... erase his Earthly influence using the Torquasm Vo mind control technique. Of course, we saw Superman learn how to use this when he battled Dominus in #88, so he's not about to just roll over for the Eradicator. Clad in psychic armor, they duke it out in the theta state... Meanwhile, Perry finally lectures Jimmy Olsen about digitally removing the wedding ring from a photo of Superman. Perry gives him a chance to learn from this mistake, and warns him that advances in photomanipulation have given Jimmy a power he has to use wisely. Perry also notes that if he had been aware of Superman's wedding ring, he still wouldn't have given it the same hype ...

... e _Superman: King of the World_, pure and simple, and there's very little here to give this installment any value on its own. Compare that with issue #88, which stood alone pretty well, and #89 which happened to feature an important plot twist. At least Schultz manages to throw us a few goodies on the way. Superman may be desperately preparing for a battle we all know won't happen in this issue, but at least he's being realistic and methodical in his strategy. The nod to his Kryptonian roots was a nice way to tide over our imaginations while we wait for S:KOTW to come out. Let's not forget the swell artwork either. Mahnke gives us two superhero ...

... r Don Cameron left the strip in 1948, other writers just couldn't seem to work up the same level of enthusiasm. His last big splash was in _Superman_ #88 in March 1954, when he joined Luthor and the Prankster as "The Terrible Trio". After a cameo in _Jimmy Olsen_ #9 he was gone, phased out in favor of the space aliens, monsters, and "imaginary stories" that formed the staples of the Weisinger era. He did try for a comeback in _Superman_ #182 in January 1966, in a Leo Dorfman scripted 8-pager with art by Curt Swan, done probably to promote the _Superman Giant_ released the same month in which Golden Age stories were reprinted for the very first t ...

... uring the "Bizarro's World" arc (_Superman_ #87, _Adventures of Superman_ #510, _Action Comics_ #697, _Superman: The Man Of Steel_ #32 and _Superman_ #88 -- also in trade paperback). Luthor continues to manipulate even while dying. While Lois Lane tries to find evidence of Luthor's murder of Sasha, he arranges to have her apartment torched and to have her fired from the Daily Planet (_Adventures Of Superman_ #512, _Action Comics_ #699). In searching for a cure, he infiltrates the Cadmus Project and starts a war between the Underworlders (monster shaped clones), the Special Crimes Unit, Team Luthor and just about everyone else. ... But we all know that will never happen. The Prankster had a long career, outlasting several artists and writers. His final appearance was in SUPERMAN #88 in March of 1954 (a team-up with Luthor and the Toyman) just months before the introduction of the Comics Code Authority. Stripped of his ability to murder people, the Prankster just didn't seem to fit in to the safe suburban Superman mythos of the fifties. He wasn't a scientist, so he couldn't whip up science fiction contraptions to menace Metropolis with. He wasn't a particularly deep thinker, so he couldn't hoodwink Superman with some incredible plot to make him do his bidding (the most prev ...

... erman met the Joker, but Batman never met Luthor?" The two villains have joined forces several times against the heroes, originally in WORLD'S FINEST #88, and at least twice after the Crisis (in the Gibbons/Rude WORLD'S FINEST mini- series and in UNDERWORLD UNLEASHED). Indeed, Luthor was the villain in at least one Batman story without Superman: "The Hand from Nowhere," by Bill Finger and "Bob Kane" (ghosted by Shelly Moldoff) in BATMAN #130 (1960). **** My take on this question (and I'm sure Joe can correct me if I'm wrong) was that we've seen the Joker drop in on Superman without Batman showing up in the story on several occasions. Yet I c ...
