Subject: Help me find AI list

[[ Editor's Note: I think Todd may mean "mailing lists" since the USENET
group comp.ai is quite well known. However, not all Digest recipients
have access to USENET, while (obviously) all can get email. I do know
that the ole AIList dies an unfortunate and unanticipated death; however
the hue and cry, though, no one picked up the editorship and so it rests
in peace{s}. -PM ]]
Can anyone give me the e-mail address of any newsgroups
that handle the broad topic of Artificial Intelligence?
My only lead was AIList-Request@AI.AI.MIT.EDU ; however, this address is
two years old and the MIT POSTMASTER bounces this request back to me as
undeliverable.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not quite sure whether this'll make it past the moderators at Neuron
Digest but I wouldn't sleep too well unless I had a go at sending this.
When you're at the beginning of your Ph.D I guess you tend to suffer from
overoptimistic thoughts that what you are researching will actually do
somebody, somewhere some good. I guess that's why I paused in thought
over the notice about the "2nd Annual NEURAL NETWORKS FOR DEFENSE
Conference" advertised in Neuron Digest on Friday, 27 Apr 1990.
I know that defense is by no means a clear cut issue in any sense but I
also know that the line between research that is morally defensible and
that which is not has to be drawn somewhere.
It is not my place, nor is it my intention, to preach values to anyone
involved in the area of defense research. I only hope that researchers in
the area of neural networks with defense applications wind up with ideas
and inventions that do somebody, somewhere some good rather than bumping
up the quota of human misery and suffering.
David Lovell (dlovell@s1.uq.oz.au)
(replies welcome even if you have to pretend you have an opinion)
[[ Editor's Note: This message obviously made it past my arbitrary
keyboard. I rarely reject submissions; blatent sales pitches generally
do not get published, for example, though informational articles about
products or services are welcome. On the subject of Defense, I
appreciate David Lovell's reasoned plea. DoD work often provokes a
knee-kerk reponse in some people. It should also be noted that most of
the Neural Net (and AI) research, at least in U.S. academia, is funded in
part by the Defense Department. I hope all researchers reflect on their
own work and sources of funding and then make the concious decision to do
what they do, rather than simply ignoring the controversial issues. -PM ]]

If yes, we have a couple of them.

different kinds of neural networks ?

From: Andrew Cohen <andyco%cogs.sussex.ac.uk@NSFNET-RELAY.AC.UK>
Date: Tue, 08 May 90 17:19:13 +0100
I shall be trying to implement a 'punter's friend' for my msc project at
Sussex University. The aim is to get a network to pick winners if
possible, or even to assign a probability of winning to each horse. The
plan initially is to use a 3 layer network with backpropagation. The
training data would probably be taken from a season's flat racing at one
particular course. (If anyone has data maybe they might be willing to
share it for a price!)
Does anyone know of any similar implementations and associated problems?
Thanks for any help, I'll inform the list of any interesting results,
Andrew Cohen.

ECAI Workshop on
Artificial Intelligence and Music
Stockholm, Sweden. Tuesday, August 7, 1990
This workshop is the successor of the four previous workshops held in the
last two years: the AAAI-88 (St.Paul) and IJCAI-89 (Detroit) Workshops,
the GMD Workshop that preceded the International Computer Music
Conference (Bonn, Sept. 88), and the European Workshop on AI and Music
(Genoa, June 89).
AI and Music is an emerging discipline that involves such fields as
artificial intelligence, music, psychology, philosophy, linguistics, and
education. The last four workshops demonstrated a mixture of methods,
that range from somewhat technical application of AI methods to music
problems, to theoretical cognitive research.
This workshop will focus on further deepening our understanding of those
AI techniques and approaches that are relevant to music, and on the
relevance of music to AI research.
The workshop topics include (but are not limited to) the following:
Cognitive Musicology
Expert Systems and Music
Knowledge Representation and Music
Tutoring
Neural Computation and connectionist approaches in Music
Composition, Performance, Analysis tools (based on AI techniques)
Multi-media Composition and Performance
The Workshop is scheduled during the ECAI Tutorials (August, 7), held
immediately before the ECAI Scientific Meeting (August, 8-10).

COURSE SUMMARY
"Computer Speech Recognition: The State of the Art" will cover current
and emerging technologies in computer speech recognition. Leading
experts in the field will describe today's most successful speech
recognition systems and discuss the strengths and limitations of the
technology underlying each. Speech recognition systems examined in
detail include EAR, an English Alphabet Recognizer that uses neural
networks to achieve high recognition accuracy for spoken letters; SPHINX,
a system that uses hidden Markov models to recognize continuous speech in
a 1000 word vocabulary; and VOYAGER, a system that combines speech
recognition with natural language understanding to converse with the
speaker.
Workshop participants will gain an understanding of the problems involved
in speaker-independent computer speech recognition and the various
research approaches. Topics to be presented in detail include the
phonetic structure and variability of speech; signal representations;
hidden Markov models; neural network processing techniques; and natural
language understanding.
The instructors are distinguished researchers who have produced state-
of-the-art systems representing the different approaches to the problem.
Live demonstrations of speech recognition algorithms will be provided
throughout the course.
The workshop fee is $995 per person. To receive more information and

Here is the most recent list of Neural Net Journals that I compiled as of
5/7/90. I think it is fairly stable at this point as I haven't received
any additions in a while. I have not received any corrections for the
original listing and this updated list is perhaps 10% larger than the
original listing. I do not guarantee the accuracy of this list.
