Marissa Mayer plans to convert a mortuary into private club for women
Marissa Mayer plans to convert the Mortuary building at 980 Middlefield Road into a private club for female workers. It will offer working spaces, networking events, speaker series, conference rooms, a small gym, a gallery, coffee and snacks.
The property, that will be renamed The Corner House, will host about 150 members and guests at any time, with the possibility to host up to 400 people for special events.
The Roller & Hapgood & Tinney mortuary is Palo Alto's oldest funeral home after opening in 1951. Marissa Mayer bought it five years ago. At that time she faced criticism from neighbors for hosting Halloween parties at the property. One anonymous neighbor posted an open letter in 2014, asking Mayer to stop
"Your neighbors, your community, your friends have had to deal with some of the saddest and hardest experiences in their lives, in the exact spot where you will now be celebrating. Not only is it disrespectful to the memory of our loved ones, it's confusing and upsetting to the community at large who lost their loved ones and grieved there."
The Marissa Mayer plan will be considered by the City Council in Sept. 10 2018.
