Subject: adding a 68881
Thanks for the replies to my posting asking for 68881 add-on
info. The machine I intend adding the coprocessor to is a
recent 1040STFM. It has two ROM chips, surface mounted GLUE
and MMU chips and the 68000 is positioned below the keyboard
space bar. It has been upgraded to 2M ram. I understood a
German company (Lischa Datentechnik, Hochstrasse 22, 4173
Kerken 2) produced a board that was stuck ontop of the 68000,
it sounded suitable, I wrote to them but no reply came. If
any one knows about Lischa & the 68881 please elaborate. I
tried to get a Third Coast CMI accelerator board, ordered it
in june, they cashed the cheque, they still havent sent the
board, despite having advertised its existance for months. I
phoned them, they said 'ready in two weeks' .....four weeks
ago. I am not happy with Third Coast's service.
In reply to Wolfgang Hecht's enquiry about ST
Fortrans, the only Fortran I am familiar with is by Prospero.
It is well documented, has a good debuger, and produces code
that runs 20KWhetstone/s double precision 50KWhetstones single
precision (and 200KWhetstones for both precisions with the
68881). Both single and double precision use the IEEE floating
point format. About the only gripe I have against it is the
rather slow compile and link times and the slow editor screen
manipulation (much improved with turbo ST 1.6).

Sorry, the virus is really CP/M text file format, which ends lines of text
in a CR-LF (0x0D/0x0A). My bet is that you're on a UNIX system, and something
on there is "smart" enough to convert those end-of-lines to UNIX end-of-lines,
which are simply LF (0x0A). How are you decoding the program?

Subject: laser printer vs. hard drive
I have a mega-4, atari laser printer, and external hard drive (Supra card).
Apparently when I boot with the laser printer attached it must be turned on;
otherwise I can't access the hard drive. If I turn the printer off after I
boot I have trouble accessing both the hard drive and the floppy. It's a
real pain to swap cables to bypass the laser printer. I talked to a dealer
who said that this was "normal behavior".
So:
1. Is there any danger to the laser printer if I leave it on while I'm using
the mega? The system is usually on about 8 hours a day, seven days a week.
2. Is there any switch available which will allow me to use the machine
with the laser printer still attached but turned off?
3. Is there anything else I can try?

This is to all users of MiniTerm - All else may abort now !
A friend of mine got tired of editing MINITERM.INF in a text-editor and
made a smart program called SETUP to configure MiniTerm....
This program is now posted to panarthea and will be available soon....
With this program it should be "piece of cake" to setup MiniTerm...

To Antony:
I would be very interested in such a protocol to send files, we
have narrowed down the problem to a 'brain-dead' gate along the route.
If such a protocol would go through this gateway then the problem
would be solved. I tried to e-mail you directly but failed, if
possible send me e-mail. __ ___ __ __ _ __ __

Does anyone have an address for the panarthea.ebay.sun.com archive? My site
doesn't seem to have it listed in the hosts file.

ps. Anybody ever notice that ST & TOS stand for Star Trek and The Original
Series, respectively? Was this a total coincidence or was Atari trying
to get some Trekkers ?Trekkies, whatever!? to buy the ST?

1. PD wordprocs
The attitude that it is nuts to pay more than $100 for software is the
reason why there is not the same level of quality in much of the STware as
there is in Macware. As I said on the NET before, if you want good codes,
with good support, you have to pay for it UNLESS you find individuals like
Simon Poole (UNITERM author) who develop exceptional PD codes. Strange as it
may be, lots of people want to make money selling software; if they cannot,
be prepared for a machine that has a limited selection of good codes.
2. VT emulator
Forget the EMULATOR.ACC and get Simon Poole's UNITERM. UNITERM is the best
ST emulator for the price (free). IMHO, it's the best at any price (no
flames please).

I personally have never heard of a Stacy4 with 4 megs of RAM and an internal
hard drive, until I saw it at the Fest.
There is some problem with the local editor and what terminal type it thinks
I'm using, so some of the lines from your old message seem to have disap-
peared. Your definition of Vaporware is... well, not what I would consider
OK. The STacy isn't vaporware. It is unavailable. Vaporware means, to me,
the product doesn't exist in any form.

The TT etc. were absent (I'm a little upset at that too). Atari wasn't there
to sell anything (they seldom, if ever, SELL anything at a show, just demo
stuff). The new stuff they showed, aside from the STacy4, was the Portfolio
and a Megafile 60 (not very exciting, but it IS new).

I'd rather have a computer designed for an '030. The Mega is too closed an
architecture to allow any good to come from putting an 030 in there (compared
to a real 030 machine).

If I didn't now better, I'd say someone else wastrying to type into this

One question I wish you'd ask yourself is this:
what good is all this complaining doing?

As for your question, yes! You can order Portfolio from the same line as
you called for information or you can order it from any of the speciality
dealers that are currently carrying the product.
For your closest Portfolio dealer, call the toll free 800 number listed
above.
As for the service, thanks for the comments.. I will pass them along to
the tired Portfolio Group (Boy are they busy!)..

OK, I know everyone is going to be sick to their stomachs at seeing
this question, so do us all a favor and reply by MAIL only.
What new features does TOS 1.4 offer? I have the Mega ROMs in my
souped-up 520ST (double sided drive and 1 meg memory expansion).
How much does it cost and where would it be preferable to get it
from? I got the Mega ROM upgrade from a dealer on six chips, which
I popped in myself in 10 minutes.
Basically, is it worthwhile doing this upgrade?
