Yes, I can confirm that. I'm not a registered developer myself, but I
know two people on my campus who are. Neither has TOS 1.4. Neither
has mentioned to me receiving any of the items mentioned by Neil.

At our university there are literally hundreds of STs. They are very
nearly great machines, and when the bulk of our purchases were made
the ST had great promise. Over the years, though, we've become more
and more disillusioned with Atari as a company. Unless Atari UK can
show more commitment to users there will either be a gradual move away
to other machines or there decisions will be taken to replace whole
batches of STs with something from another company.

The $64,000 question (I suspect I'm not the only one who wonders):

Did you do a comparison between the developer EPROM release and the
"real" one? Are they indeed the same?

This symptom is typical of a known ST virus.

Get out your favorite virus detect/kill utility and start checking
your disks. This virus (if that's what it is) resides on the boot sector
of floppy disks only. It does not corrupt files, damage disks, or destroy
anything except disks which must have their own executable boot sectors.
Those disks are rendered useless since the virus overwrites the boot sector
with itself.

Subject: Re: Steinberg's Twelve Sequencer
To: info-atari16@score.stanford.edu

I have been using Twelve for about 3 months, and already have found
lots of limitations for the sort of things I'd like to do. However, I
am a semi-professional (semi-amateur?) keyboardist with Load's-O-Sounds
(tm), and more virtual modules than I can access from 16 MIDI channels.
For your purposes, it sounds like a good deal. In post's about this
software, there were a couple of discrepancies that I noticed, however:

1) The program will run sequences and patterns at the same time.
The difference between a pattern and a sequence is that a pattern
is a unique "block" of MIDI information over a specific amount of
"music" time (a beat, a measure, a chorus, etc.), that can be
*copied* to another portion of the song. A sequence is a block
that is *referred* to by the software during execution. Hence, a
sequence can have one copy in memory, but can be played several
times in different locations of a song. A pattern, in contrast,
takes up proportionately as much memory as the number of times it
is played. OK? The big deal with this is that lots of Big Bucks
sequencers base the "play list" of sequences in a song so that only
one list at a time can be active. This means that your drums have
to follow the same sequence as your lead instruments, bass, etc.
The Twelve will only play one sequence, but not all tracks
have to be following the sequence, so you can use the sequence for
just drums, and use patterns for your more melodic parts. Oh,
sure, this isn't clear, but you get what you pay for.

2) The manual is impossible to use as a reference. I still can't
find information without a good 10 minutes of page-by-page browsing.
Not to mention that the binding (one of those one piece plasic jobs)
is too small for the size of the manual, and the punch holes are too
small, and there are several features that are completely undocument-
ed, and blahblahblahblahblah. The usual.

3) List in the good ol' USA is currently $89.00. Formerly $69.00.
Again, you get what you pay for. I didn't realize when I got it
that the ONLY real time MIDI data you could edit was Note data...
A big deal to me, maybe not to you. Also, twelve channels get
used up quick, especially when you need one to control the sequence,
and you can't combine tracks, and blahblahblahblahblah....

Personally, I'd check out all the entry level MUSIC stuff (as opposed
to the TOY stuff like Music Studio...they generally only handle certain
types of MIDI data, and are in the same rough price bracket). If you
decide you like Twelve, send me E-Mail. I probably won't be hanging on
to it all that much longer, and I won't lie to you about what it can and
can't do. Hybrid Arts, Dr. T's, and Passport all make stuff under $100,
although I didn't check any out personally aside from Twelve.
I can tell you that if absolutely none of the above made a bit of
sense to you, that you'd probably like Twelve. Oh, and it doesn't support
MIDI Standard File Protocol, and there are known bugs, and blahblahblah...

Doug

Where did I put that darn disclaimer? It was here just a minute ago!
Darn! Well, here's a quickie for posterity...

Nope. No responsibiltiy here. None at all. And we won't have any
next week either, so don't think you can come back. Try that place
down the street, the place that sells IBM clones...

Hi,
I just put a MAXTOR EXT-4380 380 megabyte ESDI drive with an
Emulex MD21/S2 controller on my system. The previous drive
was a WREN 85 meg SASI using a Xebec 1410A controller. After
much trouble trying to get the drive to autoboot (using SUPRA
V2.6 ? forrmatter and driver) I finally started remembered
an artical posted (years?) ago about removing the reset line going
to the controller. That did it! I guess that the Atari BIOS
tries just 1 read to determind if there's a drive out there or
not, and acording to the SCSI spec, a drive will give a 'Check
Status' condition upon the first read/write attempt after the reset
has been asserted. Well so much for that, the reason I'm posting
this is that I also put TOS 1.4 into my system (well worth it!).
Well the TOS 1.0 would only allow 16 meg partions and I understand
that TOS 1.4 will allow 32 megs. Using the old formatter only lets
me use ?160 megs of the drive. Is there any (PD ?) utilities out
there that will let me re-initialize me drive to let me use 32 meg
partitions ??
Well THANX in advance.

can get one, how much it costs and whether you have had any
favorable or unfavorable experiences using this product.
Thanks.

there are differences between the feb eprom version and the final TOS 1.4

there are **supposed** to be no differences between the developers
Tos 1.4 roms (that is what i have, and despite all their denials,
atari shipped me eproms and not roms, but i am not complaining), and
the production Tos 1.4.

my $68K question is has anyone received the Tos 1.4 docs. when
we were purchased the developers Tos 1.4 final release, we filled all
kinds of questionares and forms, and were promised the release notes
in exchange for them. this was a few months ago.

BTW: will someone from atari please tell us who designed the Spf<whatever>
68881 hardware interface? I would like to send some flames his/her way for not
using their brains.

Here it is, finally: My reset-resident, Mega4-proof PD RAM disk !

It works just like Eternal2, except that it is a lot nicer, uses less
memory (for the same specified size), and works MUCH FASTER. It should
work with all systems and all TOS versions (haven't tested it on a TT yet :-)
Some messages might come out a little weird on low resolution, however.

Please read the instructions contained in the file EDISK.DOC *before* you
attempt to use the RAM disk.

Included are EDISK21.PRG (the program), ECONF21.TOS (the setup utility)
and EKILL21.PRG (an automagic RAM disk killer).

This is all pd. Have fun with it.

Send all praises, flowers, money orders, letter bombs etc to
