... /stories/9909/17/index.htm). After Mark Millar's departure, Templeton will write a few issues of the animated title, including issues #40, #43, and #44. Issue #40 is the story of a certain white dog from Krypton, though Templeton warns, "Not what you think though." Beyond that, #43 deals with how Superman's presence affects the criminal element and #44 shows the first appearance of the Manhunter from Mars in the DCU animated titles (outside of _Adventures in the DCU_, which he claims nobody counts anyway). Sounds good to me. DC 2000 DC has unveiled plans for a 96-page _Secret Files and Origins Guide to the DC Universe 2000_. The ...

... Dell return with issue #34, to begin Morrison's final story arc (which according to editor Dan Raspler, will probably conclude with issue #39, maybe #40), an epic that promises to leave plenty of changes and victims in its wake, as the team squares off against the deadly Mageddon. Let us hear, or rather read, the words from Waid's own mouth on what he plans to do with the JLA: "Since I don't smear peyote on my morning bagel, it'll be tough to sustain the sheer barrage of weird inventiveness Grant brought to the book, but I'll do my level best. I wouldn't look for any radical changes in approach, but I think my own strength is in exploring the c ...

... product of one of the few comic writers I hold in less esteem than Dan Jurgens, Danny Fingeroth (who, to be fair, wrote the outstanding _Spider-Man_ #400). Yet while Fingeroth's mediocrity shines through, it's not that terrible and ends up being one of the highlights of the book. Clark Kent is suddenly worried about a comic strip called Captain Tomorrow, in which a staff artist for The Daily Criterion is secretly Cosmopolis' greatest hero. Captain Tomorrow, while only being published in the Planet for a month, has become wildly popular -- so popular a child mistakes Supes for the comic strip hero after a rescue! Clark confronts the aged artist, ...

... nts and illusions to madden and confuse Superman. He reveals himself when Superman figures out that it must be Brainiac (_Superman: The Man Of Steel_ #40 and _Superman_ #96). The storyline concludes in _Adventures of Superman_ #513. Brainiac reanimates "dead Superman" saying, "unlike some of my other attacks, this one does not depend on your belief for its success". Brainiac's power drives this one. Brainiac also attacks Superman personally. But when Superman tells Brainiac that he is only Milton Fine and smashes Brainiac's forcefield, the villain, looking disoriented, collapses, mumbling that no one defeats Brainiac. When Brainiac regains consc ...

... he couldn't contain, like Lois' niece, Susie. The first "villain" team-up Superman ever faced was Mxyztplk and Susie Thompkins (the story in SUPERMAN #40 that I mentioned above that actually warranted having a cover designed specifically for it.) Superman did occasionally fight a super-powered enemy, like the Powerstone enhanced Luthor or the original Metallo, but these stories were few and far between, the editors assuming readers would find a steady diet of slug fests boring. Why Olsen wasn't used in the comic book more often is a mystery to me. He was featured on the radio frequently, and appeared occasionally in the newspaper strip. Perhaps ...
