I'd like to use the AES functions appl_tplay() and appl_trecord(). Unfortunatel
y, I still have old ROMs of 1985, and it seems that these functions do not work
because of them. Does anybody know what are the bugs in the old ROMs ? Is it (
reasonably) possible to implement them by soft, where could I get the listings
(in C, or ev. Asm ) ?

Please send reply on EARN/BITNET: K298027@CZHRZU1A

Subject: Getting C

The recent discussions on gcc, g++ and sozoban have been very interested. I
have been wanting to learn C for the last year or so but didn't have the $$ for
Laser or MWC. Of course none of the ST mags would mention the pd/sware
stuff... Anyway, sozoban seems like something I could use.

Uh-oh, problem. Panarthea seems busted from our site. Short requests, index,
etc. are ok but not long ones, such as (wouldn't you know it) sozobon partxx.

Would some kind soul be willing to email me a copy? See .sig for address.
Perhaps I'll finally be able to try my favorite crashing techniques in C!

Prediction: Atari will release the ATW in the US no sooner than one month
after Apple releases a RISC based multiprocessor box and lots of hype.

*Guess which company has been buying huge lots of 88000s recently?*

Recently I have seen some questions about GFA-Basic (interpreter,
compiler). In the January issue of the german ST-Magazin there was
an ad about it, maybe someone is interested in this offer :
GFA Basic Development System Version 2.0
(interpreter + compiler) DM 49.90
same as above, version 3.0 DM 198.00

Message-ID: <483b9177.14a1f@force.UUCP>

I bought WERCS late in 1988 and haven't updated it since. Recently
I tried using it to create a resource file (.RSC) with about 10
different dialogue boxes with assorted text strings and buttons in them.
But, at random points in time, WERCS would corrupt the WERCS HRD file
containing the variable names given to each object. Thus, I have not been
able to finish my RSC file.

Could someone from Hisoft (who is I believe the original UK publisher
of WERCS) tell me what is the latest version number and release date
of WERCS? and tell me if Michtron, the USA distributor of WERCS, has
it?? If Michtron doesn't have the latest version of WERCS, could you tell
me how I, who lives in Arizona USA, can get the update. Heck, WERCS is
worth buying all over again if I could just get a working version!!

TIA

Last week people were talking about selling Megas to Universities as UNIX
workstations. Is there a version of UNIX for the ST that works with
X Windows? If so will it make use of the Viking 19" monitor?

I am interested in setting up a small X Windows system, and would like
to use my ST. All information on any version of UNIX for the ST will
be appreciated. (With/with out X Windows, if it even exists for the ST)

Thanks, pi.

Message-ID: <9001230157.AA05784@ascsu1.SLCS.SLB.COM>

Here's my first attempt at a posting....

For three years I've been using Megamax C and then Laser C. I've
accumulated the bugs described below, several of which cost me many hours
to track down. I sent a letter (U.S. Mail) last September 24 saying
what I've said here, but haven't heard anything back from Megamax. My
questions are:

Does anyone know if or when Megamax intends to fix these or any other bugs?

If I switch to MWC (or some other C) can I expect similar headaches?

1. Pointer arithmetic

This problem has been there since one of the old Megamax C releases. It
prohibits pointer arithmetic on pointers to arrays longer than 32K bytes.

2. Compiler crash on static initialization
In LaserC v1.0, the compiler didn't crash, but it allocated too few bytes
of storage (one).

3. OR operation on register long
This one appeared on changing from v2.0 to v2.1.

main()
?
register struct xyz
?
int p1;
int p2;
? *struct_ptr;
register int i;
register long j;

/* uncomment the following line and compiler crashes*/
/* static char compiler_crash[4] = ?1?; */

/* following uses 16 bit addition when 32 is appropriate*/
struct_ptr += i;

/* following won't change j */
j |= i + 1;

?

These are my opinions, not my employers'.

hi!

the minix newsgroup has split off from info-a16 quite a while ago with
the consequence that most of the st users on the net lack information on
the present state of that os. The nearly permanent discussion on
multitasking on the st shows that there is wide spread interest in a
cheap and working multitasking os (no replies like "why I don't need
multitasking", please! no one is forced to use something different from
tos). From that background i would like to ask if some of the Minix
users might sum up their experience with the os...

a few additional questions:

- is virtual memory provided?

- how fast is the file system? Has anyone made comparisons with tos1.4?
what time does, for example, gcc 1.34 need to compile and link a "
hello world" program without optimisation? Under tos1.4 and a SH205
this time is 9 s, mostly disk io. (Fastload flag set, cache111
installed). Of course, the compilation must be the only user process
in minix.

- how efficient is the task switching? (MX2/TOS1.2 needs
5-10% of the cpu time).

- how does minix compare in this respect to cumana os/9, the mt-c-shell?

- how many user processes can be run efficiently?

- is it possible do do graphics?

- does minix run with the hyperscreen mod?

- has a window oriented user interface been implemented (e.g. the
bellcore window manager)?

- what shells are available? BASH? What other GNU stuff?

- what about the problems with the supra host adaptor mentioned a while
ago? Was this a problem of hardware or of software? Or simply a user
error?

- is it possible to read and write 82t/10s tos disks?

Thanks

Michael

hi!

I am just putting two megas into a VAX/PDP11 tower. This frees the desk
of two boxes but the monitor cable (SM124) is too short. Any source or
suggestion for a replacement?

As far as I know, the original cable uses a 75 Ohm coaxial connection
for the video signal and 5 shielded leads for the rest. Is that true?

I think this topic may be of quite general interest . So I suggest a
discussion on the net.

Thanks!

Hi all |

Please could somebody tell me how to reach the CI$ network from BITNET ?
Or is there a better way to contact ANTIC via e mail ?

Hey folks, it would be a wonderfull thing if someone could sommon the
networking information (which networks are reachable, archive-hosts, ..)
so that beginners in networking could fetch this info.
But maybe there is one out there, would be fine |

Thanks in advance

... tonight I had the time to open my drive again. I used a fan made by
MICRONEL AG, Tagelswangen/Z"urich, article no. F52AM Q12DN CK (12 V DC).
The fan is nearly compatible to the original fan. It is slightly larger
than that and thinner. But it still fits into the original box. I bought
it from a computer shop in Berlin (by mail order). The people have
advertised in the ST Magazin, I don't know how often since I read that
magazine only occasionally. The original fan has a stronger flow of air
but that proved not to be a problem over operation times of several
hours in a warm room.

Does anyone have the source for STEVIE (vi like editor) if so, could
they please email it to me.

You can even reply to this just to let me know that it got off site
if you like.

Yup! It's beginning to look that way.

Some dealers are already dropping the ST.

Users are comparing the European ST shows with dire UK ones.

TOS 1.4 (well I needn't repeat myself :-)

Software houses are not bothering to bring out new versions of their ST
packages. (eg. Timeworks, Autoroute)
Their distributors don't tell anyone this. They get you to register your
product so that you will be informed of updates but there will never be any.
They just send you more flyers for new products.

Dave Small thinks Hi-Soft are a good company. We registered our Spectre 128 and
have yet to hear any word on software updates. It took two letters to get
information on upgrading to Spectre GCR and even then they had engineered
the cost to make it better to just buy the GCR. (The first letter yielded a
flyer!)

Those companies still producing ST software seem to be going off in the
wrong direction. (Calamus will NEVER have a Postscript driver I was told by a
Signa rep. Thus no-one here is remotely interested in it.)

Yup, these are sad times.
