BOB HUND, singing in Swedish (but planning to record something in
English
in the future), and KOMEDA who are singing in English nowadays (but
their
first records were in Swedish) are both non-mainstream in terms of
record
sales and in sound too, I would say. They both have quite unique sounds,
if
you ask me (though KOMEDA may sometimes sound like a Swedish version of
STEREOLAB).

Well, prefarably atleast some ugly sides. for instance those of you who have
been wise or lucky enough to hear Nick Drake know that while he made the
world's most beautiful music, it had it's dark sides. and i dare say that
that hiding uglyness was a major part of the tear bringing beauty of his music.

Beause they wanted to get rich and famous. nobody goes big major because
they think they'd get more love, caring and understanding from there... they
just want to get a billion fans, fame and fortune... and that's why bands
will keep on doing it untill the end of time...
Ofcourse if were talking about progressive orchestral 180-piece magnum rock,
then you might want to go major just for the resources they have available
for recording, but i don't think that's the case concidering the times we
are living. (but wait 3 more years, and we'll be there!)
And as a few afterwords, i have nothing against somebody wanting to become
rich and famous or wanting a zillion listeners. actually i know a few rich
and famous people and they're quite friendly and fun.

ps. Sick Things International do indeed suck, and they have been long ago
banned from all finnish rock'n roll events containing good music.

Turning the back on the music industry and doing it by themselves? It's a
dreamworld!
We, I speak for myself and my band Fidget, couldn't have done anything without
a record company. OK, of course we could've if we had loads of dollares and if
there was more than 60 minutes in an hour. But we have not and there is not.
Making your own record means it takes a lot of time from what it actually means
playing in a rock band. Making music. rehearsing. Being creative.
And in our world we make music for ourselves but even more for the people who
want to listen to it. releasing a record of your own means you have to reach
all those people by yourself. today in Sweden. Where over 10 000 new records
are released every year.
Perhaps it would be easier now, when we have already made an album and at least
a dozen people know of us, but I definitely think we'll be going for a new
record deal. Preferrably something major. Because we don't have any problems
with that.
Mega Records was wrong on every point on how to run a record company, but we'll
have to give them credit that they did not on any crucial issue force us to do
anything. We always chose the singles, we chose the layout, we chose the way we
wanted everything to sound. We never compromised.
And I know we can get that again. Cause the rumours about the horridity of
major record labels are, in our opinion, clearly exaggerated.
And once again, it was our decision to leave Mega Records. They wanted to do
another album with us, but we turned them down. They lost and want revenge.

They've been trying to unsubscribe to the wrong address several times
now, and each time they will receive a note back stating the correct
procedure - and yet they do the same mistake over and over. I suspect

Question: Is the new format of the digest okay on your side?

The reason I'm asking is that it is sent out in MIME encoding with
the new listserver - and on my side (with the Eudora mail client),
it garbles up the digest - removing separation lines and the end
lines, ie. the "End of Digest Vol.97 #87" line.
If you do have problems with the format it is sent out today -
let me know and I'll create a digest list that sends out the
digest without the MIME encoding (ie. in normal ASCII).

yeah, I couldn't believe my eyes when I read in the latest issue of the
EttNollEtt magazine that Mr. Stringfellow will be producing their album.
Didn't they (Pusjkins) ever get to hear what he did on the Backfish
album???!!! OK, I never bothered picking up the said album after hearing a
track from it on a West Side Fabrication comp. As far as I'm concerned the
earlier track "Bless You" (on the "give ear!" comp) is by far superior,
capturing well what they sound(ed) like live: energetic, aggressive (but
not violent) and sensitive. Whereas Stringfellow's production makes them
sound lame, bland and middle-class.
If you ask me, the Pusjkins' "Avoiding Ground Loops" has perfect sound &
production and tunes are great too. But maybe they want to make their sound
more "radio friendly" or whatever.

Try listening to some of the newer Stereolab songs next to Komeda's "Pop
Pa Svenska" CD from 1992(Ha!). Either it's some huge coincidence (a
result of both bands having the same record collections?) or Stereolab
are very consciously "borrowing" from Komeda because they figure Komeda
have a relatively low profile outside of Sweden that no-one'll ever
figure out what their game is!
I'm sure Stereolab are nice folks though, I just feel Komeda should get
credit where it's due.
Plus, there are still plenty miles difference between the two bands to
make them both separate enjoyable listening experiences, in my humble
opinion.

I can't agree with you more. Live they are fantastic, and their older
(and "own", so to say) songs are utterly gorgeous. On the album there
are three tracks that I like, and the rest I can't even remember.

That would be fantastic! It was such a shame that Play Dough broke up -
they were really (IMHO) even better than Salt!
But I haven't really heard anything about Souls since the break up.
Does this mean it was Cecilia who left the band, and the rest decided
they didn't want to continue? And what is Cecilia up to these days?

Perhaps they were so overwhelmed by him being interested in them so they
did not even bother considering his skills? I know that the members in THE
PUSJKINS have had THE POSIES as their favourite band for several years. And
I guess it must be hard to turn down a chance to cooperate with a hero of
yours when the chance is given. I have not heard any old BACKFISH material
but I can agree that they sounded much better live than they do on their
latest album. But I guess I have to hear more than one of Stringfellows
productions before I can make any general judgments about his skills as a
producer. But he is up for a great challenge, because I also thought that
"Avoiding ground loops" sounded quite good.

According to some magazine I read a while ago (cant remember which one)
Cecilia claimed that she was the one who wanted to do something else and
that it came as a shock to the other members. They were not very glad about
it, according to her. But I do not know what she, or the others, are doing
at the moment. But I have doubts whether SOULS would be able to work
without her. But once again: I should not make any judgments in advance.
