Playstation 2 Head cleaning
The easy thing to do is to clean the top (floating) lens with a soft cloth and isopropylic alchohol. This improves reading, but if the lens under the floating one is dirty, the head still does not read as it could .
Below there is a procedure of thorough head cleaning. It should be performed with caution, since the head's mechanic parts are VERY sensitive.
THIS MAY RESULT A NOT WORKING PS2 IF ITS NOT DONE WITH PRECISION!!
Step 1:
Turn off the ps2 with the tray open. Remove the top cover of the PS2 (carefull with the keys-lights ribbon cable).Open the Drive by removing the four screws at its corners. Remove the screw at the end of the right rail.
Step 2:
Remove the right rail by lifting the far end and pulling it out of the head's holes.
Step 3:
Lift the head as shown and unclip the ribbon cable by pulling the brown clip down a the points where the green arrows indicate.
Step 4:
Having the head at hand push the plastic head cover where the green arrows indicate and pull it upwards.
FROM NOW ON THE HEAD SHOULD BE TREATED WITH MUCH ATTENTION since its very fragile.
Step 5:
Turn the head Upsidedown and unscrew the two torq screws (the ones in the green and yellow circles).
This will seperate the head in two!
Step 6:
With the Head split in two, clean the low large lens (yellow arrow) with the pad and the alchohol and spray air where the green arrows show. ****when spraying the bottom size of the floating lens hold it ,with the other hand, in place or the air will bend the wires that hold the lens in place destroying the head
Step 7:
Reassemble the head again. The screws that hold the head together can adjust the floating lens position so center them as good as possible. Put the Black plastic cover back and install the head on the rails again and clip the ribbon cable. Fasten the right rail's screw again.
Step 8:
Clean the top of the floating lens last with the pad and the alchohol and apply a drop of oil on the rail.
Step 9 (Optional):
Before screwing the drive's cover, plug the ps2 and try a game that did not work fine and adjust the screw and the cog to obtain a better alignment of the head.
The head's floating lens should be parallel with the disc and those two things tilt the head as needed.
Usually the best position is not away more than 60 degrees on the screw and a couple of clicks on the cog!
Step 10:
Reassemble the PS2 and try it!
