Subject: the new Bob Hund album
Hej/Terve/Blessadur everybody, I've made it to Sweden, and the new
Bob Hund is out. OK I missed Hultsfred, but they wouldn't pay me soon
enough :-(
The LP's called 'Bob Hund' again, it seems, so maybe we should call
last-year's 20-minute album 'The Sheep album' and this one 'The Bread
Album' just so we can tell the difference... Anyway, it's really, really
good. BH are perhaps closer to Pavement than anyone else I can think of,
and 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain' was my favourite of 1994 so far, but the
Bread Album has a range of emotion and rhythm and feeling and invention
that even Pavement can't quite match. Here there's a more of the standard
indie sound than on the Sheep album ('100 }r', 'L{nge l{nge') but Bob Hund
play with sound and noise that makes even the most normal tracks here
sound completely unnormal. Little tunes arrive and disappear again,
Thomas Oberg sometimes screams, sometimes whispers, and harmonises with
himself in what seems to be the only technological change between this and
the first album. The harmonies are what make 'Ett gipsat l|fte'
beautiful, and what make bits of 'Den Nollgradige' almost remind me of the
Beatles' weirder moments.
'Ett gipsat l|fte' starts the second, brilliant, half of the album; it's
followed by my favourite track right now, 'Det skulle vara l{tt f|r mig
att s{ga jag inte hittar hem men det g|r jag; tror jag' ('It would be easy
for me to say I don't find my way home, but I do; I think'). Here in the
long, gloriously energetic coda there's the same mix of joy and pain that
James put into 'Sit Down' -- a way of getting absolute certainty out of
uncertainty, without stopping being uncertain...
Oberg's lyrics seem much darker than on the first album. Gone are the
simple images and ideas -- here nothing is clear except a lot of pain and
confusion, and a kind of surreal escapism. In the end, it's not
frightening at all, but consoling: Bob Hund understand the dark things,
and their music is a way through them. Hopeless still, perhaps, but a way
through.

than words from between shame and fortune' (from the final song, 'Dur och
moll omvartannat')

Can someone tell me about this new remix disc of hers that was put out?

Hi folks,
I just got a new CD by Swedish band SEASHELLS on Marsh Marigold. As it is the
seventh release of a Swedish band by this German label I wonder how popular and
known these bands are in their home-country. I'm talking about:
- Acid House Kings
- Red Sleeping Beauty
- Seashells
- Poprace
along with some of the Snap/Soap bands these are my favourite Swedish bands.
"The boy still dreams" by the Acid House Kings was definitely one of my summer
hits.

Last night they played "sick and tired" by the Cardigans on 120 Minutes, what a
great song, the perfect end of the summer-hit.
They don't have any Cardigans stuff at Rhythm, so I thought this list is the
perfect place to gather information about the band and their releases.
Is there a cool mail-order where I can order Swedish records which are
unavailable outside Sweden?
Are there any other videos by them?

I heard they share a member with Puffin, and are supposed to sound a bit like
Pavement, and that sounds like a perfect combination to me!

Saw them in Hultsfred, but weren't too impressed. I think the drummer used
to play guitar in Puffin. Since he is not schooled in drumming his style was
kind of odd. They would probably have benefited from staying in the rehearsing
room a little longer.
Don't know about the comparison with Pavement. I only heard a few songs by
them and disliked them all.

Well, since i LOVE Pavement (anyone in scandinavia who missed their scandinavian
tour should be ashamed of themselves...! :) I reckoned they would probably suit
my tastes better, so I bought "Hooray" yesterday anyway.
And, I like it. Quite a lot, I think. (Only listened to it 3 times.)
It reminds me more of Archers Of Loaf than of Pavement, but that's not
necessarily a bad thing.
It's also quite jazzy in places, and IMHO at least a very interesting album.
Something that can't really be said about much music at all these days...

Hej/moi mina tysta v{nner!
Making my way at high speed through this month's 'N|jesguiden' I saw
that one of journalist Martin Gelin's recommendations for 'B{st just
nu' is a single by Bob Hund on the Dilettante label called 'Edvin
Medvind'. Does anyone know anything about this? Why is it not
on Silence records?
I was going to ask about that song anyway, because it was one of about three
that they played at their gig in Stockholm a month ago that I didn't
recognise (another was 'H{r {r en hand}' I think). Are these tracks
available anywhere? The gig was utterly wonderful, by the way, the
best I have EVER seen. I was pretty much emotionally and physically
exhausted for days after... (that's my excuse for not posting a review here,
sorry =])
...and if anyone's going to see Hedningarna at Gino next week, give me a
shout (come to that, if you're in Stockholm, give me a shout: det skulle
vara kul f|r mig att tr{ffas med n{gon n{ra hemma, s{ det vill jag, tror
jag)...

days? Or have I been taken off the list? Somebody please say
something...
ObMusic: Read in the Rumba magazine a couple of days back that
the mighty Deep Turtle will be (or will have been, now) the very
first Finnish band to record a Peel Session. Cool. Now, what I'd
like to know is whether there is a British person on this list who
could do me a huge favour by taping that thing for me when they
broadcast it... e-mail me and we'll work out the details.

Well _I'm_ still here anyway! And still far more ignorant about Swedish
indie music than I'd like to be (I mean, I haven't even heard any
_Popsicle_ yet!) because of not knowing what to listen to on the radio
here. OK, there's P3's musikkanalen, but they waste so much time playing
Traste Linde'ns Kvintett (sp?) and so on. Oh for a svensk version of
Radio Mafia...

Well, this British person is still in the wrong country to help you. So
what are Deep Turtle like then? My knowledge of suomalainen indie stops
at Aknestik (kiitos, Kimmo) I'm afraid.

Oh, well... Radiomafia is okay, I guess. They play far too much
meaningless techno pop (2 Unlimited etc.) but at least they have
a couple of decent shows, like the John Peel show I mentioned.
The commercial radio stations around here are totally worthless, so
that makes Radiomafia seem like a heaven on earth in comparison, but I feel
they could do better still...

A definition of Deep Turtle? Boy, that's a hard one. They've often
been filed under the fusion core category, as if all they ever did
was listen to Nomeansno records for inspiration, but lately they've
pretty much grown out of that and are now a very original mix of
ethnic (latin american and oriental), hard core, jazz and pop
influences. Sort of difficult to describe, actually! "Somersault
Twist" was a term used for their music once, and it sounds somewhat
correct to me. New album _There's a Vomit Sprinkler In My Liver River_
out now on Bad Vugum.

If you are in the Stockholm area, you should definitely tune in Radio Bandit on
105.5. Their airplay is clinically free from techno and hit list stuff, and they
play a lot of songs by Dinosaur Jr, Breeders, Lush, and the likes. I even recall
hearing Popsicle on Bandit.

Speaking of Finnish independent music: can anyone tell me what happened to the
incredible band Mana Mana, from Joensuu I think. Their album 'Totuus Palaa' (sp?)
from a few years back was so impressing, but I haven't heard anything since then.
I seem to remember that Mana Mana shared a few members with the equally great
Joensuu band Psychoplasma.

Whaaaaat? I have to say I've been avoiding Bandit, because while they
don't play any 2 Unlimited they seem to make up for it by playing vast
amounts of crap American rock. And the quality of the DJs is really
rock-bottom -- it's a relief when the adverts come on. Maybe the
Stockholmers find it entertaining having stupid Americans doing their
radio for them, but I find it almost unbearable.
Maybe I'll try again though...

Subject: New Puffin CD
News about the new Puffin CD - "Soundtrack" reached me yesterday through
Jocke (Mr West Side) when Carpe Wade played live here in Linkoping. He
told me it had been delayed for another two weeks (so it'll be out at
the end of this month).

Yes, Mana Mana, definitely a legend. Unfortunately they are no more,
since the guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Jouni Mommo died a couple of
years ago, apparently during his stay at the hospital where he was
treated for his schizophrenia. A major loss, no doubt, even though
the word has it that toward the end he was pretty much out of it,
and probably would not have been able to keep the band going anyway.
I don't recall them having released anything after _Totuus Palaa_,
but I might be wrong. There was a tour, however, some time after
Mommo's death, with the rest of the band (including Otra Romppanen
of Psychoplasma fame) playing old Mana Mana songs, as a tribute
to the deceased.

Titles and notes from the band's own playlist (ie. hard to tell what it
said sometimes).
I don't remember that last song, but it was a "known" one - ie. a cover of
Magnus Uggla or something like that. It started as Beastie Boys "Sabotage"
(on request) though. :)
For those who haven't heard Carpe Wade - They're compared with Rage Against
The Machine, Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers (all in a mix). I'd say
"Hardcore with a twist".
Songs like "Waisted" and "Headdown", from their latest EP definitley sound
like Rage - others have influences from everything between Matthew Sweet
and Red Hot Chili Peppers. They do have a point about the Pearl Jam AND
the Red Hot Chili Peppers AND Rage Against The Machine-influences on the
"Porch Light" EP (their first EP - first track "Porch Light" - a bit like
Pearl Jam, second track "Medicine" - a bit like Red Hot Chili Peppers, third
track - "Wanna Be" - a bit like Rage Against The Machine) and fourth,
"Waisted", like I said earlier - a _really_ Rage-comparable track.
Jocke (the owner of the West Side label) was with them and had loads of
things to say (which he did as well). I don't know what to write from all
of that, but it looks like Hardy Nilsson is the best selling West Side
band at the moment. If you don't count the Swedish-singing bands, The Bear
Quartet came at #1, Carpe Wade at #3 and A Shrine at #4. Now that I write
this I can't remember if Fireside came #1 or #2. Well, the first and second
place could be mixed. Read it as you please. Jocke was very surpised that
Puffin hadn't made it to the top 3 though (as surpised as I was) - maybe
an example of not-so-good marketing, he thought. He also revealed who wrote
Mufflon 5's songs - but I don't know if I can tell anyone. They made it
sound like a "trade secret". I have to ask Jocke about it first.
They have signed their first "outside Sweden" band - "Penniless People of
Bulgaria" - and will release a full-length CD with them any day now. I
just can't remember where they came from, though I think they were from
Finland.
Got their latest marketing-purpose folder, titled "When it all comes down to
this: you're alone - A West Side Fabrication [Sample]" with photos by Sofia
Dahlgren, which included a discography (that's why I posted a new one a few
days ago :)) with yet-to-come releases such as new full-length'ers from Blue,
Puffin and Mufflon 5. The 'West Side' introduction text says:
"A West Side Fabrication -is an independent company based in northern Sweden.
The label, since founded in 1987, has taken the position as being the most
inventive and radical label in Sweden. A West Side Fabrication were first
to sign and promote bands such as Popsicle, The Wannadies, and This Perfect
Day; today, these bands are a part of the elite of Swedish popmusic. 17 bands
are signed to the label. Many of which have gained an enormous amount of
attention both in Sweden and abroad. The Bear Quartet, Mufflon 5 and Blithe
are bands that habe recorded live sessions for the John Peel Show in England.
With all this focus on the label, many fans have been made from all over the
world; some fans have written letters expressing their love and affection as
real fans do. A West Side Fabrication has started three daughter labels,
Jazz Beat for a jazzy sound and with a special focus on singer/songwriters,
Speech is a friendly friends label and Buffel is a label for bands that sing
in Swedish. A West Side Fabrication is the guarantee for new and exciting
music. It's the trademark for personality, and a chance for an artist to
develop and release records. [got a cooler sounding name]"
Jocke had three copies of a new Promo they were distributing to who-knows
including new songs from Puffin, The Bear Quartet, A Shrine etc, but wouldn't
sell any of them. I'd get one in the mail later though he promised, so I'll
write a review of that one when I get it.
Partly _Good News_ on the Estonian indie scene as well - I told him about
Bizarre and Morningrise from Estonia, and he was interested to hear them
so I promised to send what I had (which I did today). He thought my
definition of Bizarre (ie. "better than Slowdive even") sounded promising
enough, though he had about 50 tapes (a week?) to listen through.
I won't write anything about the rest of the night but that if you like
to party - get to know these guys. :)
Interesting facts:
1. Daniel Soderberg who play guitar in Carpe Wade, play bass in A Shrine.
(if I didn't get all of it completely wrong).
2. Everyone (including Jocke) agreed that Blue's song "My Day" on the
"West Side strikes back vol IV" compilation is _really, really_ good.
3. Ekan (from A Shrine) is West Side's best song-writer.
4. The reason why we don't see A Shrine on tour is - no-one requests them!
(EVERYONE OUT THERE - PLEASE TELL YOUR LOCAL "live" PLACE TO DO THIS!)
5. Fredrik wanted to have a contest with Jocke to decide who would drive
back to Skelleftea (about 1000 kilomteters). (Jocke drove to Linkoping).
6. Trastocksfestivalen 94 (Woodstock (uhm.. in Sweden)) was free - and no-one
liked the fact that Expressen (a big evening newspaper here) had said the
fee was 230 swedish crowns.
7. Next year (for the Trastocksfestivalen), they had been told they had to
build a bridge to some island, and have the whole thing there (or was it
just to get the campers a place to sleep? Something like that.)
8. Jocke got two tickets to the Hultsfreds Festival this year - but he didn't
have time to go, so he gave them away to Fredrik (Carpe Wade) and Ekan (?)
(A Shrine). They showed up, and was interviewed on MTV's Headbangers Ball
while they were dead drunk. Jocke's comment: "heh, good spokesmen for the
West Side label...". Someone said he was ashamed about the whole thing. :)

You're right there. Penniless People of Bulgaria are indeed Finnish
and have released over here one album on Poko Rekords and later two
on their own. Haven't really heard any of them so I can't comment on
sound (but I've been told they're sort of Pixies-influenced).

Umm, I'm sorry for not having kept you posted but the sad fact is that
Morningrise have split up. Bizarre, on the other hand, have released
an "official cassette version" of their demo -Beautica- backed with
a couple of brand new songs ("Pearlshell Fairy" and "Paint the
Silence") which sound at least as good as anything they've done
before. I don't have the address here at hand, but if anyone wants
to know how to obtain a copy, just say so.
