To make life a bit easier for me and my computer, I made a slight
modification to the votes format. From now on, when people vote for a
game that has no ID number, the tag [] or [ ] or [0000] or [9999]
is needed. Anything will do in fact, as long as it includes [ and ]
with nonsense in between. The makes it possible for my parser to skip
all the crap that people include with their votes, like "Hi Jojo",
"Here are my votes", "This is the best game ever" and "Keep up the good
work". I do like all these comments, mind you, but the parser stops at
all these lines, asking what to do with it. With 1100 voters this starts
to get on my nerves. The next few weeks everyone who forgets the [ ]
with new games, will be kindly notified. And all of you may now include
any comments or quotes with your votes, as long as they do not contain
the [ ] characters.
This week I made a small change to the algorithm that makes the Top 100.
You all know that the games in the list are not sorted by the points
received from votes alone. Last week's position has a weight too, so
that weird jumps in the list, due to the small number of voters, are
straightened out. Since a few weeks though, the Top 100 has received
votes from many more people than before. This means that in the upper
regions the list is becoming stable even if only the vote points are
used. Therefore I made a slight modification to the algorithms, which
has the following result. In the top of the list the weight of last
week's position is made less important than in the lower part of the
list. You will notice that this has resulted in a list properly ordered
by vote points only, up till #20. From then on the weight of last week
starts to have its effect again, to make the rest of the chart stable
too. This decrease of the weight of last week is linked to the total
number of voters, so that things automatically turn to the previous
situation when the number of voters drops.
Another thing I am proud to announce, is that the Net PC Games Top 100
will be joined by two sister lists on the Internet, starting next year.
A new Top 100 for console games of all formats is being introduced, and
there will also be a Top 100 of the most popular science fiction books
ever. The two authors of these lists, Bradley Lascelle and Tristom
Cooke, came to me with their ideas and I must say that I am very
pleased with these initiatives to introduce more charts on the Internet.
