Subject: Needed: dictionary

We're looking for dictionaries (English or otherwise) that have been
formatted. I've got the Collins and Webster's 7th, but I'd like to find
a version that isn't raw. We're also looking for French, Spanish, and
German dictionaries. Any info would be appreciated.

[Note: We are really just about done here working on cleaning up
the Collins dictionary. If our computers stay up, we should be
able to get final sorting and checking done within a few weeks, and
will mail that version back to Oxford Text Archive. How about
comments on other efforts? Will someone report on the Century
project and ASCIIDD? - Ed]

Among other parts to our visual courseware system, we're writing a
text display/browser that can pop up another display/browser on a word
hit. A number of our projects are encyclopedic dictionaries, and I'd
like the default condition to search a "standard" dictionary.

[Note: please send in a more complete description if available
in machine readable form. I believe there are many people at
universities who don't know about latest efforts at Athena, and
would especially like to know what is available for use besides X. - Ed]

on
Expert Systems Technology in the ADP Environment
to be held in
Washington, D.C.
November 2-3, 1987

THE CONFERENCE

The Naval Regional Data Automation Center in Washington, D.C., the Oak
Ridge National Laboratory, and the Data Systems Research and Development
Program, Martin Marietta Energy Systems are hosting a conference; its
primary focus is on the use of Artificial Intelligence in traditional computing
domains and its potential for further exploitation. Both invited talks and
contributed papers will be given at the conference.

INVITED SPEAKERS

Several individuals have tentatively accepted invitations to speak at
this conference on the various aspects of Artificial Intelligence as it
pertains to traditional computing problems. Scheduled speakers and their
topic areas include:

Prof. James Slagle (Minnesota) - Keynote speaker
Prof. Brian Gaines (Calgary) - Intelligent Interfaces for
Knowledge-Based Systems
Prof. Larry Henschen (Northwestern) - Logic and Databases
Dr. Sukhumay Kundu (Louisiana State) - AI in Software Engineering

CONTRIBUTED PAPERS

In addition to the invited talks, papers are being solicited from
researchers in academia, government and industry in the following areas:

ADP Project and Systems Management,
Knowledge-Based Simulation and Modeling,
Intelligent Man-Machine Interfaces,
Intelligent Databases,
AI in Software Engineering,
AI as a Tool for Decision-Making, and
Innovative Applications in MIS or Scientific Computing.

SUBMISSION DETAILS

Authors are asked to submit five (5) copies of their paper, which is to
be single-spaced and between five to seven pages in length. Both finished and
ongoing research will be considered by the program committee and reviewers.

E U R I N F O '88
FIRST EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FOR ORGANISATIONAL SYSTEMS
ATHENS 16-20 MAY 1988

CONCEPTS FOR INCREASED COMPETITIVENESS

organised by: COMMISSION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES
sponsored by: IFIP

The development of Information Systems cannot be separated from the develop-
ment of organisation style.
The aim of this conference is to explore trends and concepts in organisations
triggered by the widespread introduction of information technologies. These
technologies are making possible profound changes in the way which organi-
sations react to the market. Technological developments have a significant
impact on the competitive environment of companies of nearly all industries,
administrations and enterprises changing their shape, size, and mode of oper-
ation.
The conference will bring together decision makers, managers and researchers
from Europe and overseas, who are working on these issues. Key questions the
Conference aims to address are:

- What are the strategic neeeds of organisations which are not yet being
aided by information technology?

- What are the problems and difficulties with present information tech-
nology at both strategic and operational levels?

- What are the most significant trends in information technology?

- How does information technology change the competitive environment and
the nature of organisations?

- What are the requirements for further information technology develop-
ments from the users point of view?

- Which new concepts and tools for applied information system design are
available?

- What is the payoff for modern technology-based tools in the office? in
the factory? for engineers?

TECHNICAL PROGRAMME:

Complex information systems offer suppliers and system designers a very wide
range of design options. Early feedback from potential users will be
beneficial for all sides. In order to assess the impact of advanced infor-
mation technology on future organisational systems, and to analyse user needs
and user solutions for their impact on technological development, the tech-
nical programme will be developed according to three main themes:

I. Information management for organisations
II. Advances in information technology
III. Examples of advanced systems in a range of application domains

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME:

PAPERS:
The Conference will be structured in a number of parallel sessions to give
appropriate time to each contribution. Each session will be planned to
allow more discussion time than usual.

INTERACTIVE POSTER SESSIONS:
Some parallel sessions will be arranged in the interactive form which is
becoming popular.

WORKSHOPS:
Some sessions are planned with speakers co-ordinated to address one parti-
cular themes. Suggestions for themes and offers to convene panels, are in-
vited.

VIDEOTAPE DEMONSTRATIONS:
New work will be presented in a continuous programme.

TUTORIAL AND MANAGEMENT SEMINARS:
These will be presented in separate sessions in the 2 days before the
conference.

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS:

Contributed papers must be sent before October 31st, 1987, to the Programme
Committee Secretariat.
The Secretariat of the PC will be with the European Commission, DG XIII, in
Brussels. Address as follows:
