Phoebe's Fishmen

In 1976, Robert Temple published the first edition of his controversial book "The Sirius Mystery." Back then, as it is today, theories of Paleoastronautics were considered extremist by many researchers, even in a frontier discipline like ufology.

Terracotta from Nineveh (height 12.6 cm) depicting the amphibious deity Oannes or a priest in the attire of Oannes. R. Temple argues that the main deity of the African Dogon tribe is similar to this deity.

However, Temple's extensive expertise and the sheer weight of detail in his arguments earned him respect from a very broad literary audience. His message was certainly courageous, if not considered crazy. Temple argued that a tribe in West Africa, known as the Dogon, in their oral tradition, possessed certain evidence of ancient visits to Earth by highly evolved amphibious beings from the star system known as Sirius.

In the book, Temple also asserted that the Dogon knew that Sirius was a system consisting of three stars. In 1976, the existence of Sirius C had not yet been proven by Western astronomers, which they now recognize as probable. Temple has written eight books, including "The Genius of China," "Conversations with Eternity," and "The Complete Fables of Aesop," the latter in collaboration with his wife Olivia. He is a member of numerous professional societies studying ancient cultures and history, including the Royal Astronomical Society.

One might think his knowledge was so extraordinary as to preempt any criticism, but critics did indeed arise. Astronomer Carl Sagan discredited Temple's arguments, suggesting that the tribe had learned of Sirius B in 1920 from French missionaries. Other critics claimed there was no evidence of an oral tradition among the Dogon.

However, Temple was undeterred. In fact, in the revised reprint of his book, he proposed even bolder statements than before, including hypotheses on where the ancient visitors from Sirius might currently be located. Temple was interviewed by American radio host Zoh Hieronimus on "The Zoh Show," broadcasted by WCBM on 680 AM from Baltimore, Maryland, on October 9, 1998.

Radio Interview with Zoh Hieronimus

In the introduction to the new edition of the book, you mentions a series of events that occurred after the first publication in 1976. One episode in particular involves a visit from intelligence agents who did their best to destroy her...

"You never know who is doing these things to you, but whoever they are - and I know for a fact that the CIA is involved, because I was told clearly - they tried to destroy all my opportunities for work and income. I was the victim of a very coherent and coordinated campaign, designed to annihilate my image, undermine my work, damage my reputation, and steal important research materials. Recently, someone also sabotaged my computer files. It's quite annoying.

Why do you think you represent such a threat?

People who know about the existence of alien life want to control information. They probably see it as the main security element in the world now that the Soviet Union has fallen and there is no Cold War. I can understand why they are going to such great lengths, but I am convinced that their attitude is wrong. In my opinion, they are arrogant, they believe they have the exclusive right to know these things. They do not sympathize with people like me, a loose cannon who moves freely in her research, outside of their control. And they put me through hell.

Twenty-two years after the first release of this book, what has changed astronomically that allows you to prove what was then based solely on the tradition of the Dogon tribe?

Twenty years ago, I made a disturbing prediction based on tribal information that I analyzed. I suggested that astronomers would eventually confirm the existence of a third star in the Sirius star system… and that the third star would be a red dwarf. I am pleased to emphasize that, in 1995, two French astronomers, Benest and Duvent, published an article in the journal "Astronomy and Astrophysics," stating that, after completing eight years of analysis of the perturbations in the Sirius system, they could confirm the existence of a third star, a red dwarf… I would suggest reading "The Sirius Mystery" and reflecting on the real meaning of the story. Indeed, I passed the scientific test: my prediction was verified.

You has stated that the Sphinx might not be a lion at all, but a statue shaped like a dog representing the god Anubis. Why?

"I argue in this new edition that the Sphinx is not the body of a lion. It lacks obvious leonine features. The back is completely straight, similar to statues of 'Anubis' that we know. There is no mane, no large muscular chest, no tuft at the tip of the tail. So where is the lion? I look at the Sphinx and see the body of a dog, not a lion. And many seem to agree that the 'human' head of the Sphinx was obtained by re-carving an existing head, in a later period than the original construction, as it is too small compared to the body... Originally, the head must have been different. I mean to say that the statue originally was that of Anubis, crouched, facing the Sun, as the guardian of the necropolis of Giza. And it makes perfect sense, considering Anubis was the Egyptian guardian of the dead.

What is the connection with the Sirius star system?

Sirius is also known as the star of the Canis Major constellation, and the book has many pages explaining Anubis's connection with Sirius.

The Dogon, who for centuries have honored their ancestors from the Dog Star, share with ancient Sumerian, Babylonian, Jewish, Egyptian, and Chaldean traditions in identifying the current historical period as pivotal for entering a new era for humanity. Can you talk about "The Sirius Mystery" from an overall perspective?

Based on my deeper analysis of the information obtained from the Dogon, I am of the opinion that the visitors indeed came from Sirius and never returned home. This is important because I believe I know where they are. They probably entered a state of suspended animation, which they must have used for the first time during the long interstellar journey that brought them here. I think interstellar travel may be only one-way; there is no return ticket. So it would have been fitting for them to return to suspended animation, a state that the ancient Egyptians probably tried to replicate in vain through mummification. I believe that currently the visitors are still present in our solar system and are orbiting around the planet Saturn.

In this regard, I have discovered something very strange, namely that NASA is trying to conceal part of the Cassini probe's program directed towards Saturn, which is destined to study one of its moons called Phoebe. This moon strangely is the only one in the solar system that is perfectly smooth, round, and without craters, and it could actually be an interstellar vehicle, filled with dormant aquatic beings. In fact, I believe they are not dormant anymore, at least since 1981, because on that date Voyager One entered the Saturn system, which surely would have awakened them (via an automatic safety mechanism, note). The Dogon believe that these beings will return to Earth and when they do, they will rule the world from the waters. That day will be remembered as 'The Day of the Fish'."
