Subject: CM 205 CDROM drive and OS2

I have been using the CM 205 CDROM drive by Laser Magnetic Storage Company
successfully under MSDOS 5.0. With OS/2 I have several problems.

My first attempt was to boot an external DOS session to install the device
driver and MSCDEX.EXE. This seemed to work, but I then got several
"Drive not ready" or "Error reading drive M:" messages, when I actually
accessed the drive. In one case I could then read the directory,
in all other cases even that was impossible.

Installing the drive in an OS/2 -Dos session was impossible, the
installation of the driver ended with a "Memory Limit Error" and was then
aborted. Furthermore, MSCDEX.EXE complained about an incorrect DOS version,
and this could not be influenced by the setver command.

Has anybody got this drive to work under OS/2? The drive seems to be
quite popular as it is sold in large quantities and at a very low price
(in some stores as cheap as about 270 US-$) here in Germany.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Hiya there! I haven't read all of the current articles yet, so if I am
rehashing old news, pleas forgive me. I have two problems:

1) Switching problem

During a full screen dos session I was using some comm. software (mirror II).
My modem is on com@. I switched back to the PM (using CTRL-ESC). When I tried
to switch back to the dos session, all I got was a blank screen! I had to
switch back to the PM and can that session and start over. Anyone know why?

2) Major OS/2 2.0 CRASH

In a full screen dos session I tried to run IPX.com which was configured for my
16-bit ethernet card at IRQ-5. The system seriously jammed! CTRL-ESC would not
work. CTRL-C and CTRL-BREAK would not work. CTRL-ALT-DEL would not work!!!! I
had to hit the reset button and wait for CHKDSK to finish repairing
SWAPPER.DAT. Anyone got a clue?

There is a beta version of the MS LAN Manager 2.1 Requestor for IBM OS/2
2.0 workstations available; however, the server portion itself does not
run under OS/2 2.0. I've also gotten the IBM OS/2 LAN Server 2.0
Requestor to log onto an MS LAN Manager 2.1 server, but I doubt it's
officially supported.

IBM LAN Server 2.0 Entry will run on OS/2 2.0 and is very similar to the
MS product, however it lacks HPFS386 support. (You can run IBM LAN
Server 2.0 Advanced, which supports HPFS386, on OS/2 2.0... but the
HPFS386 portion itself won't run on OS/2 2.0 so it becomes pretty much
the same as IBM LAN Server 2.0 Entry.)

Currently, there is a beta program for IBM LAN Server 3.0 which runs on
OS/2 2.0 and supports HPFS386 on OS/2 2.0. It's an extremely impressive
program, even though it's still in beta test. If you want to be in the
beta test program, contact your local IBM Marketing Rep/Systems Engineer/
Branch Office.

Organization: Potsdam College of the STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK (SUNY)

Hello everyone! I have three new and exciting questions for the group:

1) My computer now emits a strange high frequency hum that it did not emit
before I installed OS/2 2.0. Anyone know why? The hum changes in pitch with
certain actions and programs. I have an IDE drive incidentally. I don't know
if that is relevant or not.

2) I got PMFRA2 via anonymous ftp. For some reason, after exiting the slashed
lines that indicate a process is running did not disapear from the icon. Has
this happened to anyone else? I shredded the icon and reinstalled it and it now
seems to be behaving.

3) Is there any special settings I need to change when I add more memory? The
reason I ask this is because I added 2.5 more megs of memory and have not
noticed any speed change in the performance of my OS/2.

I discovered a wonderful application of OS/2 today: Network Database debugging.
By running a Database application I am working on in two dos windowed sessions,
a network environment is simulated! I can test sharing files and all that sort
of thing! To think I have been driving 30 miles to the site that I am
writing this application for to use their network instead of just doing it on
OS/2!

It may be my imagination, but I don't seem to get this so much if I
allocate a big swap size to start with - e.g.

SWAPFILE=c:\os2\system 2048 8192

but its early days ...

On a totally different subject, does anybody know if there is (or is
likely to be) an OS/2 driver for the Backpack type tape streamer. It
seems to me that this ought to be a likely candidate, since control
via the parallel port ought to be straightforward?

Some simple questions: Is anybody aware of a utility-package like nortonutils ?
Is there a version for OS2 expected ? What are the prices ? I'd like to have
access to my HD about the way I have it under DOS, to defrag or make a backup of
the "FAT" if HPFS has something like that. Usually it is better to be prepared

From: ROME@FEDC06.FED.ORNL.GOV (Jim Rome, 9201-2, MS 8071, 4-1306)
Subject: The new OS/2

You can get a new beta copy of the WinOS2_3.1 OS/2 by calling 800IBM-3040.
I just received mine and installed it. Since it comes with BOTH versions of
Windows, and 3.1 is on a separate set of disks, DO NOT install Windows in
the OS/2 installation unless you want both versions. (Or, you can delete
the \os2\mdos\winos2 directory and its contents). So, do the selective install.
Then install Win3.1 from the separate disks. And, You will have to edit
the DOS settings for each windows application to use the AUTOEX31.bat file
in \winos231.

So, with that out of the way, I booted up and received a trashed PM screen.
Icons had green backgrounds, and redraws didn't work properly. This was a
manifestation of the problems I had with my Trident card under the old
Windows. Despite the supposed OS/2 2.0 support, I have never gotten my
Trident Impact III card to work with anything other than the plain VGA
driver under 2.0.If I went to a full screen, the PM screen got trashed.
Now, with the 32-bit engine, this happens on boot-up. I had to replace
the Trident card with a Video7 VRAM. It worked fine. But, I have been unable
to figure out how to get any Super VGA support (which was claimed to be there).

Windows apps are MUCH snappier, and the overall graphics seems improved also.
I now think that OS/2 runs Windows as well as Windows also.

I complained to IBM about the Trident card problems. They replied that
Trident has has hundreds of complaints, but that they refuse to talk to
IBM. They also suggested that I needed an AMI BIOS dated later than 5/92
(mine is from 1989) since there are "non-obvious problems with OS/2 otherwise."
The problem is that the latest one available is 10/91 from Everex, and
AMI will not deal with individual customers.

Anyhow, the new OS/2 is worth getting, especially since it is free.
YOU WILL HAVE TO REFORMAT THE OS/2 PARTITION, however.

The prg starts, but when i try to open a file it gives me a "GP fault

anyone know if there's a switch to make it work, if it will work under
OS/2's 3.1-compatiblity, or if SYSTAT will provide a patch ?

- after upgrading one of our DOS-based workstations, i had to learn that
there is no software available to drive the integrated tape streamer
under OS/2 2.o. Is this so (i called SYTOS and they will deliver r.s.n.) ?

BTW: when will Windows 3.1 - compatibility for OS/2 2.o be there ? Is there
a date known or is it Real Soon Now ?

Hello !

I have to install a HP-Deskjet 500 C driver with Compaq OS/2 Ver. 1.2 Rev. B.
Unfortunately this printer is not supported and we can not use the newer
OS/2 version - that would support this printer - since our application will
not run with.
But then I read in os2-faq Ver. 1.9d about the possibility to install
the printer drivers supported by OS/2 2.x. This seemed to solve my problem.
I got a new version of IBM OS/2 2.2 and tried to install the DeskJet driver,
but no way ! The printer installation failed with an (undocumented)
"Error:(800)" telling me that a file called "EpsonDat.DLL" must be in the path
pointed to by "LIBPATH". I checked this and found in C:\OS2\DLL a file
EPSONDAT.DLL 66048 10.04.92 12:00:00 -A-
(the date is written in the german notation DD.MM.YY)
and in config.sys I found a line like:
LIBPATH=C:\OS2\DLL;

If someone has an idea what is wrong here, please let me know.
Pleas mail directly to me, as I am not a subscriber to this list !

Thank you very much in advance,

I have an Iomega Bernoulli 90MB drive that I want to use with OS/2 (1.3).
The machine configuration is an IBM Model 80-A31 with a 300 MB SCSI hard
drive. My question is, what do I need to use the Bernoulli drive under
OS/2. Iomega says I need a driver from them which costs $90. Someone
suggested using the IBM removable drive driver. Where can I get this.
Also, has anyone ever run the Bernoulli off the IBM SCSI port (I also
have the Iomega SCSI interface card but am not sure if it is really needed).
I was told that I can but was not given any other information. (Also will
be using OS/2 2.0 soon).

Any information would be useful.

I had a similiar problem with MSC 6.0. The message I got when starting
up PWB was that the system could not autoload PWBHELP.PXT.

I called the OS/2 hotline
and they directed my attention to the README. file OS/2 installation leaves
in the root directory. It states that to get Microsoft Codeview to work,
delete the file PWBHLP.PXT.

When I did this, it cleared up several different
problems I was having with PWB. (It also states that when using protect mode
version CVP 2.2 to trace through the source code rather than the assembler
language.)

Although this isn't exactly your problem, I hope it helps.

It's more complex that that.

First off, the PDF editor thinks the brackets are unprintable; thus, I
think you're gonna get periods no matter how hard you try. Correct me
if I am wrong, I have to do MVS C as well. (I cheat though, and use VM.
See thirdly, below.)

Secondly, *real* brackets x'AD' and x'BD' (I think) are not the 3270
character set brackets, which are down around x'40'.

Thirdly, if you were on VM I could send you an XEDIT which does the SET
INPUT/SET OUTPUT translation you need, but you're on MVS, so there is no
third item.

Fourthly, have you considered trigraphs?

Fifthly, my TN3270 terminal emulator (Sun OpenWindows) actually gets the
brackets. I don't know why, and just thank the gods.

You don't say what you really tried, so here is my guess:

You used MB2 to tear off one note, then minimized everything. You can't
create a new note from a note, you have to be in the Sticky Pad itself.
You can't seem to get the Sticky Pad to redisplay, showing you a blank
Note 1 to tear off and write on.

This is a known bug in Sticky Pad, where the main pad is off the corner
of the screen, where you can't see it. Use Ctrl-Esc or two buttons to
bring up the list of apps. Select Sticky Pad (not a note) with MB2 and
Arrange or Tile or Move it. This will allow you to see it once again.

At that point, everything should be hunky dory again.

Well, I have gotten their first problem reports, and I guess I would

doesn't try to do much. In the second place it is buggy, both on the
outside, where there are incorrect results and on the inside where the
code leaves a lot to be desired. But worst of all, they sent out
some bugs that are pretty serious for CDROM users (broke their systems)
and then sent out paper fixes which were not right.

IMHO, they should have called each customer, asked enuf questions to
decide if they were affected, sent fixes in a rush on diskette to
affected customers, queued the fix for next fix shipment to unaffected
customers. But "the cost is prohibitive...." Clear and simple and
wrong. Sayonara. Dave

Wrong right back at you. It's true that HD-IO is not normally done
via DMA, and I don't know why OS/2's paging requires it, but it does.
That's what IBM's techs say anyway, and it is true in my experience.
I have 20 megs of RAM that are fully supported by my BIOS, an IDE
drive and an ISA bus. I have installed the GT16MB fix. OS/2 uses the
area above 16 megs on my system *only* for paging.

You are correct in pointing out that *some* IDE drives as well as some
SCSI setups will enable OS/2 to use memory above 16 megs on ISA bus
machines directly--sorry I had overlooked that. Nevertheless, it is a
good idea to check out your own particular setup and its capabilities
*before* investing in the extra RAM.

> So: no problem with >16MB on a very standard (ISA & IDE) machine, but

That, too, seems to be the case for the reasons you point out, but
cannot be generallized to *every* standard ISA & IDE machine or
*every* machine with advanced hardware. I know of others like you
with an ISA+IDE combination who are able to use >16MB, but it doesn't
work on my own machine and I also know of others for whom it doesn't
work. There are people with sophisticated bus-master SCSI controllers
who can't seem to get that 16MB barrier broken, and others who have
succeeded. I'm not well enough informed to know why there is such
variation, but I do know that many have experienced probems using more
than 16MB of RAM and thought it prudent to raise the flag for those
contemplating a memory upgrade who might encounter unforeseen
difficulties.

By exchanging E-mail with some of the development chaps at Boca. I'm
not enough of an expert to personally verify what they said, but it
was the straight skinny from the development people, not the tech
support people who sometimes change their stories from one day to the
next. There are techs and techs, of course...

I tested my BIOS to make sure that it responded properly to the
interrupts that OS/2 uses to measure memory size by reporting the 20
megs, and it did. I then tested how much memory OS/2 actually uses
and it uses 16 megs. The only element on my machine that can't do
what the techs said they need done is the DMA controller... QED. As I
said, I have an IDE drive.

I use three different OS/2 memory mapping utilities (plus a couple
that bombed out) and they all agreed that OS/2 was using 16 megs of
RAM on my machine. I got these utilities from ftp-os2.nmsu.edu
(Hobbes to some of us)--two of them were later reviewed by another
chap who claimed they used programming techniques which made them
unable to *measure* greater than 16MB chunks, and the third the one
posted by this same chap who claimed that *his* version could and had
done so on his own machine.

My machine consistently reports 5MB free with 20MB of physical RAM, so
it sounds as if your machine uses the full 24 megs and my machine uses
16, with enough difference in configuration to slop 500K or so.

Last night i tried this my own (for the first time, i admit). I was

It askes int 12 and int 15/88 about my memory and finds 640K + 23M.
This was what i would have expected. *BUT* some lines further down it

A further report about OS/2's use of >16MB of RAM on my system.

Pursuant to Thomas Greve's suggestion, I checked the date of my os2ldr
file. It is the second release, that is the most current version of the
gt16mb fix. Having determined that, I followed Mr. Greve's second
suggestion and used the debug version of the loader to check its memory
use. The following are the pertinent lines from the debug output:

OS2LDRD 07July92
CGetDHPhysMem
I12 640
I1588 19456

PhysMem:
Base 00000000 Sz 000a0000 Loc 00000001 Cac 00000000
Base 00100000 Sz 01300000 Loc 00000000 Cac 00000000

BaseMem1:
Base 00000000 sz 000a0000
Base 00100000 sz 01300000

Low/High/Ex Mem = 640/15360/4096 K

BaseMem2:
Base = 00000000 Sz = 000a0000
Base = 00100000 Sz = 00f00000
Base = 01000000 Sz = 00400000

This information seems to me to indicate that the loader finds 640K of
usable low memory (I12) and 19456K of usable high memory (I1588).
This is, indeed, all the available physical memory in the system. It
then evaluates something (there's a bunch of data I don't know how to
interpret) and assigns base addresses for using portions of this
memory (BaseMem1) so that the low memory is used from base 00000000h
and the high memory is used from base 00100000h. It then further
evaluates something and divides the memory even further into low, high
and "extra" memory, finding 640K of low, 15360K of high and 4096K of
"extra". It assigns new base addresses (BaseMem2) of 00000000h,
00100000h and 01000000h respectively. This corresponds to using
memory under 1 meg for low memory, memory above 1 meg and under 16 meg
for high memory, and memory above 16 meg for "extra" memory, and also
correlates accurately with my observations and measurements of how
much memory OS/2 is using after the desktop is active.

According to the information I have gleaned from IBM, this means that the
top 4 megs are being used by OS/2 as a paging pool. This is used for
OS/2's paging before and in preference to swapper.dat to minimize disk
access, so it *does* have a useful place in the system. It is *not*,
however, used directly by OS/2 for active system and applications code or
data.

My system runs on an AMI MkII 386/33 AT motherboard with 64K SRAM
write-through cache, 20 megs of physical memory on the motherboard and a
Quantum LPS240AT IDE hard drive.

The DEBUG LOADER you mention is included in the GT16MB.ZIP fix file
from IBM. It's name is os2ldrd, in contrast to the production loader
which is named os2ldr. To use the debug version, you must first
arrange for an ASCII terminal attached to COM2 of your OS/2 machine (I
used a null modem cable attaching it to my notebook with a terminal
program in local mode at 9600 baud 8N1). Then unhide os2ldr, rename
it, install os2ldrd, rename it to os2ldr and run ATTRIB +h +s +r
os2ldr to hide it and mark it as a system file. Then, with the ASCII
terminal set to capture, just boot OS/2. The debug information will
automatically be sent to the terminal via COM2.

Allan, I will leave the rest of your question to those better
qualified to answer... and eagerly look forwared to learning the stuff
myself!

Paul,

you mean: correlates with your experience, that this `Ex' mem is not
used as part of the usual memory pool -- as you state below.

This is what my ldr sais:

I12 640 # INT 12: 640K base mem
I1588 23552 # INT 15,ah=88: 23MB ext. mem
[...]
Low/High/Ex Mem = 640/15360/8192 K
[...]
BaseMem2:
Base = 00000000 Sz = 000a0000
Base = 00100000 Sz = 00f00000 # the loader seems to distinguish
Base = 01000000 Sz = 00800000 # between < 16MB and > 16MB

This all corresponds to what your loader sais. But OS/2 seems to use
my 8MB `Ex' mem as usual memory. So there must be another difference.

Well Thomas the output is correct. At least for your hardware :-(
ISA-Bus Systems are restricted for 16 MB of memory for code to run in
cause of their bus not being able to adress the memory above this
barrier. For this reason OS/2 uses the memory above 16 MB as a fast
paging-space.

Before you laugh too hard at this, consider how much modification would
be necessary to make something similar for OS/2 (then laugh too hard).

On the programming line I have also managed to write a batch file to
partially implement the main Windows (tm) features under UN*X:

display title screen
display "Windows cannot find a device driver needed to run
Windows in enhanced mode:"

display "vddpga.386"
wait for a key press
set the screen to some hideously naff bright colours
if random number <0.8 load shell program else crash system
if random number <0.9 let user choose program, else just show
a mouse pointer moving around
:loop
if random number <0.5 goto success
display "Unrecoverable Application Error"
display " OK "
wait for return to be pressed
goto loop
:success
run the user's application
goto loop

If anyone has the source code for the random crashes during
applications, please let me know so that I can update this code to
more fully conform to the Microsoft implementation.Pete Appleton

Howdy. I noticed an oddity with IBM TCP/IP 1.2.1: From time to time,
I notice a second copy of SENDMAIL running. I notice constant
disk activity (like a blink every second), and no mail arrives.
As soon as I kill those tasks (KILLEM.EXE, shareware works great),
and restart sendmail -bd -q30m, I start receiving mail again.

Just thought I'd let someone know.. It's strange.. -turgut

Subject: OS/2 2.0 version 3.1 beta program

Hot off the presses:
PRE-RELEASE IBM OS/2* 2.0 - 32-BIT GRAPHICS ENGINE and WIN-OS/2*
VERSION 3.1 BETA PROGRAM

September 16, 1992

OVERVIEW

IBM is initiating a beta program to obtain testing and development
feedback for the OS/2 32-Bit Graphics Engine and WIN-OS/2 Version
3.1 capabilities. The code is being made available for testing
and development feedback purposes only, and should NOT be used in
production.

DESCRIPTION

The 32-bit Graphics Engine is a full 32 bit implementation of the
OS/2 2.0 Graphics Engine and Graphics Programming interface. It
includes a full 32 bit implementation of the XGA and VGA device
drivers, and is fully compatible with existing 16 bit device
drivers. New features that developers can now take advantage of
are increased system limits for graphic objects and handles and
support for Palette Management on XGA adapters. The 32-bit
Graphics Engine will be of interest to OS/2 2.0 users who need to
evaluate Seamless PM/Windows Mode with high resolution (1024x768)
XGA and selected SVGA support.

WIN-OS/2 Version 3.1 provides the ability to run Windows**
Standard Mode applications which should execute with improved
performance and application integrity over WIN-OS/2 Version 3.0.
It includes support for the level of display and printer drivers
that were shipped with Microsoft** Windows 3.1, as well as the
3.1 level of support for Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) and
Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE). New features include Seamless
PM/Windows execution on XGA, and unique AUTOEXEC.BAT files per
VDM. WIN-OS/2 Version 3.1 requires the accompanying 32-bit
Graphics Engine to run.

PREREQUISITES

- Requires a test system capable of executing OS/2 Version 2.0

- Does not support installing over OS/2 1.3 or OS/2 2.0. You
need to reformat your partition.

ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS

For customers without local branch office support or remote
customer locations, a notice will be posted on CompuServe providing
a toll free number to order one set of diskettes for their
enterprise. This program will end on December 15th, 1992.

SeRVICE PACK ADVANCE INFORMATION

IBM intends to produce two versions of a Service Pack for OS/2 2.0.
One version will contain fixes for OS/2 2.0 and will include the
32-bit Graphics Engine, which will replace the 16-bit Graphics Engine
when the Service Pack is installed. The second version of the Service
Pack will only contain fixes for OS/2 2.0. Both of these Service Packs
are designed to be applied to the OS/2 2.0 product as released in April,
1992. However, they will be mutually exclusive; only one of them can
be applied. If you apply the version containing the 32-bit Graphics
Engine and later decide that you do not want it, you would have to
reinstall the original OS/2 2.0 and then apply the second version of
the Service Pack without the 32-bit Graphics Engine.

The version of the Service Pack containing the 32-bit Graphics Engine
is targeted to be available electronically at the end of September via
IBM LINK OS/2 BBS, CIS, NSC BBS, INTERNET, IBM CANADA OS2BBS, and other
external sources. Diskette availability will depend on manufacturing
schedules and constraints. The target is currently the middle of
October.

The version of the Service Pack without the 32-bit Graphics Engine is
targeted to be available electronically around the end of October/EARLY
November, with diskette availability approximately two weeks later.

The APAR's currently available for inclusion in the Service Packs are
listed below. Please bear in mind that this is a preliminary list.
IBM continues to make and test additional fixes and currently has fixes
for 60-80 additional APARs in final code and test. APARs will be added
as testing completes.

Please use the following information for your planning purposes, and not
as a commitment to deliver any specific APAR, or to guarantee any
specific delivery date.

Full Service Pack contents, delivery mechanisms, and availability will
be announced once the Service Packs are completed and schedules are
formalized.

Subject: Sytos Backup

>From pg.5 of Sept 14 PC Week:
IBM and Sytron Corp. agree to distribute new version of Sytron's
popular backup and archival software to OS/2 2.0 users.

Under the agreement, IBM will market Sytos Plus File Backup Manager
1.35, a backup package designed for OS/2 2.0, which includes
software-based data-compression and backup capabilities that support
HPFS, extended attributes, and longer path names. The software
will run in 32-bit mode, and can backup 120MB in about 20 minutes.

Version 1.35 also includes improved backup/restore performance and
the ability to view volumes faster for large sets. Automated and
unattended backups can be programmed. The $295 product will be
available through IBM dealers or directly from Sytron of Westboro,
Mass. (no phone number given).

"Registered users of OS/2 2.0 can upgrade for $45 from IBM."
(exact quote, not exactly sure it really means what it says)

Does this mean one must already own an earlier version of Sytos
backup to upgrade for $45? Or can ANY registered OS/2 user get
the whole enchilada for $45? You be the judge.

No mention if this package uses a tape streamer, or is strictly
floppy-based. Anyone have more info?

Subject: .ini files

Phillip,

You know, I had some experiences with those darned *.ini files. Last night
, in fact. My os2.ini had grown to 142k and my os2sys.ini had increased to
550k. This is quite a change from my originals of about 40k and 20k
respectively. Well, I tried doing the ALT-F1 deal and it did not work.
Evidently, somewhere down the line, my two *.ini files had been copied over
the two in the /install subdirectory. So, now knowing what to do I booted
via install disks and erased my os2.ini and os2sys.ini, from both the /os2
and the /os2/install directories. Then I re-installed. It came up
alright. I've reconfigured my desktop the same as it was before and now
the two files only take up 80k and 35k respectively. Now, what made those
ini's grow like kudzu and take over my system? Before I erased and
reinstalled I was booting (from the beep after the CAD when it actually
starts loading the op sys) in 75 seconds. Then, immediately after
reinstalling (for several measurements) I booted in 43 seconds. Now, after
doing some configuring I'm up to 60 seconds. What in the world is OS/2
doing now that it evidently was not doing then?????

We _must_ have an os2.ini and os2sys.ini editor that will work for 2.0.
And I would like to have something that will track what the system is doing
at what times so I can figure out what's delaying it. I know exactly when,
during the boot, the system slows down, and when it speeds back up. It is
a complete mystery to me.

Subject: CHECKINI & .INI

Has anyone tried the CHECKINI prgm found at Hobbes?

It's supposed to check your .INI (OS2.INI & OS2SYS.INI) for old redundant stuff
and report them and optionally kill them off. I did manage to do the former and
found I've PLENTY of 'pointers' to deleted files WAY back in the 140Kb and 81Kb
INI files. However the problem lies in unable to kill them off.

CHECKINI advertises it will remove the useless stuff and write back only what's
useful if you specify the /C switch. It not only did not do that but it
actually increases the .INI sizes!

Has anyone got CHECKINI (in CHKINI_01.LZH) to work as said?

You don't say whether you have installed the latest REXX libraries.
Several INI file utilities use REXX functions that didn't work
properly in the GA release. The latest ones I know about are in
REXX20.ZIP dated 7-15-92.

CHECKINI is an .EXE and not a REXX script, unlike SHOWINI.

I am interested in the problems you have (a man forewarned...).
We do not have *basic* problems so far: the backup gets done, and
we are able to restore files - as long as we do not expect requesters
to work during either, and only use VGA.

We have basic problems! In our LAN (two main server Mod.95 each 1.2GB disk,

all machines running OS/2 1.30.1 later 2.0 with IBM LAN Server 1.3)
I cannot prevent users from accessing the servers during
the backup phases. They are working on a large text-database and writing
stuff on the server machines 24 h a day. The daily backup (ca. 600MB raising
to 1GB) needs more than one hour, so the backed up dataset is not consistent
all the time. The monthly backup consuming 2 GB today and up 7GB at the
end of the year runs 4 hours and will run up to 12 hours. Well, Sytos has
problems working with inconsistend backup sets. So nearly half of the
backups get unusable because Sytos is hanging due to the stated problems.

For the future i am in need of a software, working with inconsistend
file sets during the backup, using file compression (I would need up
to 4 tapes for backing up 7GB) and supporting backup set splitting accross
many tapes. I know of tape software supporting this features, but i don't
know if they support IBM 2.3GB Tape Drives (external).

If the database does not contain support for consistent backup during
operation, I doubt whether is any package in the world that can make
a consistent backup during updates! It has only recently become
possible in the mainframe world by special hardware that allows you
to hold all updates to files in non-volatile storage until the
backup has completed, and still this requires support in the database
managers (you need to define which files are related to each other
and should be backed-up in the same point in time. In addition the
database system has to assure that all changes are committed to DASD
for all files (a 'sync' point), before the backup starts).

Would it not be your best bet to simply do a disk-to-disk copy
of your related fileset while somehow you disallow updates during
that backup window? It will cost you extra disk(s) of course, but
23h30 minute availability cannot be achieved for free.
You can then at leisure backup the copy-disk to tape.

Typical mainframe TP systems run 23h30m or 7x24h minus 1 hour
which is *called* 24h availability to soothe the users.
These databases have a LOG which can be used to restore all transactions
from the point of the full dump.

Now as to speed: our 1.2 GB disks run 730KB/s (they are HP disks), this
is a bechmarked value on our server for file transfers > 10MB. The
2.3GB tape drive has a max speed of 250KB/s (if I remember rightly), but
as we can observe from the light it's duty cycle is not so nice. Our
backup does 1.1GB in 106 minutes, or 172KB/s, *but* our disks are on the
same controller as the tape drive, so we might possibly almost double
the speed by adding a separate controller.

So if you want raw speed, you need extra disk(s) with an extra SCSI
controller, and I think you can reach a disk-to-disk transfer rate in
range of 700-900 KB/s, depending on your disk speed. That means it
would still take 15 minutes to copy 600 MB, if all your 600MB must be
consistent. So you will still have to stop operation for 15 minutes in
that case...

The other option is: buy a *real* tape drive, for instance an IBM 3480
compatible tape cartridge drive. These typically can run in the
1.5-3MB/s range for SCSI attached controllers. You need to dedicate a
controller to get the speed, and the backup software may not be what you
want. We have one, but do not use it for backups. With current $ value
you can ship them from the US to Europe for half the price you can buy
them for here ($10,000-$15.000 range).
The problem currently is the tape capacity: the current PC-attached
drives only put some 200MB on a cartridge (18 track non-compressed). I
expect we will see 36-track double length with compression comping up,
which puts them at 1.6GB, and will also mean an increase in data rate.

Ok Dave let me try to tell you what I've understood:

OORexx is the new fronteer of programming.

Every language has its own limitations, for example C and C++ are language
for experts and however not for novices, on the other hand there are
languages like Visual Basic which is really simpler to use even for a
large number of computer users. The problem is that each language if is
simple to use it is even not so powerful, and the tired VB user who wants
to reach some objectives, probably will have to study more and start to
use C or C++.

The SAA Rexx Development Data System Division hope to solv this problem
with OORexx. OORexx will be as simple as today's Rexx but powerful like a
real OOP language, and will permit the use o mixted language as well as
sharing of objects among these other languages (if necessary).

As far as I know, OORexx is followed by the Division in New York. I don't
know if there are other work-goups in England.

I've followed the conference of Richard K. McGuire and all I've told you
is what I've understand from what he sayed.

Now let's come to EPM.

EPM stands for Editor Presentation Manager. After the exit of Personal
Editor 2 (PE2) IBM continued to develop the editor internally calling it
"E" and nothing other. The first version I've known was E3 (3.10) and
then 3.11 and 3.12 an extremely powerful DOS editor composed of two parts
an EXE and a EX part. The E.EX was the pseudo code of all the compiled
*.E files. The *.E files are text files written in a language very
similar to REXX with improved performances, and editor oriented (in the
first versions there were inly integers). You can think to E language as a
middle way among Rexx, Modula2, Pascal, and C... and as you can guess it
is really a POWER!

Ok, let's continue, then the folks continued to develop it and a 4.x
version came out to support DOS as well as OS2, with new features like
dinamic profile loading and releasing (there were the 64k limit for each
profile (= E.EX file)).

In the end with Presentation Manager they decided to implement this editor
so that they called it EPM as I wrote before, vers. 5.x. I have used old
version of EPM untill 5.20 the last available on PCtools in IBM. I must
say I know better E3 as EPM uses many PM functions that I'm not aware of.

The good news are that EPM once IBM internal use only, became the today's
distributed Enhanced Editor of OS/2 2.0 (in V. 5.50), but this was not so
interesting because it was distributed without the compiler (ETPM) and the
source code for the *.EX profiles. Finally a week ago I found on the

The files and their significance are listed in EPMBBS.TEXT which is
one of the files available at that site.

REDMOND, WASHINGTON, U.S.A., 1992 SEP 28 (NB) -- Microsoft
Corporation says it won't make its target date for Windows NT,
which the company had said would come to market by the end of
1992. The new date is now "early 1993," with Microsoft officials
saying that it "needs more time to respond to customer
suggestions for improvements in the Windows NT system."

[much sniped]

Walker would not confirm that the final product would ship in the
first quarter, but told Newsbytes that by the end of November or
in early December he probably would be able to set a shipping

Hi folks!
Just thought I'd drop a note to any "Dinosaur" TV show fans
that I've posted a file at ftp-os2.nmsu.edu which contains four
scans of the same show's characters (baby dino just hatched,
earl going to work, and fran and robbie each freaking out).
The file is named dinobmp.zip and is, for now, in the /uploads
directory. The pictures were originally scanned 256 color gif
files, but have been converted and dithered into 16 colors
suitable for viewing on the standard 640x480x16 desktop (at
least until real svga drivers arrive ;-) Considering the 16
color dithering, they look pretty good, and they sure do liven
up the dull old grey WPS. Just unzip, drop into /os2/bitamp,
goto settings-->desktop-->background, and enjoy.

OS/2 comes with a generic CD ROM driver that supports Toshiba and IBM
drives fully. Other SCSI drives are "sort of" supported with a litle
tweaking. A new CDROM_G.SYS driver is now available that provides
better generic support for SCSI CD ROM drives. You must also have the
appropriate SCSI driver for your SCSI host adapter card.

The CD ROM is supported as an installable file system via a file named
CDFS.IFS. The file system is installed in the same way that the HPFS
file system is installed, and supports many of the same parameters.
In particular, the cache size may be specified with the /C: parameter,
and the number of sectors read and buffered for each read can be
specified with the /M: parameter. I am currently using a 512K cache
buffer (/C:16) and am very pleased with the results.

Folks, you are not going to believe this. Reprinted below is part of
the text from an article called "Microsoft Testing Word, Excel" from the
September 14, 1992 INFORMATION WEEK(page 14):

Is it or isn't?

While Microsoft Corp. last week reaffirmed that OS/2 2.0 support for
Microsoft Mail, LAN Manager, and SQL Server is "within the company's
plans" the Redmond, WA, software giant denied mounting reports that it
is far along in its development of at least two application packages,
Word and Excel, for archrival IBM's 32-bit operating system.

"It's something we evaluate all the time," says Pete Higgins, VP of
Microsoft's desktop applications group. "But we are not working on
native [OS/2 2.0] applications right now."

According to independent sources, however, Microsoft is indeed preparing
OS/2 2.0 versions of its popular Word word processing and Excel
spreadsheet progrmas, and one source even claims those versions are
already in some form of beta testing. Another source adds that MS has
hired 3 of IBM's own marketers to help promote the products.

William Bluestein, an analyst with Forrester Research Inc. in Cambridge,
MA, also confirms hearing that MS has nearly completed both packages.

..sources says the OS/2 versions of Word and Excel are being developed
by secret OS/2 programmers working in MS's office in Israel. That site
is known to be developing an OS/2 subsystem for MS's forthcoming 32-bit
operating system, Windows NT, which is due to ship in the first quarter
of 1993. The subsystem would allow Windows NT to run OS/2
character-based applications.

Subject: OS/2 Future Trends and Directions
Organization: Dept. of Econ., Univ. of Chicago
Date: Sat, 26 Sep 1992 01:28:11 GMT

Today IBM Chicago held its monthly OS/2 User's Group meeting. This
month's meeting was devoted, in large part, to a presentation by two
OS/2 experts from Austin (mainly delivered by Don Crabtree).

I thought I'd post a report on that meeting and what these two
presented. Disclaimers: these aren't official IBM pronouncements, all
information is subject to change, etc., etc. A lot was covered, so
I'm bound to make some mistakes. Also, I am only familiar with half
the acronyms, so bear with me. :-)

Multimedia was largely glossed over in this presentation (since it
will be the exclusive focus of an upcoming meeting), so I do not
mention anything about MMPM/2 and other multimedia topics here.

As of approximately two weeks ago, 1.4 million copies of OS/2 2.0 had
left the factories, excluding internal copies, copies supplied to
ISVs, promotional copies, and electronically delivered copies. IBM
estimates that one million OS/2 2.0 users are now out there.

Among notable products, WordPerfect 6.0 for OS/2 is set for an early
first quarter 1993 release if all goes well. Hopes are still alive
for a year end release, but the date could slip.

A 32-bit Novell NetWare Server for OS/2 2.0 is expected at about the
same time.

The Developer's CD-ROM is now available. It contains full online
programming and redbook documentation, Book Reader/2, beta versions of
development tools (Workframe/2), OS/2 2.01 (beta, i.e. the Win-OS/2
3.1 update, etc.), LAN Server 3.0 beta, TCP/IP beta, C++ beta, and
much more. The cost is approximately $30. I'll post details on how
to obtain this CD-ROM in the near future in comp.os.os2.programmer.
This product is part of the "new IBM," you might say: six weeks from
conception to delivery. (Left unsaid was that it was a response to
Microsoft's NT CD-ROM. It was also a one-up on them; these are beta,
not "pre-beta" tools, there's a lot more on there in many ways, and it
comes at a third the price.) IBM expects they'll have a second CD-ROM
release in mid October -- a quick follow-on indeed.

Now, where is OS/2 headed?

By year end the following enhancements will be in place [meaning some
will obviously be delivered well before December 31]:

** LAN Server 3.0. It will contain multiprocessing (asymmetric) and
peer-to-peer features, among other things.
** 32-bit graphics engine. (*)
** SuperVGA drivers ("...representing 80 to 90 percent of the
marketplace...") (*)
** Reduced memory requirements. A standalone OS/2 2.0 station which
now requires 4.5 MB will be trimmed by one megabyte to 3.5 MB, i.e.
OS/2 2.0 will really fit in 4 MB. (*)
** Improved performance (in addition to the RAM diet). (*)
** Windows enhancements (i.e. Win-OS/2 3.1 with TrueType, multimedia
extensions, bitmaps, and applets). (*)
** Systems management enhancements. Specifically, remote network
installation and remote network maintenance will be improved and will
include more than LAN Server networks.
** LAN transport enhancements (i.e. NTS/2). NTS/2 contains additional
protocol stacks (Appletalk (!), NetBIOS/BEUI, IPX, DECNet, OSI, SNA, etc.)
All you need is a NDIS driver to run the whole show. NTS/2 can be
ordered separately and will be included at no extra charge in such
products as LAN Server, TCP/IP (presumably), and other network-related
add-ons.
** First DCE toolkit. Programmers will be able to take advantage of
DCE/RPC.

The (*) items will be delivered widely, electronically (through such
facilities as Internet ftp), as free updates. (Systems management
enhancements will be enabled in the base product, but they aren't
useful without a network requester and a server.)

In 1993 ("OS/2 2.x"):

** Win32/Win32s API compatibility. This was a surprise, frankly. But
it was there on the overhead transparency.

[Just to editorialize, this could cut both ways. On the one hand OS/2
is essentially remaining a superset of Windows "forever," i.e. if you
have OS/2 you can always run more. Meaning it is more attractive for
consumers. On the other hand you might ask whether developers should
write for the OS/2 API. But, then again, developers don't dictate OS
markets, consumers do. If OS/2 is more popular, and, other things
being equal, OS/2 users prefer native OS/2 applications over Win32
applications, then developers with native OS/2 versions will have an
advantage. What would be truly bizarre (devious?) is if IBM
implemented the Win32 API before Microsoft did, which is certainly
possible with these new, modern OSes given that the API is rigidly
defined. BUT I DIGRESS.]

** Security. B2 level features will be incorporated; C2 certifiable.
Read on.
** Network thresholds enabled. Several customers expressed the need
for reducing network traffic, and IBM is introducing this facility
where you can, for example, set a spool threshold such that output for
the printer won't cross the network until enough bytes have been
spooled. At least, that's what I think they meant.
** Distributed PM and X client. Meaning your PM applications can
execute on another machine across the network and display on your
local machine, even a machine running X. (The reverse is already
possible with Unix workstations, i.e. an X program executing on a Unix
workstation can display on the OS/2 PC with TCP/IP plus the X server.)
I should note at this point that the presenters pointed out that DOS
will live into the late 90s, and that they plan on offering a version
of the Workplace Shell for DOS. A WPS equipped DOS workstation could
also participate in this fashion, with Distributed/PM, which would
make a lot of 8088 and 80286 machines more useful. They admitted,
however, that the performance would be less than stellar, simply
because these machines are slow. But they would be put to good use.
** Pen/PM, i.e. support for pen input devices and paradigms.
** "Generic Client" support, meaning that network requesters from
multiple vendors will ship in one package, and you just select which
one(s) you want on installation. This package will be open to all
network suppliers.

In 1993 to 1994 ("OS/2 3.x"):

** DCE/RPC. This offering will solidify and expand across all IBM
platforms in this time frame.
** POSIX compliance.
** C2 certification granted. (It takes approximately 12 months, and
software is certified in combination with hardware.)
** Symmetric multiprocessing (SMP).
** Portability, based on the OSF/Mach 3.0 kernel.

IBM should have a demonstration at Comdex/Fall of OS/2 running atop
the OSF/Mach 3.0 kernel, a parallel database demonstration, and more.

[The presenter noted that the OSF/Mach 3.0 kernel has advantages over
the NT kernel, specifically, as an example, in I/O handling.]

The missions given to Taligent and Kaleida were also discussed. In a
nutshell, Taligent's mission is to borrow from the best of both IBM
and Apple, create standards and enhancements, and license back
technologies to the parent companies. Since IBM and Apple together
control over 50% of the market in personal computers, they hope to
promulgate standards more effectively in tandem. OS/2 and AIX will
continue to evolve (as will DOS, for that matter, with the
aforementioned WPS version). (It was left unsaid, but OS/2 will be
the "mainstream" operating system while AIX will be targeted at
markets where something more than POSIX compliance is demanded; I
suspect there will be a lot of "cross polination" here, but that the
two OS tracks will merge only as fast as the market dictates.)
Taligent may itself offer its own operating system in the distant (in
industry terms) future, but it was characterized as more of a niche,
high end product rather than as a mass market item.

Kaleida's mission is similar, namely to choose the best technologies
from the parent companies, to standardize and enhance them, and to
license them back to the parents (and promulgate them throughout the
industry). However, it was admitted that Kaleida's mission will be
much more difficult.

Incidently, the naming of Pink was explained. When IBM and Apple met,
the Apple representatives brought several 3x5 index cards, with
components of their key technologies written on each card. These
cards were tacked onto a bulletin board and were used in the
negotiations. The cards describing features found in OBS (Object
Based System, the Apple follow-on to Macintosh System 7) were pink.
OBS was then referred to as Pink, and the name stuck. Pink is but one
set of technologies from which Taligent will draw in creating a new
set of standards for a new, object-oriented operating system.

I've been to a couple of these Chicago meetings now, and this meeting
had its share of chuckles (mainly arising out of questions from the
audience). For example, one person asked whether "reduced
requirements" meant that OS/2 2.0 would now operate on 80286 machines.
(Answer: no, OS/2 1.3 remains the 80286 OS/2 offering.) Another asked
whether 8088 and 80286 machines could be hooked up to AS/400
minicomputers to "boost" its processing power (by tying the machines
together with DCE/RPC). (Answer: not really.) IBM customers, to some
degree, remain a conservative, traditional group. Which is terrific,
in some respects. But when was the 80386 introduced? 1985? Those
8088 machines just can't be obsolete. :-)

Bundling was discussed. According to the presenter, OS/2 2.0 is now
bundled with all IBM 386SX or better PS/2s, some PS/1s, and select
Dell systems. (On other Dell systems it will be preloaded at the
customer's request.) IBM is currently negotiating with nine other
vendors who wish to bundle OS/2 2.0 with their systems. Also, hard
drive manufacturers have approached IBM with interest in selling hard
drives with OS/2 2.0 preloaded. The presenter also expects you'll see
software bundling (e.g. systems bundled with, say, OS/2 2.0 and Lotus
1-2-3/G).

So, that's where OS/2 is heading, in summary, according to the
presentation.

OS/2 Still Suffers from IBM's Lack of Foresight.
By Jim Seymour
.
The distribution screwups of OS/2 2.0 have been widely reported. But
there's a darker side to IBM's weak support of OS/2 that hasn't been
reported--its lame, often insulting non-support of applications
developers eager to port their products to OS/2.

I've heard these stories over and over from developers since late
last year. It sounded odd to me: IBM know applications sell
operating systems; IBM knows that early, wide support of OS/2 by
apps developers is important. Why else would IBM spend so much
money on subsidy deals with large developers?

But not all the essential support for a new operating system
comes from the Big Boys. Especially when the biggest of the Big
Boys, Microsoft, seems very unlikely to sign up as an OS/2
developer. Sure, IBM has Lotus, Borland and WordPerfect, but a
broad range of software support is what's going to drive buyers
to OS/2.

Yet the stories for small developers about IBM turning a deaf ear
to their requests to join the team continued. When I tracked
them down, few of those developers were willing to provide
specifics. They made it plain they were afraid to anger IBM on
this. They still hoped to develop for OS/2

NOVELL SEES THE FUTURE IN UNIX; OS/2 REBUFFED
Novell bids on USL takeover with UnixWare in the wings.
By Cheryl Gerber

On the eve of the formal rollout of UnixWare, Novell Inc.
officials last week acknowledged they see the future in Unix, not
OS/2.

The launch of the UnixWare desktop operating system, slated for
October 12 at NetWorld, will begin what analysts expect to be an
expanded interest in 32-bit Unix technology, and away from IBM's
beleaguered 32-bit OS/2.

"The reason we're in Unix is we woke up and realized that

OS/2
wasn't going to be it," said Peter Troop, a Novell spokesman.
"Novell long assumed that OS/2 would be the platform to field a
32-bit operating system that is hardware-scalable and supports
application integration on the network."

Novell has not been bashful about its preference for UnixWare,
sources said. They said the LAN giant has worked closely with
major software developers, including WordPerfect, Informix, and
Lotus Development Corp., to get them to commit to shipping
UnixWare versions of their most popular applications by year end.

"There is no question that UnixWare is a strategic platform for
Novell, while OS/2 has become a check-off item," said Jamie
Lewis, an analyst with the Burton Group, in Salt Lake City.
"There's no question the relationship between IBM and Novell has
chilled."

.

"There have been discussions for Novell to take a larger stake --
even to own 100 percent -- of USL, because Novel considers USL
strategic in its battle against Microsfot," said Roel Pieper,
chief executive officer of USL. Novell currently owns about 5
percent of USL.
[
Peiper had a rather lengthy article in last weeks Open Systems Today
where he blasted NT with every dirty trick in the book... including
irrational things like implying that Windows 3.0 UAE's were an
example of what NT would be like.

Unix International had a huge multi-page ad where they had a
lot of extremely prejudiced graphs show things like Unix app
availability and number of users. Careful readings of
the graphs showed them to not be outright lies... but
it was all very misleading.
]

.

Univel officals said the UnixWare OS, slated for commercial
shipment by year end, will be NetWare ready with Novell's SPX/IPX
protocols built in. Users will be able to share files and
printers as DOS and OS/2 do now, without an NFS server with
TCP/IP as an add-on NetWare Loadable Module.

.

IBM did not return calls by press time.

OS/2 2.0 users impatiently await native applications from Microsoft
By Doug Barney and Ed Scannell
.
So far, Lotus Development Corp, is the only major vendor to
commit a broad suite of its native applications to IBM's advanced,
multitaksing operating system.

Overall, users prefer that applications under OS/2 run natively
rather than in the Windows compativility mode. True 32-bit OS/2
2.0 applications not only provide superior performance, the users
said, they also offer tighter integration than their Windows
counterparts.
.
Despite persistant rumors that Microsoft has developed key
applications such as new, 32-bit versions of Word and Excel, the
company continues to deny any OS/2 development plans.

IBM SHOWS KERNEL OF MULTIPROCESSING OS/2
Technology would allow multiple operating systems on the same PC.
By Cate Corcoran

NEW YORK--IBM demonstrated microkernel technology that will
enable multiprocessing in OS/2 during Unix Expo here last week.

The technology will also enable object-oriented software and give
users a wider choice of applictions, the company said.

IBM showed OS/2, OSF/1, Unix, and DOS running as applicaitons on
top of a Mach microkernel on a PS/2. The applications were
resident in the same machine bu could not run concurrently.
.
[Several speculations by third parties as to when it would ship.]
IBM said only that the microkernel technology could find its way
into actual products in five years or less. The company has said
in the past that OS/2 3.0 will be based on Mach.

Subject: Service Pack news from IBM 10/01/92

The following was released by IBM on 09/30/92:

---------------------- Start of article ----------------------------

OS/2 2.0 SERVICE PAK ADVANCE INFORMATION UPDATE

September 30, 1992

This is an update to information posted September 18, 1992.

IBM intends to produce two versions of a Service Pak for OS/2 2.0.
One version will contain fixes for OS/2 2.0 and will include the
32-bit Graphics Engine, which will replace the 16-bit Graphics Engine
when the Service Pak is installed. The second version of the Service
Pak will only contain fixes for OS/2 2.0. Both of these Service Paks
are designed to be applied to the OS/2 2.0 product as released in March,
1992. However, they will be mutually exclusive; only one of them can
be applied. If you apply the version containing the 32-bit Graphics
Engine and later decide that you do not want it, you would have to
reinstall the original OS/2 2.0 and then apply the second version of
the Service Pak without the 32-bit Graphics Engine.

The version of the Service Pak containing the 32-bit Graphics Engine
was targeted to be available electronically at the end of September.
IBM has been working feverishly to meet that target. However, based
on feedback generated by the earlier announcement and results of
testing, we have decided to include additional fixes in the Service
Paks. These fixes require additional code and test time. In addition
to testing these fixes, IBM is performing tests on the Service Pak as
an entity to ensure that the individual APAR fixes are compatible when
integrated into the system. IBM continues to make and test fixes and
to assess the content of the Service Pak to ensure that the proper
fixes are included and that high quality fixes are delivered.

The version of the Service Pak containing the 32-bit Graphics Engine
will be made available electronically via IBMLINK OS/2 BBS, CIS,
NSC BBS, INTERNET, and other external sources as soon as it is ready,
meaning that it has the proper content and the right level of quality.
The current outlook is that it will be available prior to mid-October.
The version of the Service Pak without the 32-bit Graphics Engine
will be available at a later date.

Full Service Pak contents, delivery mechanisms, and availability will
be announced once the Service Paks are completed and schedules are
formalized.

Please use the following information for your planning purposes, and not
as a commitment to deliver any specific APAR, or to guarantee any
specific delivery date.

The APAR fixes currently available for inclusion in the Service Paks
are listed below. The fixes added since the previous announcement are
listed first. Please bear in mind that this is a preliminary list and
that the information about availability refers to target dates.
Additional APARs are being addressed on an ongoing basis. APAR fixes
will be added as testing completes.

Subject: New files on software.watson.ibm.com & ibm suggestions

There are some new files on software.watson.ibm.com.

These include a new comm.sys patch, another release of the enhanced
editor, and visual rexx among other things.

While it is nice that IBM has made the ftp site available and is
using it, the OS/2 section is beginning to become a mess.
It would be nice if IBM started to make subdirectories off of
/pub/os2 so that the files would be a bit more organized.
A 'new files' directory would be very nice.
