Reproduction of Aplocheilus Lineatus.
The Aplocheilus Lineatus was imported in Europe for the first time back in 1909. Due to its alleged aggressiveness and its size, this fish did not conquer the sympathy of the aquarists.
The Aplocheilus is a surface fish. To make it feel at ease it is common to put some floating plants on the water surface, in the middle of which the fish lays his eggs. These fish have a beautiful color very difficult to describe, the picture shows it!
Males have a variable color livery, while females maintain a simple brown coloration. Recently are available on the market albino variations.
Aplocheilus Lineatus is a fish without too many needs, easy to breed but with a bad habit: jump out of the pool with powerful leaps, so pay attention and properly cover the top of the aquarium.
Reproduction takes place, as already said, in the middle of roots of the floating plants or plants with long and thin leaves, like for example Vallisneria.
At each deposition the female lays a single rather large egg. Various depositions follows for a few days and although these fishes are not real predators of eggs, it is better to transfer the parents in another aquarium after the deposition.
The temperature must remain at 24-26 °C, in order to get a hatch within 12-14 days.
Freshly hatched Artemia can be used as a first food, after about 10-12 days it is possible to add powdered feed for fry.
Since the fertilized eggs are always few, it is good idea to add one anti-mycotic, in order to avoid the formation of mold on the eggs.
A good hatch can even bring out fifty fry.
