Hey, big pow-wow meeting for dreamworkers in Berkeley, California this last weekend. The Bay Area Dreamworkers Group celebrated a Bizillon years of service to the Dream Community, and besides early BADG members like Linda Magallon and Fred Olsen and Bob Trowbridge, to mention just a few, there was also the president of IASD Richard Russo, the 2005 IASD conference host Marcia Emery and the head of the Dream Institute in Berkeley, Meredith Sabini. The three groups plan to make the Dream Institute the place to be in the Bay Area for dreams and dreaming with film nights, cultural nights and tons of dream sharing and experimenting with collective dreaming. Keep an eye on this place, its destined to go down in history of dreamwork as a seminal center for the 21st Century. Many thanks to the mentioned and many not mentioned contributors at that event for all they have done.
This month in Electric Dreams:
Lucid Dream Exchange editor Lucy Gillis offer ED readers a excerpt from the LDE, this month from Linda Lane Magallón. Are dream characters real people? Do they have a will, or a consciousness of their own? Are they all the same, or could some be lifeless projections? Magallón tackles the subject of dream characters in this first of a four part series.
Special Treat! RG Hudson dream poem, "The Dreamer & The Dreamed."
Stan Kulikowski II returns with a new selection from his dream journal,
"Going to Decatur"
Jean Campbell keep us up each month on the activities of The World Dreams Peace Bridge. Did you know that the WDPB often works with the iMage Project? What, you have never heard of the iMage project? Learn the connection between these organizations that both have been deeply influenced by dreams, and through these dreams deeply influence the condition of life for people on the planet earth.
The Senoi Controversy Continues: Strephon Kaplan-Williams continues the debate in
"Senoi Dreamwork, Facts and Fictions: A reply to G. William Domhoff, Ph.D. " Is the real issue whether the Senoi exist, or the influence of that Senoi have spread across the world?
Fortunately for Electric Dreams readers, each month Janet Garrett puts the articles from past issue online in an easy to access format. These articles contain a wide range of information for dreamers and dreamworkers. - Ritual DaFuMu for Peace
---
The World Dreams Peace Bridge, on the 15th of each month, is holding a monthly DaFuMu (a collective dream of good fortune: http://www.worlddreamspeacebridge.org/dafumu.htm ) to support peace.
On the weekend of 15-17th of March, 2003, there was the largest ever world wide outpouring of a desire for peace ( http://www.globenet.free-online.co.uk/reports/antiwarprotests.htm ). On the 15th of each month we can remind ourselves of the enormous potential within people, and call upon the global energy, so clearly displayed on that weekend.
In joining a DaFuMu each month we will be seeking the mandala of peace within the universal mind: learning what it is to be peaceful at a personal level, how to act in a peaceful manner within the world, and accessing and supporting the general mandala of peace available to all people.
A mandala is an image that holds together opposites. It is the image of our human condition in which dark and light both play together. In dreaming towards, and in creating "our" mandala of peace, we are learning how to move with grace in this world of opposites: how to be at peace and how to act with peace.
As Valley says of the mandala of peace:
A dream hologram interweaving the fabric of time with auspicious action. In rythmn with the creative intelligence. In balance with the pulse of life.
Our aim is to use our DaFuMu to help heal the destructive energies so rampant within the world at the moment (see Harry Bosma's mandala being created as a process of personal healing from dream images: http://alquinte.com/en/healing_dreams/mandala.shtml ). The construction of a peace mandala may flow from our dreams.
So, please join in on the 15th of each month. Before sleeping set your intention to dream towards the mandala of peace.
If you feel that your dream has touched upon a symbol that can be used within the mandala of peace we are creating, or on a particular relation of peace, please let us know. Just send your comment, picture or dream to http://www.worlddreamspeacebridge.org/dafumumonthly.htm . An Excerpt From The Lucid Dream Exchange
By Lucy Gillis
o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o
Linda Lane Magallón tackles the subject of dream characters in this first of a four part series. Are dream characters real people? Do they have a will, or a consciousness of their own? Are they all the same, or could some be lifeless projections? Join Linda as she takes us on a journey through her own thoughts and intriguing dreams. You may not look at your dream characters in quite the same way again!
DREAM CHARACTERS AND REALITY CHECKS
PART ONE: A QUEST FOR VERIFICATION
(c) 2005 Linda Lane Magallón
What are dream characters? We can speculate from now until the cows migrate to the moon and never come to a definitive conclusion. That's the nature of conjecture. When I first considered this question, some 20 years ago, I was convinced by neither wild guesses nor domestic explanations. I wanted to touch down on solid rock. Even in this moonlit field of study, dreams, I searched for information that had been grounded by reality checks.
Why Do Reality Checks?
Recently, I read an article by a non-lucid dreamer that was written when lucid dreaming was just a flicker in public awareness. He had heard that you could do "anything" in a lucid dream. This is a very common reaction upon attaining lucidity. Wow! This is magic! I can walk through walls! I can fly!
The euphoria is addicting; why question it? That would just deflate the sensation, not to mention, put a crimp in the fantastic ideal. It's very true, testing does puncture the happy face balloon. That's one reason why so few people do it.
However, as I will soon relate, there are some good reasons why reality checks are advantageous, even necessary. Let's say you decide to check out the assumption that you can do "anything" in a lucid dream. I suggest that when next you become lucid, you try to remember waking life. Try to recall what you were doing yesterday or last week or 5 years ago. Try to remember the date! As wondrous as dreamspace can be, it does have some limitations and a detailed memory of physical existence is one of them.
When memory is not at optimum, judgment is impaired - this fact is very obvious among certain elderly. It's also a fact as you dream. Along with memory, good judgment is one of the first things to wane. Think of how many times we dream and don't judge our experience to be a dream. It takes extra effort to become lucid; even more to maintain enough lucidity to experiment with the dream world and talk to dream characters. It's easy to assume that what you see is what you get. But there is no guarantee that your initial assessment will be the most accurate one. Unlike the years you've spent awake, you just haven't had the time nor training to develop the same degree of discrimination as you sleep.
Compared to the physical plane, the dream world is not as fixed an environment, and that includes its residents.
Combine impaired judgment with flexible subject matter and the challenge to identify the nature of dream characters becomes exponentially more complex.
Given that the topic is so complicated, why go through all the hassle to try to figure out an answer? Why not just accept dream characters as they seem to be and not bother your head with other possibilities?
Well, some people can do that, no problem. Their dream encounters, their attitudes towards the encounters and the results of those attitudes, belief and behavior are either neutral or positive. Under such circumstances, if the in-dream event is troublesome, they assume that they are basically unaffected because they can overcome the troubled scenario while they dream.
Or they can wake up to a state of consciousness that they believe to be entirely unrelated to the dream. And they think that anything they do to a dream character has no waking world consequence, either. Now, maybe they're right. And, maybe they're not. It's impossible to tell, when their theories aren't being tested. If everything seems okay on the home front, there is little motivation to question and experiment with such presumptions.
However, there are other folks, like me, who can truly benefit from reality checks. We can be having dream troubles that aren't resolved in-dream either because we aren't lucid or because lucidity, in itself, is not enough. We might wonder, is the dream character standing before me sure evidence of a physical sickness, a spiritual crisis, a mental breakdown or some perverse fragment of my sexual personality? Is this dream character a real demon, a real alien, a real succubus or a ghost with a bad attitude? Is this a real live human being, with an evil intent and the power to endanger? When health is potentially at risk, the subject of dream character identification gets real serious, real fast.
Or perhaps the dream encounter is benign, but a dreamer's leap of faith sans judgment starts a chain of events that lead him down a path of dubious merit. I know people who changed jobs, got married or moved to another city as the result of a dream. These stories are quite popular because they play up the positive aspects of the dream (and, in this culture, the dream needs all the support it can get!) But they cover only the first chapter of the story, the immediate event rather than the long-term consequence. When chapter two describes debt, drunkenness or divorce, dreamers tend not to admit it, unless you know them well.
Then there's the fantastically wonderful dreams that convert strongly held beliefs and start a cascade of new ones. The genesis of most major religions includes powerful dreams. Religion making is at work even today. I know several people who started new spiritual practices and began to teach and spread the word as a result of dreams. Perhaps the neonatal belief benefits the founder and his disciples. But what about the rest of the community?
Does the new "truth" or "prophecy" pronounced by the guiding dream character make non-believers objects of scorn or worse? Holy cow.
And what about people or dream characters who take advantage of your naïveté in terms of psychic phenomena? Well, I hope you get my point. Dreams and related endeavors are barely emerging from the dark side of the moon.
Ignorance, immaturity and misinformation intermingle freely with valuable and verifiable notions. It's easy to get discombobulated.
Much of our perplexing phenomena are shared experiences. At the very least, we can have similar scenarios in each of our private hermit caves. But it goes beyond that. Speak of wholeness or a peaceful Earth, for instance, and you are no longer ensconced in your cave. You are looking at the whole planet of dreams and dreamers from an outer space perspective. See any floating cows out there?
Some Standards for Assessing Dream Characters
1. Expert Opinions
Here you are, with your dream report in hand, intrigued, perplexed or greatly bothered by a dream character who played a leading role. What to do?
Well, if you are new to this puzzler, you can, of course, leap to conclusions or play guessing games, but I've already described the problems with that course of action. At first, you might not have the "right stuff"
to solve the mystery on your own. So, if you aren't savvy enough to bring your inquiry down to earth, why not consult someone else? How about a book, a dream dictionary, a workshop instructor, a dreamworker, a scientist, a guru or your next-door neighbor?
After I began seeking information, it soon became obvious that there was no single answer. Instead, there were lots and lots of theories and suggestions. Last time I counted, I had upwards of 30 major categories. In my quest, I mainly concentrated on a single character, the black woman who had appeared in my first lucid dream. In many cases, but not all, I recited the dream so that folks might get a better idea of my dream dynamics. I thought that approach would limit speculation to the most likely choices. It didn't. People still felt free to ignore the content of the dream and insert their preferred explanations.
In this society, the reactions to encounter phenomena are quite polarized, because that's how we think physical reality works. Either we meet a real entity or we have a hallucination, a fantasy, an illusion. These are the sorts of responses I received when I asked people about the black woman who had appeared in my dream.
For the materialists, she was simply the firing of a brain synapse, a reaction to a bit of undigested food or a random image drawn from my memory banks. The literalists labeled her as a soul mate or relative from one of my past lives. The spiritually minded saw her as a shaman, a priestess, an angel or an astral guide.
Then there were the symbolists. For the Freudians, she was a wisp of wish fulfillment. The Jungians couldn't decide which archetype to fish out of their sea of unconsciousness. Was she shadow or anima? The most popular response came from the Gestalt camp. The black woman was definitely a part of me.
Uh, huh. Everybody was convinced; nobody offered explanations that were much more than proclamations without supporting evidence. It soon became obvious that I wasn't dealing with solid information, even if the explanation came from the scientific establishment. It didn't matter which philosophical treatise, academic thesis, psychological technique, spiritual tenet, psychic reading or off-hand remark I considered. It was imagination run amuck. Or born-again religion: this is the "truth" and thou shalt not challenge the authority who speaks it. Or quoting the word of somebody else who quoted the word of somebody else who...Holy cow.
Instead of one ungrounded bovine, there was a whole field of them. I dutifully collected all the possibilities and tried to milk them for what they were worth, with little sense of surety or satisfaction. How expert can experts be if they've never had a lucid dream?
2. Your Own Dream Life
Some of the people who suggested explanations for my dream character didn't even bother to hear my dream. I found this most bizarre. It's the sign of an interpretation system that takes a dream element totally out of context, adheres to fixed concepts and produces a pronouncement strictly by the rules of the system. The symbol-game. You'll find it in any dream dictionary and in many dream theories. Its highly favored because it's so easy to remember or use, especially when you're talking off the top of your head instead of offering thoughtfully considered commentary.
To me, no dream element exists without a context in which it lives. No dream is a tree without roots and supporting environment. The dream element's primary context is the dream itself. One question that I was never asked by proponents of a fixed system was, "Does your dream character have a name?"
If they'd bothered to listen to the dream, the answer would have been obvious. In the dream, I called her "Will-it." Willie, for short. Just that small piece of information can open up a whole new string of associations.
No guarantee that any of them will be the ultimate answer, though.
The popular dream methods have another limiting factor. They interpret only a single dream. They don't pay attention to any others. Here's a second context all too often ignored: the entire dream life of the dreamer. Few people inquired if I had had any other dreams like that first lucid dream.
Nobody asked if I'd ever had another dream of Willie. Within three weeks of the first one, my answer would have been "Yes," although it was not a lucid one. Willie became a recurring dream character. And I became a journal keeper.
Willie's dreams, recorded on bits and pieces of paper scattered here and there, would not have been very informative. Especially when it comes to reality checks, a dream journal isn't a luxury; it's a necessity. Everything gathered in one place. And titled. And indexed. Eventually I word processed and printed out Willie dreams to fill a binder dedicated just to her.
The first context for a dream character is the dream in which the character appears. For me, the second context included further dreams in which she appeared. Now, I can tell you that I have recorded over 140 dreams which featured Willie, although most of them have been non-lucid. Thus, I have had limited in-dream opportunity to interview her directly. For the most part, when I became lucid, I didn't have enough presence of mind to ask penetrating questions. I was too caught up in the moment. Or too afraid I'd lose my fragile hold on lucidity. I had few opportunities to ask the obvious questions, "Who are you?" or "Who do you think you are?" But I did inquire that of other dream characters. Plus I asked some of them who they thought Willie was. Not to mention, who they thought I was. If you are a lucid dreamer, doesn't it make sense to do some in-dream detective work?
I also have a slew of lucid dreams in which I went looking for Willie, called for her or tried to get information about her in some other way. The effort was not always fruitful (as was true in the waking state). The answers I did get were varied (as was also true in the waking state). Some responses were straightforward; some were quite bizarre. But in neither state of consciousness was there consensus. I did not find the dream to be the pristine and single-minded source of wisdom that some views would have us believe it is.
3. Expert Systems
If you can't find the answers outside yourself, go within. So claims the new age credo. The irony about "new age" belief is that much of it is actually old age tradition and practice. It's only new to our culture. The willingness to distinguish lucid dreaming from non-lucid dreaming is a fairly recent phenomenon, so lucid dreams, per se, usually aren't considered as a source of information. When "dreaming" is mentioned, rarely is the subject sleep-in-bed dreams, anyway. Rather, the topic is more likely to be altered states or waking imagination. And you don't have to stretch your imagination much, if you follow a prescribed system.
I Ching, Tarot, Star*Gate, runes, astrology: these and other divination systems can be used to ask questions. I used them to inquire about my dream character. Some systems presuppose that the information will reveal yourself, so you are predisposed to believe that a dream character is a sub-set of you. Other systems will allow for the existence of someone other than you, but mostly in terms of how he affects you. Not in terms of being an independent entity. It's important to keep in mind that the answer to a question is preprogrammed to stay within certain limits, by the structure of the belief in which it lives, whether that be systematized or not.
Within the field of dreamwork, there are a host of interpretive and non-interpretive methods to illuminate dreams. When Fred Olsen and I founded the Bay Area Dreamworkers Group, in effect, we extended an open invitation for all sorts of dreamwork and new age techniques to step out of the shadowy past and into the spotlight of the present. Freud's free association, Jung's amplification and Gestalt dialogue were already well known in the field of dreams. But there's many more like bodywork, hypnotherapy, "re-entering" the dream via waking imagination, sand tray, visualization journeys, vision quests, dancing, singing, and creating art from dreams. If anything, dreamwork is even more heavily disposed to the idea that a dream character is part of you, since it's genesis is individual psychology rather than social philosophy.
Just the opposite used to be true when it came to channeling, automatic writing and mediumship. The idea of being possessed by someone (or
something) beyond you was a hot topic of discussion. In recent years, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction. As regards these specific activities, my experience does lead me to favor the entity-as-part-of-me notion. However, I've found that the session can be influenced by outsiders, just not the ones traditionally credited or blamed.
My friend and colleague Bob Trowbridge ran a channeling group for 10 years.
While there were many possibilities for the source of channeled material, the most popular choice was a deceased human being. As Bob says, with tongue in cheek, "Just because you're dead don't mean you're smart!" No matter what the actual source of the material, there's always the question of how valid the content is. And how valid it is to seek answers from that source, compared to others. So how worthwhile was this quest to discover the essence of dream characters? And what source, if any, gave the most fruitful answers or inspired useful ideas?
The Search For Willie
I did a lot of searching for Willie in those first few years following my breakthrough dream. It was my prime reason for trying to achieve lucidity.
_________________________
Obregon, 5/8/83
When I come to lucidity, I find myself reading a book and see the word "Obregon." There are three pictures of a Chinese friar and three entries about the Malaysian Peninsula. It as if the friar liked the area so much that he experienced life there three times. I move back from the book and find myself in a room with floral patterned wall paper. As I look around, I begin to lose the dream. I try to retain it by continuing my sense of touch and thus am able to regain my sight. I look around again and discover this is a playroom with crayons in the shelves. In the front is a table with another book atop it. I ask the blonde woman standing there, "Is it my Akashic records, my past life record?" "No," she replies. Flipping through it, I see contains drawings of the human torso. "Are you Willie?" I ask the woman and bring my eyes close to her face. No, I can tell she isn't. I move back.
At this point I realize there had been another woman, black-haired, who just left the room. I follow her into the next room which turns out to be a galley kitchen filled with women. "Can anyone here get a message to Willie?"
I begin writing a note on a piece of white paper. "Dear Willie, Please contact me. I need to talk with you." I fold the paper and hand it to an Asian woman who walks out of the room. Turning back to the group I ask them, "How come there are no men?" In response I'm greeted with shrugs.
_________________________
"Where is Willie?" went hand in hand with the question "Who is Willie?" And who were all those other dream characters, besides?

Woman With The Blue Face, 12/29/83
A woman with a blue face (mask?) is seated wearing a long, billowy gown. She says something I don't understand. I reply, "I can't hear you."
She bends toward me, but not too close. Is there a barrier or force field between us? Whispering in my ear, she repeats the unfamiliar language. It has several "sss" sounds - like the pressure escaping from a steam kettle.
"I'm sorry, I can't understand you," I say. "Do you know how to contact Willie? Should I call, write her, or send her a note?"
Amused, the woman shakes her head several times, "No, no, no."

Okay, so this dream character told me what not to do. But not what I should do. Big wow. Some dream characters were just no help at all. Others, well...

The Woman Who Knows Willie, 11/19/84
I'm at a conference, standing next to one of the long tables in a large room. I go over to another table with papers on it where a woman is seated.
She is facing the bookcase against the wall. I view the dark, kinky hair on the back of her head (is she Caucasian? Black?). She turns toward me and says, "Hello Casey." I ask hopefully, "Willie?" She replies, "I know her."
"Oh," I say, thinking this must be a friend of hers. "I really think I should sit here," I say but return to my original table in the back left-hand corner of the room. Then I turn around. "May I join you?" the woman asks. At this location there seems to be quite a few people in nearby tables, including an Asian man who is being helped by a teacher. Since there are so many people in such a small space, I feel hesitant about inviting her to join me, so I gesture with a shrugged shoulder and open hand as if to say, "You can if you want, but there's not much room." Seated, I see my dinner in front of me: a plate of crispy-coated rice, vegetables, and fish.
Someone says the tomato sauce is from The Mid-West. I wonder, "Is the fish in the Mid-West fresh?"
Behind me is a window opening with potted plants. I perch on the sill. I want to leave; it's boring. So I lean back and fall out of the window. As I drop down the side of what turns out to be a skyscraper, I wonder, have the people in the conference room seen me? Will they worry? So I fly back up and sit on the window sill to repeat the scene. This time, I fall out when I'm sure no one's looking.
The skyscrapers in the area are so high that I can't even see the ground. To my left I can see two other people who are practicing flying, too. One is a woman, in white; I'm also in a chic white outfit. I fly off toward the right down a "canyon" of buildings. At one point I realize that my movement seems to bring the dream into clearer focus. I think, is this all just my projection? It sure is fun.
_________________________
This wasn't the first nor last time I got distracted while lucid. Food and flying will do it every time! I just wish I had had the presence of mind to question more thoroughly the woman who addressed me as Casey. That's the same name that Willie had called me in my first lucid dream.

Willie's Brother and Sister, 8/11/85
I become lucid while flying down a narrow valley. I stop at the end, on a street corner. There's a field beyond with a single small shack. On the corner are two black teenagers. I ask, "Do you know Willette...(I have to think hard)...Nicholson?" The young man says softly, shyly, "She isn't here now." I get the impression the two are Willie's younger siblings.

Yes, Willie has a first and last name.

The Dreamer & The Dreamed

I am dreamed into this living
I am real to my soul,
So deep asleep
It knows not yet
That it is dreaming.
I believe
the moves I make
the words I speak
The thoughts I think
and yet
My floating self,
The one which breathes all life
Through and out my mouth and nostrils,
Seems to know
Different,
To know
Differently
from me
Whom I believe so ardently
And right on the tip of my mind
There underlies
A question,
A yearning,
A passion and, ultimately,
A knowing -
That I am the dreamed,
My dreamer asleep where I live,
Way within, far beyond,
In a whole 'nother mind
Without time
Without space
Without direction or fear,
Where I live unenclosed
In flesh,
Unembraceable by death,
Just entranced and entangled
In this life which I dream
To be real

THE VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE
Life's Little Book of Magic
April, 2005
Jean Campbell
o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o
Ever since the first donation was made to The iMAGE Project for the Aid for Traumatized Children work of The World Dreams Peace Bridge, I have been trying to explain the relationship between the two groups and help people feel comfortable with the idea of sending money to an unknown nonprofit. The iMAGE Project is not the Red Cross. It's not even Save the Children, but just a small, relatively unknown nonprofit organization.
And there is not even a logical reason that donations for The World Dreams Peace Bridge should go to The iMAGE Project, aside from the fact that donations to charitable organizations in the United States are tax deductible. And the fact that I am active in both The Peace Bridge and The iMAGE Project, whose ideals are most compatible.
But the impetus to make The iMAGE Project visible enough for people to donate toward the work with children in Iraq has produced first an exceptionally beautiful web site, designed by Liz Diaz; and now Life's Little Book of Magic.
Life's Little Book is an idea that came to me many years ago. At first, I wanted to keep the idea to myself, write a book that was just about my own experiences of magic, or the I Mage. Every once in a while though, I would bring out the title and run it past someone whose eyes would light with pleasure as they heard the words, until finally I realized that we all have magical tales to tell.
So this week I sent out several hundred invitations to people to join the Open House at The iMAGE Project http://www.imageproject.org/openhouse.htm and to write in Life's Little Book of Magic, which will be an ongoing, inspirational activity of The iMAGE Project.
I'd like to invite you to write your own, true tales of magic. I'd like you to invite your friends to do the same. Two things will happen if you do. One is that one day The iMAGE Project name will be connected in the minds of many people with hope and dreams. And the other is that we will all be able to see how magic operates through us to move into the world, even as we dream the world into existence.
Lend your account to the annals of personal magic.

Dream: Going to Decatur
o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o
DATE : 27 apr 2005 07:11
DREAM : going to decatur
=( yesterday was tuesday. i spent most of the day at the university giving my final exams in my large web design course. most of the students were turning in their web sites for final grading which takes some time to transfer files from the web server into permanent storage media, so i was an hour or two late in both classes. i left my night class about 21:00 and went to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription that i am out of, but found that the doctor had neglected to phone in the script which i had been promised he would do by 17:00. the company has pulled advandamet from the market for some reason and i need something other for the main job of blood sugar regulation with this type2 diabetes. this doctor is not very good at his job as several times now i have run out of the drugs and he is slow to respond with his part. i went to bed around midnight and got to sleep without much effort. tomorrow i will have to call that doctor's office and fuss about him missing the prescriptions for the last several days. )=
i am riding in a back seat of a large dark van. my father is driving and my grandfather, earl bell, is riding in the front beside him. we are going somewhere in southern missouri. i watch the people in the other cars that we pass on the highway, having little else to do. i see a really pretty woman driving her family in car. she looks over and notices me, so i smile back at her.
soon my father pulls over to a roadside restaurant, saying we need to stop for some lunch. inside the place we find rather plain tables with red and white checkered table clothes, but the food is good american fare, mostly burgers and fries.
after eating, i go to the bathroom to wash up, but when i return to the parking lot, i find that the van has already left. this does not upset me as much as i would suppose. it just natural that if i am split up from my family that i will just make my own way back to the
house at saint joe, where my grandparents live. if i leave right
away, i ought to be able to get back before supper tonight.
so i start out, heading north, back the way we came in. i know that soon i will have to hitchhike, trying to catch a ride with someone, but for now i feel like walking to stretch my legs for a while. i have been sitting in the van all morning and after the full meal i think some exercise will feel good. so i start to walk on the roadside with a determined stride.
it does not take me long to get further down the road. since i am now on the slower pace than driving, i can notice the landscape more fully and i appreciate scenic perspectives better than when were just driving past everything. my father was always so concerned of getting to where we are going that he would rarely if ever slow down to appreciate what there is to see.
i pass an odd industrial facility that is used to test really large broadcast antennae. the building is shaped like a giant cube constructed from heavy metal beams that surround the tall antenna towers. there is a solid metal box inside that i suppose traps the electric signals which the antenna sends out, but the box is off center from the outer cube structure. it reminds me of a tesseract with the inner dimensional shape out of balance. i suppose that this has something to do with catching the longer wavelengths that would not be sampled if the antenna inside were centered in the device.
the facility is huge as the antenna are probably two hundred meters tall, and the cube structure dwarfs them in size. as i am passing this structure, the light catches it with a brightness that illuminates parts of the interior with shapes that look like several capital A frames surrounded by darker shadows. this unusual effect is very striking visually and i wish i had my digital camera to catch the image.
indeed, i start wishing for my camera a lot as i proceed through the midwestern country side. across some open fields i see a skyscaper of some city rising abruptly out of the open plains, surrounded by several other tall buildings of a downtown. that skyscraper has an illuminated rounded top like the crysler building in new york. it amazes me to see such an advanced urban scene so placed into an agricultural setting. although it would slow my progress back home to stop and photograph this remarkable beauty, i think it would certainly be worthwhile to catch this photograph. i hope someday i can repeat this journey with a camera.
soon i pass a row of ornate victorian houses, huge homes crowded together with their gingerbread porches, the paint on their white sidings peeling away but not detracting from their standardized elegance. another striking photo that i will miss. beyond the victorian homes i find a cemetery divided into square plots, each plot crowded with small carved tombstones. unlike most burial sites, no two of the rather small monuments are even similar to each other.
dozens of small sculptures bearing the names of the dead are pushed together side by side. i could take a dozen photos here, catching the many many unique shapes of the tombstones from different angles.
at one street intersection i start to turn too early so i would pass through the grassy backyards of a residential neighborhood rather than down the roadside. on the spur of the moment i decide to continue through the backyards for this block. the backside of these houses feature laundry lines and doghouses and trash cans-- a side of the real lives of the people who are inside that we usually do not get to see directly.
at the end of this block comes a wooded area. going through the trees i find some abandoned red brick buildings. faded signs that have fallen into the leaf liter tell me that this was once a federal prison. i cut through one of the buildings where the doors have fallen away. inside i do not find the iron prison cells that i expected, but a windowless hallway with solid heavy doors. i am glad to get out of there and stay outside the other neglected buildings.
still, even here i think there are some striking images i could take if i had my camera with me. there are some creeping white wild flowers that are flowing over the concrete between the buildings which i would like to identify. i am impressed how nature is reclaiming and refreshing even the darker cruel side of the human criminal culture.
so i continue my picturesque journey through the midwest countryside.
soon i start to run to make better time. i usually do not run very much, but it feels good on my legs. while running, i decide that if i can get home to my grandparents at a reasonable time in the afternoon, that i will go on to visit my girlfriend in decatur. i have not seen here in several weeks since the school semester ended.
i make it back to saint joe in good time. my family is inside just sitting down to eat, so i join them. i am quite hungry after all my exercise getting here, but i only eat just enough to get by. i do not want to get sleepy from eating too much.
i go outside with my aunt dorthy to show her my pickup truck parked in the driveway. "i am going to drive to decatur tonight to see my girlfriend." i tell her. i sit in the driver seat with the door open. the truck fires right up and i rev the engine. i do not know what else to do the show off the vehicle, so i tilt the seat way back with the bottom adjustment lever. it feels a little foolish to be seated so low.
"decatur is long way." she tells me. maybe i should start tomorrow in the morning, but i decide that i can drive at night better than in the morning. decatur is a long way.
=( awake at 06:59. both my father and grandfather (my mother's
father) are dead now, so i suppose there may be some significance in my traveling with them in that dark van at the start of the dream.
but they go on their way, leaving me to travel on my own. my maternal grandparents did live in saint joseph missouri and my aunt dorthy at the end was my grandmother's sister. my mother liked that aunt, but she has died many years ago. with my health condition threatened perhaps all those dead relatives are reaching out to me as a warning of some sort: enjoy these material views of life while you still can. the picturesque part of the dream where i want the camera so much seems to be the impressive part of this. at least i wish i had a way to capture those images which are still visible in my mind. i have never owned a pickup truck. i wish i knew who the girlfriend in decatur was. i have never been to decatur illinois and was even unsure how to spell the name until i looked it up on google before i started to write this dream. i do recall driving past decatur with my family once when i was just a teenager. the name strikes me as a bleak remote place surrounded by tall grain elevators and dusty fields. i seem to remember in the real life seeing signs with corn cobs saying something about that city. it seems that decatur may be the city of death looming just ahead for me, and i wonder what kind of girlfriend comes from there. )=

Senoi Dreamwork, Facts and Fictions:
A reply to G. William Domhoff, Ph.D.
By Strephon Kaplan-Williams
o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o
I have read Professor Domhoff's reply to my critical article of his challenge to Jeremy Taylor's stated remarks about Senoi dream theory.
(The Senoi Do Not Practice Senoi Dream Theory: A Reply To Strephon Kaplan-Williams
G. William Domhoff, Ph.D., Electric Dreams 12(4), April, 2005. - ed )
I do appreciate that Dr Domhoff has considerably toned down his style of arguing his case. This is one of my main criticisms of his previous style, and in my challenge article to Domhoff I decided to use his attacking style also, medicine for medicine. So with the new style of his last article I can myself reply rather mildly.
I will say that it still defies logic to add up several little bits of evidence, as Domhoff lists again in this latest reply, to create one big conclusion. I say again that his personal anecdotal evidence does not fit scientific standards and so he should not put himself across on the Senoi dreamwork issues as any more scientific than Jeremy Taylor.
Domhoff has not won his case on either logical or scientific grounds, as far as I am concerned. Which character is his article? A diatribe? Or somewhere in between a diatribe and a scientific argument? Or is he just a good writer and critic, also of value in American culture?
If Professor Domhoff is being a critic, where almost any kind of argumentation goes, I don't think he should set up a website sponsored by a university but should be on his own. The website being connected to the university implies for argumentation sake that he is not only a professor but scientific in his articles.
This I question.
As far as any claim I have to being scientific, it comes not from arguing the Senoi dreamwork case one way or another.
I am one who has taken the concepts from Stewart and reused them in the American culture of the seventies and eighties. My published dreamwork methodology The Jungian-Senoi Dreamwork Manual, owes its roots to a number of sources, including "Senoi mythos", if we can use a term from cultural anthropology, the underlying belief structures of a culture.
I don't argue whether the Senoi practiced special dreamwork or not. I simply say that there is not inconvertible evidence that they did or did not in the Stewart period in the 1930's and no amount of argumentation in either direction can be scientifically conclusive in my mind.
But I do say that the Senoi idea worked quite well in its implementation in American culture with myself and with others.
Where Professor Domhoff errs in his little, well-written book, is that he did not research the American dreamwork movement of the time before making his pronouncements on its ineffectiveness. Domhoff went to great lengths to challenge around the Senoi peoples issues but lives in America and has not given us nearly as much research for our own culture of dreams and dreamwork. Why not? I don't know.
Probably another logical fallacy on his part. Argument by misdirection and diversion. If you want to destroy a certain premise don't attack it directly. Attack a side issue as if you are attacking and destroying the main issue.
Main issue: Does American dreamwork work as developed in the sixties and seventies, and how do you indicate its effectiveness in an objective manner?
Side issue: One of the key concepts of the American dreamwork movement was the Stewart-Senoi dreamwork concept that seems to have launched hundreds of dream groups at the time. Did the Senoi practice the Stewart dreamwork or not?
Fallacy by misdirection: Attack and "prove" that the Senoi did not practice dreamwork as described by Stewart. Declare yourself the winner on "scientific grounds." Then from the high ground you have declared yourself to have gained, declare a generalization that there is no basis to the claim that American-Senoi dreamwork works.
Note: please note that Domhoff never did a good job in his little book of destroying the effectiveness of the American-Senoi dreamwork movement. But he did a hell of a job in his attack on Stewart, quoting tons of here-say evidence from Stewart ex-friends, ex-wife, members of the family, and so on. What makes this other than gossip I cannot understand. Read the little book yourself. It's great reading.
Note: I had published the Jungian-Senoi Dreamwork Manual before Domhoff and his book. In this book are many valid dreamwork methods used by hundreds of people to positive effect, according to them. This is not just a statement by me, but I use their own examples written by dreamwork participants in my trainings. This is not hear-say evidence but direct evidence, witness evidence, from the people involved in using the techniques. Professor Domhoff never contacted me for an interview, or to interview a large number of my students using American-Senoi techniques. Instead, he tells us, his readers, that dreamwork failed at Esselen, a rich people's center at Big Sur, California, hardly representative of long term commitment to growth and development using dreams and dreamwork. Domhoff knew of me and my work because he mentions in his book that I took out the name, Senoi, from my original Jungian-Senoi Institute. I did so from a lack of clarity and weakness. I changed the name to Jungian Dreamwork Institute, then to Jungian-Senoi Dreamwork Institute. Now, many people use the name Jungian-Senoi Dreamwork for what I collected and refined of dreamwork techniques, including discovering, Objectifying Dreams, Following the Dream Ego and modifying Jung's active imagination to do Dream Reentry into the dream itself to change the dream ego function in new interactions with original dream content reexperienced in the meditative state and usually leading to a deep sense of resolution.
Note: Domhoff refers to his work on the Hall scales for evaluating dream content objectively, but I have not found that this kind of labeling and generalizing does much good for understanding dream content. The fallacy of the Hall approach, from what I know of it, is that the so-called objective panel that labels dream content as to aggression and so on is not objective but culturally biased from their own cultural attitudes and reality pictures. And again, using college students all the time for their studies. What do such young persons know? I worked with real adults in the real world where the action is. I needed dreamwork techniques that worked for people into life and effectiveness, not hanging out in the ivory towers of the university where Domhoff still is, I believe. (for readers here, I am sure you can recognize a certain polarization between Domhoff and I. He represents academia and I represent people of the working world who must run this civilization as a whole. Imagine ivory tower people looking at the real world dreams of real world people and trying to classify them according to their university labels. Talk about the Senoi culture, and what was it. How about the American culture and what it is?)
So my best to Professor Domhoff at my age of seventy-one. I have moved on myself from schools of psychology into what I call functional dreamwork. How do various parts of a dream function in the dream and in the personality? I have also put out a call to found a separate branch of psychology called Dreamwork :Psychology. Let the different psychology's, and the different university sciences, have their own views on the human condition. I am most interested now in dream and dreamwork psychology in itself. This is where the discoveries and developments are to be made.

Dream title: Hard to explain
Dream date: April 29, 2005
Dreamer name: Blinx
Dream text: I was with my boyfriend and a group of our friends downtown in some city. All of them took off to go to some building further downtown, which was supposedly on fire. I had to walk to a parking garage to get my car. When I got there, my car was this old rusty run-down car that apparently had no brakes. A male friend of mine was waiting in the passenger seat. I pulled out of the parking spot, and slowly started out of the garage, but because there were no brakes, I ran into a wall. I was really embarrassed that I did this in front of my friend, but he consoled me. Then I tried to drive again and still had trouble, but it was working OK. We arrived downtown where we thought everyone else would be. I parked the car, and my friend got out and walked away. As he left, another guy (who I didn't recognize or know) walked up. He said hi and started talking to me. I had the driver's side door open and was looking for something on the floor. He walked around to the passenger side and crouched down to my level. I had a pair of shoes on the floor of the car, which he picked up and moved closer to the firewall of the car. The car had a rather large vent in the center, near the floor. As this guy was speaking to me and moving my shoes... a BRIGHT white light came from the heating vent. It engulfed the entire scene and a LOUD LOUD noise shot through my ears. (The thing is, I don't think this was part of the dream... it felt like something else happening to me outside of dreaming) This light and noise ended the dream. As soon as it happened, I frantically tried to open my eyes. I really thought I was dying... or that something was happening. I fought to open my eyes...which I was finally able to do. I looked around my room and just reassured myself that I wasn't dead. It was really really weird. I don't understand what happened... the bright white light and the loud noise had nothing to do with my dream. They seemed like a completely separate entity that interrupted my dream and sleep. It almost felt as if I blew a fuse in my brain (if that were possible...).
Dream comments: It wasn't so much the dream, but the light and noise that interrupted it.

Dream text: I was going on vacation with my family. When we had to stop at the store, God Charlotte came over because I started singing one of their songs. They were hanging out with me for the whole dream.
Dream comments: I do like Good Charlotte, but I wasn't even thinking about them.
Dream title: Husband fighting a burglar in the middle of the night
Dream date: 04/20/05

Dream text: My husband is fighting a burglar in the middle of the night in my dream and I go and find the weapons for him.
Dream comments: He is a martial arts instructor.
Dream title: None
Dream date: 4/25/05
Dreamer name: Anna
Dream text: I was in a group home and the staff was planning to break us out (help us run away). There were 6 kids & 4 staff. We got half-way out of the building and one of the head directors stopped us. She asked where we were going and the staff replied, "Are we going to go to prison?" The director called the police and then I woke up.
Dream comments: I don't know what it means but today one of the girls ran away.
Dream title: Threat to the Gods
Dream date: 4/24/05
Dreamer name: NE
Dream text: I am in a palace of Egypt, a surreal palace almost of an extraterrestrial quality. Suddenly I sense (as if I can hear their thoughts) that I have become a threat to these men, the Egyptian Pharaoh Priest and his young but powerful Protégé.
I immediately realize that I need to get out of there and fast (because they can read my thoughts too and know my movements as I do theirs), I swiftly move to the other side of the wall followed closely by the young one- lets call him Hawk (- that was his energy- mine was a of a Feline- the Pharaoh was a Snake-) and I move through an air duct high on the wall effortlessly- as if my skeleton collapses like a cat moving through something way too small for it's body - I climb the wall on to the roof of this tall palace tower (at night). For some reason Hawk was not able to perform this same feat, he was not be able to follow me more closely. I soared off the roof flying high at an incredible speed - far away and over seemingly modern cities. Finally I landed on a roof with a thousand piles of grain - I slip like a needle into one of the piles of grain. This will be my hiding place I think - but then I realize that they can read my thoughts even from so far. I sense my enemy drawing nearer, so I move to the edge of the building climbing down walls over and through spaces as if to lose them through a maze. With super-human strength and agility, I fly swiftly off building tops high over the clouds, onto other buildings in other cities- until I reach the apartment of a Muslim woman, with her baby. She had her hair covered and accepted me as her guest without question. But as I look out the window and see explosions at a close distance I know if I stay here she will share my fate. So I leave and fly away again into the clouds at record speed, this continues until I wake up.
Dream comments:
This is what I remember I am sure there was more the chase went on a long time, the whole chase was at night- but at the palace it was dusk, I would wake up and then fall back asleep into the dream- it was very real- the telepathy between me and my captors was very surreal it was as if we could just feel through and sense each others thoughts and movements- instead of hearing or seeing them. I was faster but their will would not weaken-I was not afraid just wished they would give up- I for some reason I did not want to stop and fight them, If I were to stop I would just surrender- it was as if they meant to capture me but not kill me- and I was not a killer.
Dream title: 9 months pregnant and in labor
Dream date: 04/21/05

Dream text: I was nine months pregnant and I was in labor. I could feel my uterus tightening and squeezing the baby out. It felt so real and I was excited to see the child.
Dream comments: none

Dream date: 4/21/05
Dreamer name: anonymous
Dream text: I was in the house I grew up in and was holding a little boy. I was cuddling him making the noises we make when we are caressing an infant. Suddenly there was a loud noise I turned around and scratched my left forearm with something on the wall. I dropped the baby and he began crying. Each time I tried to pick him up, I could not it as if her were invisible. But I could touch him and he looked just like a real baby I just could not pick him up.
Dream comments: I woke feeling the same panic I felt in the dream and my arm was scratched. This is not the first time that I have such a vivid dream I use to just shrug it off but now they are happening more frequently.
Dream title: Numbers
Dream date: 3/05
Dreamer name: anonymous
Dream text: I dream of numbers. I also heard a voice talking of these numbers and the voice said to divide 8 and 11 by the number 4, and to play these numbers in lottery.
Dream comments: At the time of these dreams I did play the lottery a few times I don't play to often
Dream title: Weird figures
Dream date: 4/20/05
Dreamer name: anonymous
Dream text: I saw a weird black figure in my room and it said that it was here to protect me, that it was my guardian angel.
Dream comments: what does this mean and what was it?
Dream title: Zombies
Dream date: 04/21/05
Dreamer name: anonymous
Dream text: I was in a warehouse full of zombies. They were kept alive. If they would wake up I had to spray them with some kind of water gun that had some kind of chemical in it. There were several of them waking up and they killed some of the workers. Some tried to catch me but they did not succeed. In the end one of them caught me but he did not kill me. He was holding me and I was afraid for my life thinking that he could kill me anytime. I had this remote control and there was a TV. I used the remote control to change the channel and the zombie fell asleep and I ran away. Then I woke up.
Dream comments: I had never dreamed about zombies before and I have never been more afraid in a dream. I had no idea it was a dream unlike the other dreams I had when I was in control and knew it was a dream. Ugh Strangest dream I ever had!
Dream title: Deep swim
Dream date: 2003
Dreamer name: Saia
Dream text: Dreamt that I was a nanny for a family; the husband was a scientist who conducted experiments in space. They were actually evolved fish, which is the reason for the experiment, but only the husband knew the truth. The wife would take me and her daughter out to check out the pier, (we lived on a dock) late at night.
Dream comments: I usually have VERY vivid dreams, interested in feedback!

Dreamer name: Eulogy
Dream text: I remember a guy in my room, and me showing him my bottle of sleeping pills, and they spilled all over the floor. Anyways I was supposed to take this guy home because he had to be at his aunts or something, and I was so tired so we lay on my back and the whole room turned blue. He had a bottle of water lying next to him and he lay at the opposite end of the bed. I remember it kept getting dark and then light and I could see a light through my window. I remember we fell asleep and when the morning came he told me he'd be right back, grabbed his water, and he left my room. Right after that I woke up and tears were rolling down my face.
Dream comments: It freaked me out. When I woke up, the mirror and my reflection was the first thing I saw. I felt like I didn't even sleep. As soon as I woke up I had this thought in my head. I remember being kissed before I went to sleep and anything I asked for while in bed, as long as I called his name, he'd get me. I thought of someone, not sure who it was, it was so weird. I don't know, I couldn't go back to sleep so here I am, and here I'll be.
Dream title: wild waters
Dream date: 10/april
Dreamer name: ts
Dream text: I was in the open sea with my husband. There was no one else around; there was no boat and no land. We were just bobbing up and down. When I looked down it was very clear and I could see the bottom of the ocean. The water was clear blue. I looked down and all of a sudden a shark swam under us. It had no bottom half and I could see its flesh. The water was rough now and there was a panic of fish, all around us. All of a sudden a black and white whale dived right over my head. My partner was now further away from me. I woke up in a fright.
Dream comments: I can't swim, and so i have a fear of water.
Dream title: White Buzzards
Dream date: 4/3/05
Dreamer name: Phoenix
Dream text: I dreamt a small flock of white buzzards were in a tree in front of me. They started closing in on me and to try and cover me with a white spider web. I said to myself that "Buzzards don't come after you". They backed up and let me pass.
Dream comments: I used to dream of a buzzard following me and scaring me when I was little. This dream is something new. I was careful not to be afraid of them.
Dream title: Cartoons
Dream date: 09/04/04
Dreamer name: Daydreamer
Dream text: I was sitting in a van full of cartoon characters and we drove to a bank and robbed it. We all had masks across our eyes (like Zorro). Tom & Jerry, some crazy birds, Roadrunner and Coyote, etc Dream comments: none.
Dream title: Mayhem on the Family Farm
Dream date: 4/11/05
Dreamer name: TT
Dream text: I was suddenly on the farm I grew up, where many of my relatives still live. Wild hogs were running rampant and attacking everything. I was on a riding lawnmower and trying to herd the hogs away, when two people started shouting to me that Bam Bam got hurt(my dog now). I rush to help him and I can see his paw is mangled. As I rush to pick him up, he is now a small boy with three fingers missing and bleeding. I take him inside where my family starts caring for him and I get back on the mower, angry and herding the hogs. But as I try to herd them and shift gears the hog sideswipes the mower and gets my left hand into his mouth and is crushing it.
Dream comments: none
