The Gainax project envisaged immediately also the manga version of Evangelion, in addition to the anime. However, the story of the Evangelion manga varies quite considerably compared to that of the anime, although of course it shares the main structure with it. The Evangelion manga turns out to be a shortened and simplified version of the anime. In the manga Gainax tried to give more prominence to some specific aspects of the narrative (sometimes also adding some completely new passages) to the detriment of others (such as the parts of psychological introspection), in order to differentiate it a little from the animated version.

The realization of the manga version of Evangelion, both for the texts and for the drawings, was entrusted to Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, former Character Designer of the animated series. It follows that the style of the drawing, in a comparison between anime and manga, does not undergo particularly relevant variations. If the anime could be considered as the result of the emotional and intellectual dimension of Hideaki Anno, the manga therefore constitutes a version of Evangelion "revised and filtered" according to the personal sensitivity of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto.
