Subject: archive sites
One question arises after learning of the nifty archive site at the University
of Dortmund. Are there any other European Atari archive sites out there on
the net that stock stuff other than the Usenet archives. It would be really
neat to get a direct link into the European P/D scene... I speak fluent
German, so don't worry about language barriers...

Atari cannot (I reapeat CANNOT) compete with conventional computers
since these days you can find PCs with:
- Very very low prices.
- Many and cheap expanantion options.
- Much and cheap software.
- Very very powerful (memory, disk space, MIPS, screen).
- Multiprocessing of just about any kind you can think of.
So what can they do? Except of producing cheap game systems?
I believe the only future Atari has, considering non game machines
belongs in the development of multiprocessor systems.
The ATW, if it becomes comercial product before 1995.
AND it is supported.
AND has good OS.
It would be something I would consider.
Shared memory multiprocessor systems is another area that lacks
standards, is proprietary and expencive, and thus,
Available for exploitation from companies such as Atari.
Instead, what does Atari do? They prepare for next year the release of a
computer which last year would be considered a weak entry at best
(sofware, OS, expantion options, expantion price, speed, graphics, lacking).
Who cares about it? I can play games on my ST just fine.
I hope I would be surprised by Atari.

As a proud new owner of the TOS 1.4 ROM set, I'm a little apprehensive
about installing them given all this talk about weak drivers and such.
(I'm also lazy.) I hit upon the idea of copying the TOS roms into a
PROM programmer and making a higher density, 2-ROM chip from the 6-ROM
set that I bought. It seems like it should be fairly straignt
forward. I should be OK from a copyright/legal standpoint as long as
I continue to hang on to my original 6 ROM set. (I believe this would
be equivalent to making a backup copy.) What I need to know is what
is the common device number used for the 6-ROM set, what is the common
device number for the 2-ROM set, and is there a pin compatible EPROM
version of the 2-ROM device number. I could try to stare at the PC
board and figure it out myself, or better, try to find a schematic,
but I though I'd ask here because I suspect some people may know
off-hand.

PS: It just occurred to me that this whole plan could backfire if the
total amount of code stored in the 6-ROM set is larger than the size
of the higher density ROMs, perhaps this is why nobody has discussed
this idea here. If this is the case, it will become obvious to me
once I know what the part numbers are. For now, I presume Atari went
with the lower density parts because they were cheaper.

Subject: Problems booting w/accessories...
I've got many disks with accessories, AUTO programs, etc. Sometimes
when I boot up with such a floppy (I'd guess about 10% of the time) I
get the computer loading a few of the accessories, but then doing a
cold or warm boot in the middle. It's like someone hitting the reset
switch during bootup before the GEM Desktop appears.
I use the BICLOCK.PRG program that came with Thunder! to set the time,
and sometimes I have to set the clock 3 or 4 times because after setting
it, the computer starts over.
I also "follow the rules" (i.e. no more than 6 *.ACC's, only *.PRG
files in my AUTO folder, etc.) The main problem occurs with my
1st Word disk, in which I have in my AUTO folder the BICLOCK.PRG and
IDLE12.PRG, and my accessories are CALENDAR.ACC, THUNDER.ACC,
SIRAM.ACC (ramdisk - not set, and printer spooler - 64K). I've also
got 1 Meg so memory might no be the problem. Anyone else have this
happen frequently?
