in updates. The current version is 2.2 which includes the new

"Softlink" program- a partitioning/multi-tasking piece of code:
YOu can create up to 9 separate partitions for GEM or TOS each with
a virtual desktop... The "multi-tasking" feature is ONLY with
respect to the added ability of NOTOATOR being able to run concurrently
with a word processor etc.. in other words.. one can have NOTATOR
playing sequences in the background while you write a report..
In addtition, if you have another midi program you like to use..
NOTATOR can record all midi events being generated by the "other"
midi program.. that's pretty slick. ANyway, i don't know how
good the task switching abilities are.. nor if the "multi-tasking"
features are reliable...

I have used the features in "Softlink" and I'm not terribly impressed. It is
nice to be able to get back to the desktop and run some simple things without
having to exit out of Notator but I have found that I lose certain things when
switching between partitions, like the state of the key click. Also, I have
yet to find a MIDI program that works with SoftLink. I didn't expect my
hostile Dr.T patch editors to work but TurboSynth, from Digidesign didn't
work! I was able to bring up the program and do all the normal operations but
I could not use any MIDI functions in TurboSynth. I have reported these
problems to Digidesign. Softlink also requires a minimum of a 2 meg system
and with that you can only have 2 partitions, Notator and one other partition
of around 700KB. Things are a lot easier with a 4 meg system.

I will say that I have been impressed with the support from Digidesign for
Notator. I have received several timely updates from them for free or a very
reasonable cost. The update to 2.2 costs $30 but I did not have to pay for it
since I had reported several bugs that were to be fixed in that release.
However, the most glaring of the bugs, severe timing problems when playing
MIDI format files, is still there. Sigh, maybe someday I will be able to
import files from other sequencers.

I am currently using the EPSON LQ Printer Driver which I purchased at an
EPSON dealer here locally. As I recall, it cost around $45. The program came
on two MAC disks and included System 6.0.2 , as well as a cable to hook a
MAC PLUS to the printer (I sold mine to someone for $10, which made the driver
a bit more affordable.) As there is mention made in the manual about a
program called Printworks, I believe this program was used to write the
driver originally, so buying Printworks might be another option. The driver
works in 180 x 180 and 180 x 360 modes, and does a very good job printing.
ATM does work quite well with it. As far a Imagewriter emulation goes, the
driver uses standard MAC fonts, but for good print quality, you must have
a font 2 1/2 times larger than the one you wish to use installed in the system,
i.e. if you want to use a 10pt. font, you must have the same font installed
at 25pts. There is also a desk accessory included to allow you to match the
internal fonts of the printer to the screen fonts of your choice....

I used this program until I formatted my hard drive to have partitions
bigger than 16 megabytes (allowable under TOS 1.4). I had no problems with
FSCK *until* it tried checking partitions over 16 megs, then it gave false
readings (ie. bad sectors where there were none). Others in the local
atari club (San Diego) have reported the same thing. Be careful...

Hi I need some help with installing MICRO RTX. (I can't evaluate it's
usefulness to me if I can't even get it to work !!) .

I managed to assemble a .BIN library from the RTXBIND.S source by
slightly altering it to fit my C compilers needs. ( Assembled using HISOFT's
DEVPAC 2 for LATTICE C v3.04).
The .PRG is in the AUTO folder on an otherwise blank floppy, (I
Don't have a HARD DISK so there no problems there). On booting from the floppy
the Copyright Notice is displayed and the system exits to DESKTOP, so it
looks like the system has installed.
If I compile a simple program i.e. turning the code fragment for
RTX_INSTALL into a program which prints out "Installed" or "Not Installed"
then it compiles, links (with the MICRO RTX library) and executes without
crashing but does not print out either of the above messages.
On Investigation using MON ST I discovered that the program was falling
over at the TRAP #5 in RTX_INSTAll with an 'Illegal Trap' message. (Is this due
to MON ST stealing/reseting the TRAP #5 vector ??). TRAP #5-#15 all point to
the same address is this correct ???
Is there something going on in the STARTUP of Lattice C which causes
problems with MICRO RTX ?? I'd love to find out as the system looks like the
answer to my dreams.

P.S My system is a 520STFM with 1/2meg intenal,1meg external drives
and TOS v1.3 in ROM and is as bought.

I have ICD CLEANUP, and it did save me lots of times.

However, there is one small catch (I believe). It only works with ICD host
adaptors.

I can't confirm this, as I only have an ICD, but I remember trying to run it
off of floppy when my hard drive was really on the fritz, and it said 'no ICD
host adaptor present' and aborted. (the DMA bus was locked, I think)

The proper address for mail to the Junkyard Pussycat is

JOHNBARNES@ENH.NIST.GOV

BITNET users may find that JOHNBARNES@NBSENH works. UUCP users are on their
own, although there are surely a number of ways.

Message-ID: <6072@umd5.umd.edu>

I've been having a very annoying problem using the Shadow 1.1 desk accessory/
background file transfer driver (i.e., either one).

Whenever I go to send a file, it keeps resetting the baud rate to 9600 baud.
I thought at first this was a conflict with some auto prg or .acc, but I tried
it with a clean slate, so to speak (with the exception of poolfix3.prg and
tosfix.prg). So, then I started thinking this is a TOS 1.4-related glitch.

I looked in the config file for Shadow, hoping to find a clue, but the baud
rate isn't saved in there. So far, I've been inside Flash 1.6 when I try this
(used to use alt-shift-s, but that kept erroring out, and I tried the DA and
noticed the baud rate change).

Any ideas, anyone?
