... ew version of the character had replaced the old one. Wisely, the editors at DC chose to ignore this issue. It wasn't until 1969 and _Justice League_ #73 that the Superman of Earth-2 made his first appearance. It wasn't until _All Star Comics_ itself was revived in 1976 that any information was really provided about this version of Superman. If there was going to be an Earth-2 Superman, somehow he should be differentiated from the current version. The distinctions that were decided upon were all artificial and ahistorical. It was decided to use the Fred Ray Superman chest symbol on his costume, rather than the Wayne Boring version, even though b ...

... mythos was firmly in place by 1969, and Schwartz and new JLA scribe Denny O'Neil were looking for a new Justice Society character to revive in _JLA_ #73. Everybody in the old membership had made at least a cameo in the new series, save for two -- Superman and Batman. So, the cover of that issue (by Joe Kubert) depicted the Justice Society guest-stars for that issue, and featured prominently with his peers Dr. Mid-Nite, Dr. Fate, Green Lantern, Starman, and Wonder Woman was the Superman of Earth-Two. There was no meeting of Earth-crossing heroes in this issue, as it was just a tale told by the Red Tornado of the JSA's ruinous meeting with the li ...

... or Jimmy Olsen to air a show promising a big revelation about Superman. His trial and successful defence are delivered with aplomb in _Action Comics_ #737. Ever ruthless, Luthor reveals all to his scrupulous and honest lawyer, and then reminds the lawyer that his admission is protected by client-attorney privilege. But the most interesting change in Luthor's character comes from the birth of his daughter, Lena, in _Superman_ #131. Dan Jurgens delivers one of the best Luthor stories to date (all my opinion, of course). Today's Luthor is very complex and multi-faceted, which has only been enhanced by making him a loving, devoted father (with one t ...

... stories. I'd give it a 7.7, but someone would probably get upset. ST: 4.3 Shields - I lamented DC's treatment of Ray Palmer in my review of _Action_ #734, and am thrilled to see him restored to his previous status as a scientist; let's hope it sticks. I'd have given high marks for that alone: the wonderful story was an unexpected bonus. Mark Waid has defied the odds. He's taken a '60s-style story, added '90s sensibilities and a compelling moral dilemma, and even guest-starred the Atom without degenerating into corny dialogue, preachiness, or camp. It is, in fact, one of the most enjoyable issues of JLA to date. As you may remember, several JLA ...

... ========== JS: The *worst* cover on a Triangle Title was also a 'Big Head' -- only it showed up six months earlier. Saviour's forehead (from _Action_ #735) with the "S"-shield branded into it, was absolutely gruesome. Why they insist on doing this every time Saviour shows up, I simply can't guess. ST: I didn't mind that one so much; I agree that it was gruesome, but at least it wasn't an affront to the senses -- unlike MOS #72. This shot of Superman being held by Mainframe and his gang nearly blinded me when I first looked at it. Combining the worst aspects of forgettable characters, Bog's cartoony style and Janke's heavy inks, this cover just s ...
