I don't know much about finances, but couldn't a lot of these "losses"
be actually just expenses incurred on the development of the new systems that
are about to be released and that Atari will compensate for this with the
increase in sales projected for the new systems. I would say Atari will easily
make this up with the sale of the new systems.

Just my humble opinion,

Has anyone come in contact with a program to convert so-called EasyDraw
metafiles into so-called standard metafiles? They both use the .GEM extension
but most of the programs I have only accept/produce one form or the other.
If anyone has any knowledge of such a beast please let me know. I have access

Can anyone out there perhaps give me a source where I could get
a hold of 'Sozobon C'? Like, a public domain place in Canada or
the U.S. and cost.

Thanks! Merci!

Or ... could someone tell me why ~D228 as a macro in PageStream does not

Not a comment on rentals, directly, but not all local dealers are as helpful
as indicated above. While we are lucky enough to have one here, and even
though I am quite a good customer (ie I try to support him buy buying
hardware and software from him), when I asked to see a demo of a program that
he had for sale to see if it was worth the money, he told me that he'd be
glad to let me try it out on his machines IF I PURCHASED IT FIRST! In other
words, I had to BUY it before I could demo it (and they have a no return
policy on software except for defective disks, which they exchange). This
was at our authorized Atari retailer--the other stores that sold Atari
software solved the problem nicely by not having any Ataris around at all,
so that you also had to buy it before trying it out.

(It seems he was having trouble selling packages that weren't shrink-wrapped,
and hadn't bought a machine to re-shrink-wrap the stuff yet.)

And, if you can't find a legitimate business that rents software and you
intend to make an illegal copy you will find an individual. Or, if all
else fails you will go in with a friend and buy "a copy to share".

I, for one, am sick of buying stuff that doesn't work. For example, I
bought Publishing Partner back in the old days. The first upgrade means
that it sort-of worked. I then bought a PageStream upgrade that broke in
the first 5 minutes. The story continues.

After much wasted time and money, a friend "loaned" me a copy of Ventura
Publisher. I worked with it for a week - time enough to learn about it
and find out that it does what I need to do and does it properly. So, I
bought it.

I have a copy of PC-Write. It is ShareWare. I do most of my text entry
on UNIX but if I decide to do some on DOS using PC-Write I will "buy" it.
Why? Because I have had a chance to test it out and it does what I want
for a fair price.

> Now you want to give these people a legit license to walk out of
> a place with software that they have no intention of ever buying?

Probably because software manufactures don't offer the correct alternative
- a 30 day return policy. Raima corporation offered such a policy. I
evaluated their product and decided not to use it. The result is that I
can say very nice things about it. It did what it was supposed to do but
not what I wanted. If I had been stuck with it I would be telling
everyone what a bad product it is.

I purchased an evaluation copy of Progress. It did what I wanted and I
bought the real copy. I have been using it for about 3 years and they
have made close to $10,000 off of me. If it hadn't been for the $99
elvaluation copy I am sure I would have never bought the product.

My point is that there are two kinds of people: the ones that swipe
software and the ones that pay for what they use. It is too bad that
those of us who are willing to pay for what we use become the victims of
marketing plans that attempt to prevent software theft. The theft will
continue anyway.

I can rent a Ford to see if that is the kind of car that I want to drive.
I can "try out" a job before I agree to work somewhere for the next 5
years and/or the rest of my life. I expect the same with regard to my
purchase of software. Yes, I know it is easier to swipe but that isn't my
problem. Maybe if vendors would offer a little added value with the
purchase, like decent support, people would understand the advantage of
purchase.
