This is **NOT** true at all. I have gone though 3 generations of Tos 1.4
releases (developers disk based Tos 1.4, the ?feb eprom one, and now
the real one) without re-formatting anything. heck one of the drives
i am still using was formatted pre-mega-tos, and still has'nt given me a
single problem.

What's UN*X? I am on a VAX w/VMS. The preblem with ARC'ed filed is as

don't think the system does. As far as I can tell, when I call from

I beg to differ with _your_ observations Ken. My observations using a Mega ST
with TOS 1.2 and 1.4 with and without the blitter, with and without different
software accelerators. I don't disagree that Turbo ST runs faster with the
blitter chip, since it checks for and uses the blitter, but the speed increases
are far from being "_much_ faster". I'd use that term to apply to the speed
increase obtained by using Turbo ST alone, and the term "_slightly_ faster"
to describe the additional speed increase that the blitter gives you. Hope
you're not trying to sell us some vaporware blitter chips <grin>. Someone
else did mention that "your mileage will vary" but you have yet you convince
me that the blitter chip can significantly outperform tightly coded assembler
code in real life situations (not rigged Comdex demos).
Why not just apply some of the same types of optimizations that Turbo ST uses
in the next version of TOS? I'm sure there were better things to do with time
and code than putting rainbows into the desktop.

I wasn't aware that Neochrome supports variable resolutions. Somebody
actually thought ahead was back in 1985? :-) I have also received
some email about the IMG format also supporting variable resolution. The
question still remains, what format will Atari and/or developers decide to
make the standard on the new machines (and Hyperscreen modified STs)? Or
will this be a wait and see situation? And how with the Getrez() function
work on the new machines?

ok, then, make it bit 14. :-)

Actually, what I do is:
1) On my UNIX workstation at work I put all the uuencoded parts in a single
file of mailbox format
2) uud the file
3) doswrite the file using the 3.5 floppy drive on my UNIX box
4) Take it home an copy it my atari

To: info-atari16@score.stanford.edu

Hello,
I am trying to port MINIX to a 68K coprocessor card (homebrew)
that plugs into a PC. Hmm.
I would like to use the Sozobon compiler. So, some questions:

1. What is the latest version of the compiler suite?
2. Where/who do I contact to obtain it?
3. Has it been ported to a UNIX-like system?

Sorry for posting to the group, I guess I just need a pointer to
someone in the know. I tried Dale Schumaker, but my mail did not
get through (Our site has had some upheaval recently).

Many thanks in advance,
Des Young.

Apologies for posting this here, direct replies bounced.

Sorry, you're too late for any of the DILs, just 20 of the zigzags and
a few data books left. Seems most people thought they'd be too late if
they weren't in the UK, but half the free ones are going to Sweden.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained...

To: info-atari16@score.stanford.edu

I finally tried to use the last version of << GNU AWK >> that came down
the pike to do some global text search and delete (since FOLDED 0.9e
lacks the ability to search and replace control codes).

I quickly review what I needed in the book << The AWK Programming
Language >> and tried the following:

? gsub( /_\b/, "" ); print ?

This was meant to globally search and delete all undersorce-backspace
combinations (I'm stripping a formatted file of cude underlining and
other code that mess up my printer).

However AWK keeps giving me an "error near line 1" and quotes just
about the whole line. What's wrong?

I don't even know the diffs between << GNU AWK >> and the implementation
described in the above book. There was no documentation. All I remember
was a comment or a small readme that said I should get a copy of my UNIX
version's man page. Was there any docs with << GNU AWK >> and if so are
not my rights to it being abused by not providing it (as mentioned in
every GNU COPYING & LICENSE notice)?

I think Atari has their hands more than full with the emminent releases
of TOS 1.4, Portfolio, Lynx, STacy, and the TT! Perhaps their strategy
with the Lynx is to let Nintendo corner the market again and then sue
them for having a monopoly. <grin>

Well folks, after my two days of work and two days at the dealer my TOS 1.4
equipped Mega 2 is now running FLAWLESSLY. The HD needed to be rebooted
and all my programs were restored from original floppies (not the HD back
up which failed to work for some reason.) I also discovered that my bombs
that were happening on the color monitor are *most likely* attributed to the
game's copy protection - NOT the TOS ROMs because I've seen a few posts
from people who had problems with the same two titles even under TOS 1.2.
I give TOS 1.4 a big Thumbs Up and recommend it - the differences ARE
noticable and pleasant - I just wish that I had a clue as to why my problems
happened as they did. Another Strong Recommendation for Atari is to provide
some documentation with the TOS 1.4 upgrade, not even my dealer knew

Well something went wrong with my first posting (only the .sig got out), so
I'll try again:

This is a known and documented bug having something to do with virtual
files. It was discovered it many, many months ago. It has been reported to
WordPerfect and it has been fixed IN THE LATEST VERSION. This bug only
occurs in the 1988 version. But, if you report having problems with this
bug, you will get the 1989 version sent to you FREE (otherwise you will have
to pay WordPerfect $17.50 to ``upgrade'' to the 1989 version).
