As in the books, in most of the episodes Hercule Poirot is investigating on a crime, to identify the murder, but most of them have great differences from Christie's original novels.
For example in the movie Third Girl the story is quite different from the one in the book. Here the painting has a marginal role while in the novel it is extremely important.
