Subject: NON-SCAN-INDIE: Cranes
Well, I just have to brag a bit about the Cranes gig in Stockholm that I
went to this tuesday. They played 17 songs, two extra numbers and it
was a fantastic gig. Last year when they played here with Slowdive they
played 16 songs, so I had to ask Steve after the show if they would play
18 songs when they play here next year (they're already booked!) - and
he said - why not? :)
The reasons for writing this on the Scan-Indie list are two:
1) Hi to Ludde who I met there (again). What did you think?
Sorry that it took some time before I recognized you. Though you
had problems with that yourself. :)
2) I got to meet the band after the gig - and even got to chat with
Alison Shaw. (I had to brag about it) :)

Chief,
You were lucky to get that Cranes gig up there; count yer blessings :-)
Look at their tour schedule for Nov/Dec. Then put it on a map of Europe.
There is a big hole in that distribution, and it's centered on Munich. Oh
well, maybe they'll come through sometime before they've metamorphosised
beyond recognition.
In consolation, so to speak, we got Killing Joke down here on the 16th.
This was a very, very good show, which well combined the old and new sounds
from them, which are quite different. I recommend them if you get the
chance.

Happy New Year to everybodyy!!
Does anyone have any idea if there are good record stores in Umea,
Sweden?? Preferably one that has lots of West Side Fabrication
available! A friend of mine is going there for some reason or another
and I'm trying to persuade her to get a couple of good CD's for me...
Thanks, tack, merci, kiitos.

Subject: my intro
okej, let's get this thing running!
upon getting incouraged to submit a message about myself, all i can do is write
one.
my name is fredrik blom, i study at chalmers (the civilengineering-branch) in
gothenburg. on my spare time i participate in chalmers' own rock-festival -
CHALMERSROCK, this year as the head of media with the staff.
i also work as the stagemanager at the "teaterladan" [ :-) ] at the
hultsfredfestival (the stage where all the great new bands played in 94:dub war,
elastica, ignite, verve, auteurs, cop shoot cop, slapshot, LPC, refused etc.).
my personal taste in music includes both pop and harder stuff. a short list of
top-bands might today look just the one below but tomorrow quite different...
oasis, smashing pumpkins, stereo mc's, levellers, buffalo tom, faith no more,
quicksand, urge overkill, dog eat dog, blur, juliana hatfield, weezer, pwei
and my following of the mighty beastie boys verges on the insane...
so where are the scandinavian bands you all scream while preparing a flameblast.
of course i like some swedish bands (wannadies, sator (the new cd is fantastic),
popsicle, mary beats jane, clawfinger (ok, half-norwegian), brainpool, girlsmen,
mindjive, misery loves co., etc.) but they're almost all pretty established and
- get the point - swedish.
this is really why i got on the list - there must be (to me) unknown bands out
there whitch i would dig and i'd like to find them all out.
one secundary objective on my being on this list might just be getting some new
cool talent to play at chalmersrock 95. maybe chsrock has not been known for
giving new talent a proper place on the festival, but that may well be in the
days of old now... if you want to get a band on our show, mail me directly and
not on the list with some info and contactable pointers. the event is taking
place at the sixth of may 1995 not more than 25 metres away from where i write
this (i.e. the chalmers "betonggaarden").
hope there are some recipients out there for my not so short letter and sorry if
i was somewhat out of focus...
see you all soon

Allright, so you're the one to blame for Cop Shoot Cop having to finish off
halfway through their gig, just because ORO's pathetic show dragged on and on.
The whole thing was handled pretty bad, don't you think?
BTW, to call Elastica great is to stretch the definition a little bit. But
Verve certainly were incredible.

okej i was a sitting duck for that csc-debacle. i can though tell you all who
saw the show that if i could have them conclude their set i would have. police-
permits about curfew-time were on the line and the decision about cutting them
off was taken over my head (i.e the festival officials). i can also tell you
that there is not one more annoying man alive than that henrik wallgren from
oro, he is so incredibly pretentious it could make you blow chunks. but all in
all it was handled really unprofessional, i must admit.
i have already gotten a couple of band-suggestions for chalmersrock and i want
more, keep mailing me outside the list about that though.
bye all

Now there must be other pages for music festivals as well
or am I wrong here? If you know of one/several/many - please
let me know so I can add them to our page!

A COMMUNICATION FROM STICKY RECORDS...
Hi, seeing as the topic of swedish pop has come up, i thought i`d
take the opportunity for a shameless plug. We`ve just released a 7"
pic. disk featuring 4 damn fine swedish bands- THE BEAR QUARTET,
BLITHE, PUFFIN and A SHRINE. It`s the first in our around the world
with sticky series. It`s also the most beautiful looking record
i`ve seen in my life. The next destination is the UK and is gonna
feature Boyracer (probably another song about boys), Heck, Cornershop
and a surprise band who i`m not sure i`m allowed to announce yet.
Well...back to the subject of Sweden, we also distribute a
compilation cassette featuring 8 bands from the god like A WESTSIDE
FABRICATION label. I think we`re the only place that has these now.
Coming up within the next 6 weeks is a new split single featuring
SUNSHINE who are from stockholm...that`s in sweden for the
geographically-challenged
well thats about all i guess. If you want any more info about prices
or our other releases mail me... sorry to anyone who gets bugged by
adverts on the net

Hi!
The Swedish band Cloudberry Jam will be playing here
in Tampere in a couple of weeks' time. I would appreciate
your views and opinions about what I can expect from
their music and stage appearance etc. whatever...
I've heard some songs by them, and I seem to remember that
they were 'interesting' to say the least.
Also, I've been told that Send No Flowers have split up, is
this so?

* Expressen, Friday january 13th
* Record Reviews - ROCK
22-Pistepirkko: "Rumble city, lala land". Score: 3 out of 5.
Ingenious fins, who aren't characterized by contour. On the contrary, they
are mixing wildly: chewing-gum garage rock from the 60's with a comical
plastic tune in their organ, nasty funky Stones-rock with loads of maracas
behind the guitar riffs plus a few stifled blues tracks, like if the sound
comes from a rat hole somewhere under the floor. Ticklishly ingenious.

* Dagens Nyheter, Wednesday january 11th
* Record Reviews
22-Pistepirkko: "Rumble City, LaLa Land" (Spirit/Sonet)
Title: Odd band invents hit after hit.
Picture: Esa Haverinen, Asko Ker{nen and Hannu-Paavo Ker{nen standing
outside by a traffic light. One of them is hanging from it.
Picture text: The best band in Finland. The trio in 22-Pistepirkko have
made twelve improbable hits - all in different styles.
Traditional rock usually wants to sound big and thick. Traditional rock-
singers usually wants to sound hard and dangerous. Traditional rock is
more than often very predictable. 22-Pistepirkko is not a traditional
rock trio. In spite of starting from old blues, rockabilly and garage rock,
in spite of their, with pleasure, use of sizzling fuzz-guitars, Shadows-
trembles and old pipe-organs.
Everything they do comes out as odd in some way. The singer H-P Ker{nen
sings with a light, thin voice that can't scare a fly. The band changes
style between every song - and are capable of some hard rumbles - but still
it always sounds somewhat thin. Sometimes it's acoustic blues on whisper-
volume with scarce slide-pickings and David Lynch atmosphere. Which slips
towards the Orient before it ends. Sometimes, they have found the world's
smallest drum machine and plastic synthesizer. Sometimes it's just the
balance of the sound-picture that is somewhat peculiar.
The strangest thing though, is that the music that comes out is so compact.
Never only eccentric for just being eccentric. Somehow these strange
arrangements lifts up one obvious chorus after the other, and make them
more distinct than a more conventional setting would have.
"Rumble City, LaLa Land" is twelve improbable hits with a common denominator
called ingeniousness. 22-Pistepirkko is Finland's most excellent rock band.

Interesting enough, they don't sound like they used to these days. Forget
about the 'la la la' EP. Forget about those early demo tapes they made.
Really. Listen somewhat to their album 'the art of being cool', but not
too much. The last time they played here, november 17th last year, I
thought I was listening to Cardigans. I can't describe their 'new' sound
better than that I think (anyone disagree with me?). The stage appearance
is also very similar to Cardigans. Jennie usually stands holding the mike
and holder in both hands singing into it, and the rest of the band works
for the sound (esp. Jorgen Warnstrom) lets his guitar have it (in some of
the songs anyway). He looks more like he would've enjoyed playing hard
rock more than what he's playing. Heh heh. Well, that could differ though.
It's just the feeling I got last time I saw them. They played a few old
songs that time, though I doubt they do that when they're playing outside
Linkoping (let me know, Kimmo!)
Here's a small "news article" the local paper 'Corren' had about them
last friday:
"Cloudberry to Japan"
The Linkoping-group Cloudberry Jam with lead singer Jennie Medin might
just become the new idols of japanese youths. Cloudberry Jam has worked
together with Eggstone and Ray Wonder on a compilation album that has
quickly sold 15.000 ex in Japan. Their album The art of being cool have
been a good seller and this spring they're a part of another compilation
album. In february, the band returns to the studio to record the follow-up
album which will be out in the stores this spring. The album will also
be released in Japan; the japanese record company are planning to make
Cloudberry Jam's glamourous (sp?) soulpop a best seller.
There's also a picture of Jennie Medin with the text: "Jennie Medin, singer,
and the rest of Cloudberry Jam are aiming at Japan."
Hope the info helps somewhat,
//Erik

Subject: New The Bear Quartet
I just picked up The Bear Quartet's new EP, which (for me) was a surprise.
Didn't someone say they would take a break, to write some film music or
something like that? On the inlay card, it says that the song "It only takes
a flashlight to create a monster" is taken from the CD "Everybody Else". A new
full-lengther from TBQ? Out when?! Well, a new EP is out and here's a small
personal review:
Artist: THE BEAR QUARTET
Record: It Only Takes a Flashlight To Create a Monster EP
Info : WeCD 089 1995
Label : A West Side Fabrication
Tracks: It Only Takes a Flashlight To Create a Monster
The Last Ball
Signal Box
The Dream
Roads Home
A silent and slow EP all together, though it's a beauty. For TBQ fans it's
a new direction (I feel). Acoustic guitars fills the air in "Roads Home"
only backed by a closet drum-beat. For others, it might be a new favourite,
though I wouldn't recommend the earlier albums and EPs to them. "The Dream"
is a 38 second plump electronic piano, which makes you wonder what happened
to the electric guitar fanatics TBQ once were. "Signal Box" is yet another
slow tune, with one-string-guitar riffs mostly throughout the whole song.
Some pieces of blues enters in the middle. And it ends just like you would
imagine a danceband (Swedish country) would. "The Last Ball" is a 45 second
synthesizer tone - handclaps - song. Imaginative to say the least. That
leaves "It Only Takes a Flashlight To Create a Monster", which is a beauty.
Acoustic guitars, trumpets, violins, and it sounds fantastic. In a way, sort
of like I would imagine Bob Hund in english somewhat. But it's stricter than
that. It's a beautiful song anyway, and worth the price for the EP.
My own personal rating (of 5): 3+ (average)

Subject: Cloudberry Jam/Candy Darling/Soon LIVE!
Hello, Scansters!
It's 3:20 am and I have just returned from the best live gig in
months, namely Cloudberry Jam, Candy Darling and Soon here in Tampere!
The only thing that prevented the night to be a perfect one was that
the club was not more than about half full, even less when the first
band, Soon began their set. I hadn't seen them for a while and they
had progressed a lot meanwhile. I might say that some of their songs
were a bit 'rockier' than their previous ones. Anyway, I might be
wrong, but I'm looking for their forthcoming EP, due out in March.
Next to hit the stage were Candy Darling. I had been told that they
were supposed to sound a bit like Pixies, which was a bit worrying for
me (as I am a huge Pixies fan). But, to my great surprise, they
sounded quite a lot like them, but not like a Pixies rip-off
fortunately. Imagine the poppiest Pixies songs sung by Black Francis
without any screaming whatsoever, and you are quite close to Candy
Darling's sound. They had an incredible amount of songs that would be
international pop hits in a perfect world! Also, the vocalist/bass
player was the definition of 'cool' if I ever saw one on stage...
The last band of the night were Cloudberry Jam. Erik S. said in his
posting earlier that they sound a bit like Cardigans, and I really
can't disagree (though I'm not an expert on Cardigans' music). Great
stuff, and their stage appearance was quite pleasant - especially the
guitar player who played the Rickenbacker couldn't stay still for more
than a second at a time... :-)
I also talked briefly with their singer Jennie after the set (she
told me to say hello to Calle Jershed in Goteborg, so here you go :-)
She also said that they will start recording a full-lenght album very
soon (next week?)...my memory is a bit hazy. Unfortunately they
didn't have nay of their records to sell with them :-(
I also asked if Jennie knew our listmaster Erik Soderstrom, but she
didn't think so... :-)
To sum up, it was a great night of different styles in pop music, and
I hope the Swedish bands will continue to play a few gigs every now
and then over here!
I could write more, but I'm going to go to sleep now...

OK, here's a gig guide for Stockholm:
Friday: Bobsleigh + Stevepops (indie-pop, at Studion)
Saturday: Tiamat (death metal, at Studion)
Monday: Nils Lofgren (well, you know..., at Gino)
Monday: Traste Lindens Kvartett (folk punk (??), at Studion)
Monday: Chaos UK + English Dogs (punk, at Cafe 44)
Tuesday: Traste Lindens Kvartett (folk punk (??), at Studion)
Wednesday: Wayne Kramer (former MC5 guitarist gone solo, at Gino)
That's it. Maybe not so much of interest, but what do I know? If you need
addresses to any of the venues mentioned above you can contact me.
Cheers, Marten

Here's a message from Sami - it was meant for the whole list, but he
mistakenly sent it to me instead, thanks to the usual post-pop
extravaganza state of mind and body... :-)

Ain't that the truth! Why won't anyone pay for them to make a record?
What's the matter with the labels in this country?!

But they told us to write to the North of No South label directly.
Anyone have the address handy? Thanks.

I don't think there's anything interesting this weekend, but on Tuesday two
of Swedens most interesting new bands - Honey Is Cool and Yvonne- are playing
at Gino. Could be worth checking out.

Subject: New Releases (TBQ & Cardigans)
I just got some information about new releases from Cardigans and
The Bear Quartet. Apparently TBQ's new full-length CD will be out
in about two weeks and Cardigans' new will be out on the 8th of march,
which is said to be even better than "Emmerdale".
Good news indeed!
