Too true, ST World is a great mag, full of in-depth reviews of hardware
and software (recently it has shown a lot of interest in American
proggies from the likes of Codehead). It's got some programming stuff,
PD bit, comms area, a page on emulation stuff, oooh and lot's of other
juicy info.
I don't entirely agree with the comments on how badly the ST market over
here is. A lot of the general *down* feeling has been generated by these
mags (ST World excluded), although I must admit the Atari UK deserved to
do badly this Christmas. I saw one telly advert about the Atari 800 games
console! None at all about the ST, while I saw the Amiga ad at least
twenty times....which would you buy?
It's about time someone at Atari UK got their finger out. All they've
done since Christmas is accuse Commodore UK of lying about sales figures
in a pathetic attempt to cover up their own abysmal results.

I have played it a lot... but I haev not solved it as some have.
I have mapped most sections... and it was not difficult at all.
Also, there are some decent maps of levels 1-10 (0-9?).
I have not had a chance to get them yet... besides, the maze here does
not seem as large as DM I [to me...]. I manage mostly by just
remembering where to go.
> Finally, my characters fell down the multiple pits in the Priest

I have been to one place that had some worms... but not a ``zillion''
Perhaps I should play some more.
My problem is that I can not get the green gem without being burnt
to a crisp. I believe iron keys at the supplies for the quick can be
used to turn off most of the fireball/lightning etc guns. My problem
is that I don't play the game too often and I haven't been able to get
back to the green gem in a while since I have used a few iron keys.
Also, if you can get on any of the ST BBSes taht are networked together...
a lot of them have a CSB message base. That is really helpful.

At work, I am pulling out 100 megabyte hard drives from IBM rt's to replace
them with 310 megabyte units. This means that we have quite a few 100 meg.
units sitting around that may be declared surplus. The drive in question is
a standard IBM-supplied RT drive - model 0699. I am told that it may be
an ESDI device. My local Atari dealer tells me that I should be able to
hook up a controller/interface from Berkerley Microsystems. He tells me
that the FaST unit from ICD is out of the question. Does anyone else have
experience with this, or have any bright ideas. I surely would love
to have a free, 20 microsecond 100 meg. hard drive to play with!
Thanks in advance

Someone at the museum is starting work on a pictorial family tree.
Does anyone know of a program that can help in this project
(preferably shareware or PD)?

Eh? It's meant to be sold for the same price as the 1040ST! The STe was
supposed to justify the price difference between 520 and 1040 models.
On a different subject, can anyone tell me about David Beckemeyer's MT-C
shell? I wrote to the man himself but he never replied (I guess he's to
busy).
Does this shell allow GEM/TOS programs to multitask? How does it handle
displaying two GEM programs? Is the program Shareware - if so where can
I obtain a copy to try out? If it is a commercial product can anyone
supply the address of a dealer that sells it?
Thanx,
Mark Davidson.

Hi,
Got problems with my hard disk. It is a Seagate 296N (SCSI), with ICD
controller and software ICDBOOT ver. 3.41. Well - before I sometimes got
a <Sense: $FF> and then it was shake, rattle, roll - suppose it recalibrated.
But now I don't anymore, instead I get a <Sense: $17> quite often and trouble
to read the stuff. What to do??? Scream?
Then some positive info: concerning OVERSCAN it is up in ver. 2.1 now,
improving all the time. I could run TurboC and Calamus without trouble in it.
It also comes with nice "photos" in STAD format how to make the hardware
fixes.
Also - heard about the new shareware GEMINI-shell? It is up on version 1.1,
some similarities with Neodesk, but quite a bit of differences too. It is
GDOS-based. A couple of fonts to select among, also it is quite interesting
because - well, you have seen these COMMAND shells, right? Well, it got one,
which runs in a GEM window among the icons - neat!
Both of these I loaded down from the German BBS Maus Munster a night or two
ago, tel. # 0251-80386. The GEMINI shell you can also get from this guy:
Gereon Steffens, Elsterweg 8, D-5000 KOLN 90, Germany. They write (in the
January issue of ST Computer, the shell is also described in the Feb. issue
of ST Magazine) that he will send it if you sent him a diskette and a stamped
envelope. I suggest you can be more generous and include a $10 bill or more,
because it really is a neat thing!
BTW - the little Atari shop in our university town has sold at least a dozen
STEs since they started to arrive in mid-December. What are you complaining
about???

I know this has been discussed, but I was wondering if anyone has the
canonical list of replacement keyboards for the ST. I'd like to put the
beast in a new box, get one of those cute curly cables for the keyboard,
and get a real keyboard.
If anyone knows of a replacement, or anyone has done one, please tell
me. If there are sufficient replies and/or requests for info, I'll summarize.
Thanx in advance.

How does Revolver compare to VDOS ( the Shareware Virtual Application
Switcher on terminator). Haven't done much with it as I only have .5meg.
When I bump to 1meg, 1'll try it (and if I use it, register it).

I find shareware to be an interesting idea. It would seem a good way to
at least get some kind of response from those who use your programs.
However, I have never myself paid a shareware fee, although I have many
shareware programs. The reason for this is that I have yet to find one I
use even on an occasional basis. I keep them about so that I can get
them to other ST people who might find them useful (a couple of the
people I have given the shareware stuff to have sent in money). I do
find it amusing that some authors seem petulant that not many people pay
their fee. I don't think that they can *expect* people to pay. As for
me, if the product is worth the money, it doesn't matter how it is
distributed.

Well, after getting my first programming degree, I looked all over for
jobs (knowing I would still be attending school, I just wanted to see
what was out there). It's basically a business programming degree, but I
looked in newspapers from other cities, trade journals, scientific trade
jounals, IEEE mags, and anything else I could find. I came to the
conclusion that there were far more jobs requiring COBOL than any other
language, and that those jobs were spread out so much that I could have
gotten a job anywhere in the country I chose. A friend of mine working
in California looked for me also, and seemed surprised that 'business'
programming and 'real' programming were totally separate departments in
most businesses, meaning that if you sent them a resume you had better
be more specific than saying you were a programmer. I found this
amusing, especially since at his company all the programmers (of every
stripe) got together anyway, despite what the company thought.

]It is possible to connect a 1084 to a 1040. The only thing you need is a
]cable with a Scart connector for the 1084 and a monitor plug for the ST.
An important note:
A friend of mine has an Amiga-monitor for his ST (using a scart
cable) and therefore I bought such a cable, too, when I got my colour
monitor. But when buying the Comodore-monitor, I was told by the dealer
that newer ones don't have the Scart-connector anymore !!!
(This surely will not affect you, Randy, but might be quite important
to others...)
I got the right cable by Voelkner Elektronik, but it had swapped red and
blue first... This might be due to the differences between STM and other
STs.
Despite this little problem an me running a hole afternoon between
several stores, my monitor works really good. And it was about $100 cheaper
than the SCM 1224 from Atari !
