associated color. When a graphic
operaion would draw, the color drawn would be the color of the rectangle
in which the pixel lies. I wonder if this function takes over the
screen, making it difficult to use other colors? To get around that, if
needed another virtual workstation could be used, I suppose.

Subject: MAC: a shareware Mac emulator

After trying Aladin and Spectre, I'd agree that Aladin is
a 'tougher' mac-emulator. If you support the 128K roms
I'd support you! Too much is 64K-incompatible to support
the 64K roms.

Subject: Michtron's Super Conductor

Help please! I saw Michtron's Super Conductor program on clearance in
a store the other day. It looked pretty good so I decided to buy it.
Unfortunately, it won't run. It starts up, begins to draw its gem screen,
then crashes with a bus error. I'm running a Mega ST with TOS 1.4.
What gives? Is this program one of the few that won't run under the new
TOS?

Subject: Mouse pointer

I recently downloaded an accessory called MouseKa (?) that lets you change
the mouse pointer to either a still or animated pointer. I really like
some of the new pointers but I cannot figure out how to get the pointer
to change and be different at bootup. Has anyone out there done this?
If so, I would appreciate the help.

Subject: spectrum and quantumpaint formats

Some more quick questions - Does anyone have information as to how spectrum
and quantum paint programs are able to make the ST display more colours than
usual? I'm especially bewildered as to how quantum paint can display
3375 colours or more! Any info appreciated...
