... I like to think of what I wrote as a novel. AW: I've read that your first comic book story, "What Can One Man Do?", which appeared in _Green Lantern_ #86, was originally a term paper for a course in American Media. What point were you making in your term paper, and how did it relate to the theme of the story? ES!M: "What Can One Man Do?" was actually the largest part of that particular term paper. It was a course on American history, for a section on media. The point I was making was that a comic book story, effectively directed, could be not just an entertainment but an ideological tool as well. I wanted to illustrate that the comic book medium ...

... T II Greetings, readers, and welcome back to the somewhat-delayed Part Two of "Oh Yes He Can..." -- a response and rebuttal to an article in _Wizard_ #86 (October 1998) titled "Clark Can't". Part One of this rejoinder ran in our October issue (KC #55) where your two Editors addressed the first four topics that _Wizard_ raised: 'Stories, Not Events', 'Rogues Gallery', 'Supporting Cast', and 'Powers'. Without further adieu, then, let us continue the examinations and explanations as we assess the validity of _Wizard_'s remaining six points. ROMANTIC TENSION ================ (Jeff's Opinions) _Wizard_ really exposes how little they understand about ...

... o determine what exactly has gone wrong and how to correct those problems. The result was an article entitled "Clark Can't" that appeared in _Wizard_ #86 (October 1998). At the surface, their primary conclusion is unmistakably accurate: "DC Comics has tried to sustain the Man of Steel's success with stunts and events rather than solid stories." Of course, simply stating that conclusion would make for a rather short article, so _Wizard_ expanded on that idea, enumerating in ten categories, "...what makes Superman great, how he has strayed from these points, and how [they'd] steer the Man of Steel back in the right direction." As usual, though, th ...

... ontinuity, um, immediately post-Crisis. The story I'm covering this month came in just under the wire, literally. This was DC PRESENTS #85, and issue #86 was the Crisis crossover. This issue featured one of the very last appearances of the pre-Crisis, really-super Superman. Alan Moore was the acclaimed writer of SWAMP THING at the time. He recreated and rejuvenated Swamp Thing, whom I liked prior to Moore's run. Nonetheless, Moore certainly changed him for the better. However, not much of Moore's influence is present in this story, even though Moore himself wrote it. Of course, the book *is* about Superman. The story begins with a sickly Man of ...
