Subject: 520 ST upgrade to 2.5 Meg
Message-ID: <891229.02092991.003128@SFA.CP6>
Guy Ridley writes about having difficulty in getting chips for upgrading
his 520ST to 2.5 meg or so.
1) Can the ease of upgrading the memory be dependent on which version of
TOS I am running, or are these entirely separate issues?
Entirely separate issue... I've had a 520, 1040, and a a few
Megas upgraded. These were our lab's units and there were no problems.
My personal Mega, a really near brain dead unit, was also upgraded. These
units all span five years. No problems at all on upgrades.
2) One dealer says it will take three weeks, another says it takes an
hour (and his cost is better too.) However, after 6 weeks the chips
are not in yet. Other dealers confirm that the chips are hard to
get. There is no dealer in the S.F. Bay Area that can do the work
*now*, mainly because the chips are not available. Is this normal?
This is definitely not normal. See, folks? We used to complain
about Atari's requirements for strong technical support in each store.
3) One dealer said that in January there will be a board that will
accept plug-in memory chips. Is this really true? Will it really
be in January (1990)?
There have been boards since 1986 which allowed for the plug in
of memory chips. I would suggest raiding the magazine racks of your
local book store and pull some ST magazines and scan the ads, but
ST magazines are all but impossible to find except through subscription,
at least in my area. You might have better luck than me. There are
several boards though, at least their ads seem to be numerous.
What the SF Bay Area dealers are telling Guy astounds me and is
another sad testament to the 'quality' of many dealers. My dealer in
Fort Worth is a very small store and yet, has the ability to do such
upgrades and OTHER modifications (rack mounting, acceleration, etc.),
without much delay. His profit is up and he is quite happy. However,
he hustles and keeps up on the detail of the product. He is also
quite active in the local computer club. I really wonder if many of
the dealers are really wanting to be spoonfed by Atari and the
enthusiasts. It is just simply amazing to me that Guy's dealers are
telling him these things.
I probably would not be reacting this way if it wasn't for the fact
that my equipment, including the shop's, was upgraded or given
an overhaul this month (December). No waiting for chips, nothing. He
has an ample supply of parts. Ok, I quit. No more rambling...!

Please don't...! Any program over ?5000 bytes should not be posted to
comp.sys.atari.st which is a discussion newsgroup.
Post it to comp.binaries.atari.st which is where binaries are suppost
to be posted. If your news software doesn't know how to post to a
moderated newsgroup like comp.binaries.atari.st, email the uuencoded

time I checked anyway, was the moderator for that binaries newsgroup.

Subject: Changing Rez: What we _really_ want to know
Message-ID: <8912301917.AA19200@TIS.COM>
A bit of summary for those just tuning in:
I asked if you could change rez without the Bios. Atari's Derek Mui
said "No."
Then Neil Forsyth asked if you could restore the desktop resolution
from within a function installed at GEM process termination vector 0x102.
Allan said:
Yes. I wrote an off-the-cuff article "all about terminate handlers"
on GEnie, then asked John Townsend to post it here. I don't know if he
has, but among other things, it says you can make BIOS and XBIOS calls
but not GEMDOS calls.
Then Ken said:
Neil asks if there are magic negative-offset line A variables which can be
stuffed with appropriate values to fool GEM if an application changes res.
The answer is: No.
[AES has no published variables so you can't tell it about res changes]
Derek Mui is very wise in the ways of the AES, and when he says there
is no way, legal or illegal... believe him!
And now (me):
We believe! We believe!
OK, OK, we know you can't tell AES and GEM about the rez change. But
suppose we _don't care_ about GEM and AES and we just want the VDI/line A
to work correctly. My problem isn't with GEM or AES, but rather with the
VT52 emulator. Here's the scenario:
1) Run program from (medium rez) GULAM.
2) In program, change rez to low. AES is screwed. I don't care.
3) Process termination occurs. I switch back to medium rez
_without the Bios_.
4) GULAM thinks the screen is only 40 columns wide. Bummer.
Although Allan says you can call the Bios from within a routine installed
as process termination handler (at 0x102), I sure couldn't. Adding the
single line
Setscreen(-1L, -1L, 1);
causes my program to crash horribly.
The point is, I just want to be able to duplicate the functionality of
Setscreen without calling the Bios. Either that, or I'd like to find
out what the secret is to calling Bios routines at process termination.
Ideas?
Thanks,
Dave Baggett
(dmb@TIS.COM)
P.S.> Could some kind soul please repost the "all about terminate handlers"
article here? Thanks.

Subject: CO-Processors
Hello netters,
does anyone know something about the use of coprocessors with PC-emu-
lators? a) The co-processors in use with the atari 68000er b) The co-
processors in use with a ibm (8087,80387SX). My second questions is if
the procesors of atari are used by special atari-programs, for instance
statistical ones and which of the offered processors are any good. The
second is if these can be used with pc-emulators as ibm-coprocessors or
the same thing arround if ibm-processors can be used as well with the
atari. The last thing for today is if the blitterchip of the mega can be
built in a 1040er and if it makes emulation faster too or if there is
software arround which speeds up operation in work with atari and ibm-
emulation as well as co-processors and blitter-chip can. Think this is
enough for today and wish all of you a nice 1990. If you know something
of interest please email to so01@dmarum8.bitnet.
Thanks in advance

Message-ID: <89122619395857@masnet.uucp>
There is no problem in hooking up any monitor - providing it has a
horizontal scan frequency of 35.7kHz. The IBM one is nowhere near this,
nor are most cheap mono monitors. They are available, but won't be very
cheap; at least as much as a genuine Atari one. If you have some
electronics knowledge you can modify a monitor to work on the new
frequency, but it's a fairly extensive modification and I wouldn't do it
on one you've just bought. Alternatively you might prefer to design your
own and build it from scratch if you like that sort of thing. Mono
monitor circuitry is pretty rudimentary and quite fun to play with. But
if you just want to use it - buy an SM124!

Recently I been wondering about hooking up a MONO monitor to my ATARI
ST system, since I have only the ATARI SC1224 (Color) monitor. --- I
know I can run out and buy a ATARI SM124 (Mono) monitor and hook it up,
but I have been wondering since I own many other monitors for my
different computers, if there was a way to hook up a monitor like a TTL
one on a IBM. ---- Since I knew a lot about electronics I decided to try
a hook up to the TTL IBM monitor I have, but all I got was a black
screen. ---- Looking at the wiring I could not see why it didn't work,
unless the SYNC levels are not matched to the TTL type. ---- Does anyone
out there know how to hook up a third-party monitor to the ATARI ST?

2 somewhat related questions:
1. I would like to expand the memory of my 1040ST to 2 or 4 Mbytes. Is there
a memory expansion board that is particularly good (reliable, well-engineered)?
If so, where can I get it, and what will it cost me?
2. I recently ftp'ed TeX from terminator.cc.umich.edu, and would like to get
it running on my ST (the reason for question #1). I'm assuming that I can use
style files downloaded from our local VAX - what about fonts? If anyone has
TeX running on his/her ST, would that/those person(s) tell me what works well
in terms of subdirectories, shell setups, etc.? Is it possible to run TeX
from the desktop using SETENV?
Feel free to Email any replies; I'll summarize and post if there is interest.

My mouse is dying and I need to replace it fast. Can anyone recommend one
of the 3rd party mice (I've seen a cordless, and another one by some company
whose name slips my mind) or should I stick with the Atari. I have seen
Atari mice manufactured in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and I've heard they were
also made in Japan. Is one better than the other? I had a Tawainese one,
and it has acted up all along. I think wires are crossing inside the main
cable. The arrow moves in the opposite direction of what I want, sometimes.
I shake the cord a little, and it will work OK for a short time. Can I
cheaply replace/build a new cable?
Any info on any of the above questions would be greatly appreciated.

that is listed in the Atari control panel doesn't seem to work for me I
have not been able to find any information on this subject and I have

to how I might make it work so that I can stick back the color ribbon in
the printer and make some use of this printer. I am quite surprised
that their isn't something out there that will work as I have yet to
pick up a Atari magazine and not seen at least 1 Star color printer
advertised! I have had a 1040St since this August after selling my
Apple IIe system and have been amused by all the gripping I have seen on
this board on about Atari well let me tell you the same kind of thing
goes on in the Apple World and I can bet that the other systems have
similar beefs but the bottom line has to be that they are all in it to
make a Buck! so when you have to dish out that $100.00 for up grades
remeber that Apple users have been doing just that for years. I would
like to thank anyone in advance if they can offer me some help or
suggestions as to which program I might purchase that would have the
right printer driver in it.

A local user is looking into moving up to a Mega or a multi-meg STE for
DTP work (currently, he is using Pagestream 1.8). He wants info about
Postscript capability for laser printing.
1. Is there a PostScript board for the HP LJ IIp? If not, is there a slot
in this printer for a PS board?
2. Can UltraScript use PS fonts or is it limited to US fonts?
The user is aware of the much slower speed of the LJ IIp but does not have
high volume needs. The LJ IIp with .5 meg is $CDN 1495 and the SLM804
is almost $CDN 2000. With 4 megs of memory, it looks like the IIp would
cost as much as the SLM804 making it a better buy (except for speed).
Can anyone provide more info on this topic?

I have TOS 1.4 and was hoping that the setting of the bit would
allow me to use the archive option to back up only the files that have been
added to or modified since my last backup.
This is not the case, though. When attempting a new backup, none of
my new, added, or modified files were flagged and put in the backup
window. In fact, nothing showed up in the window at all except for a
message saying that the backup had been successful. Yeah, right...
Ok, dullard that I am, am I misinterpretating what is suppose
to be really happening? Could someone tell me the "rest of the story"?

Howdy folks,
If you are tired of the 'same old same old' joystick, give the Winner
UFO joystick a try. This is an infrared cordless mouse that looks like
a yellow version of the American Stealth bomber. It is great.
Your left thumb controls the directions via a small pressure knob and
your right contrils the fire buttons. Interestingly, there is a 'turbo'
mode which gives you rapid fire. Yep, this box gives rapid fire for the
ST.
The receiver is a big ugly yellow box about the size of a fat deck
of cards. Double adhesive tape is included so that you can attach this
thing to your computer's side.
The infrared transmitter is powerful! You do not have to be careful
to aim the stick toward the receiver at all. Indeed, I was playing Joust
from about thirty feet. Sheesh, I didn't last long. Couldn't see the
screen!
This is an impressive peripheral. Playing games while standing up
lends to strange gyrations since you are no longer strapped to a chair.
I can imagine how this thing could be via a projection tv and some
really graphics/action intensive game. Shades of Star Trek's HoloDeck!
At any rate, I'm impressed, and the the klutz in me loves the rapid
fire, something that I've never been able to get on any other joystick
for the ST.
Just thought that everyone might like to know about this one. I've
never seen it before. Oh well, back to my real world.... COBOL. sigh
